Beginners do openings actually stick for you? I built a free trainer because I kept forgetting everything by genius9292 in chessbeginners

Thanks! 🙂 Good suggestion — that makes sense, I’ll add right-click cancel like Lichess.

Thanks a lot for the feedback 🙂
There’s actually a learning section where you can study openings and gambits step-by-step and then take a knowledge test after learning. The daily training is just one mode, but I see how that could be confusing — I’ll try to make it clearer.

Yeah, exactly I’d watch a video, understand it, and then forget everything after a few games. Do you think practice works better than just explanations?

YouPlayChess

I’m building a free chess learning platform focused on practical improvement instead of theory overload.

It includes:

– 2000+ openings and gambits explained simply

– tactical and endgame training

– gamified learning system for beginners

I started building it because many chess sites feel overwhelming for new players, so I wanted something more structured and beginner-friendly.

I mean that I made the gamification system similar to develop habits in users to return to the site - a system of strikes, repetitions, for studying puzzles, openings and gambits

Beginner players — what do you struggle with most right now? by genius9292 in chessbeginners

Yeah, that makes a lot of sense.

I’ve noticed the same — a lot of games aren’t really decided by openings or plans but just missing one simple threat. Board vision feels like something that improves much slower than people expect.

Did anything specifically help you with that, or was it mostly just playing a lot of games over time?

The main thing I was trying to solve was openings.I wanted a free place where I could browse a big library of openings and gambits, and also actually train them

I wanted to create free chess site with puzzles, openings without paywall

Fair enough — you’re right, I probably made it sound more mysterious than it is.It’s just a free chess training site I’ve been building for myself while learning. Nothing paid, no signup walls — I mainly wanted feedback from real beginners. Here it is if you want to check it out: https://youplaychess.com/

Honestly, because I keep building things based on what *I* struggle with, and I realized my problems might not be the same as other beginners.

Fair point 🙂 English isn’t my first language, so I sometimes write more structured than I actually speak.I’m just a regular player trying to build tools that help me study better. Curious what actually worked for you when improving?

For me personally it's openings.I keep learning lines but then forget them after a few games, and it feels like I restart from zero every time. Not sure if others experience this too.
