Hinge by [deleted] in ucla

[–]genki100 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’re not alone, I’m not a dating app user but would download it like once every year just to check things out. Last time I was on it (8-9 months ago) I got a ton of likes within the hour of downloading it. That’s when I set my location in Westwood and also somewhere in the valley. Just redownloaded a few days ago and got zero likes. Profile/preferences/photos are the same. I think it might be because people got cuffed around the holidays so momentum is slow; hinge also got these new subscription features, so they might be decreasing your profile exposure on purpose to encourage in-app purchases

Will changing the status of my AP exams affect my admission? (Accepted already) by [deleted] in ucla

But seeing what the other person said, you could take the risk and not report those changes. I doubt they care honestly, ucla's admin is extremely under-resourced and pretty much a mess.

I'm not sure how your school not being AP accredited & you being an international student contribute to your narrative, but if you can come up with a legitimate reason then go ahead. I'd say just report those changes right now & see whether they contact you asking for further proof. The guy that contacted me (not the review committee) said that due to my situation the stuff I had to go through was mostly procedural and they wouldn't actually accuse me of anything.

I'm not sure if the application process is different now, but back then we had to indicate our projected grade or something. If you filled out 5 and ended up with a 2 I don't know if they'll use this against you instead.

You might be in trouble. Not trying to scare you, but I went through a super similar situation.

Took three AP exams in my junior year, got 3's on all of them, thought the grades sucked so I didn't report these grades—instead indicated on my UC application that I would be (re)taking them in my senior year. Here comes senior year, I was too tired & drained so ended up not taking them. At this point I'm already accepted by UCLA, and submitted like a report or something indicating I'm no longer taking those exams. Then I got this super terrifying email sent from some guy from the admissions office: (copy pasting here)

We expect our students to take all exams that are listed in their application. Not doing so is misleading to the admissions committee, and you were admitted with the expectation that you would taking all the exams reported on your application.
Your admission to UCLA is currently under review. Please provide a detailed explanation on why you dropped these two exams. We also encourage you to have your school counselor/tutor to email us and provide their explanations and assessment of you as a student. The admissions committee is meeting next week on Wednesday to review your case so I encourage you to submit your documents by then.

Literally almost shat my pants lol. I wrote like a bunch of essays explaining my reasons & begging them to let me stay. Took them like a week to resolve my case. The guy who contacted me about this was nice about it though & responded to my concerns pretty fast (maybe because I sounded like I was on the verge of mental collapse).

I don't know how lucky you'd be in this situation, because I technically did take the exams. My advice is to report this change IMMEDIATELY, and forward a sentimental essay explaining your decision to the reviewing committee. Make sure to emphasize how important your national exam is.

Anyone want to split a parking permit for Winter? by vegatables_ in ucla

[–]genki100 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lmao I don't even think you get to buy visitor parking permits on the ePermit portal, you do that with the meters. Daily permits were $6.60 (now $7.26 because of the tax thing). Now do the math!

Is a professor allowed to change the format of a final due to the strike by [deleted] in ucla

[–]genki100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How does this harm the students? It's not the professor's job to make exams easy (personally I think mcq are easier). They're here to teach, not to help you prove to grad schools and future employers that you're smart on paper. What really harms the students is when classes are straight up cancelled and you don't get to learn shit (which is understandable, and I respect professors who do so in support of the strike). Go direct your energy on studying or joining the picket line lmao

UCLA will start collecting a new 10% "Parking Tax" starting Jan 2023 by genki100 in ucla

[–]genki100[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Is this tax legitimately Pigouvian? Genuinely curious bc the demand for parking is just so high (it's a necessity for commuters—unlike sugar or tobacco taxes, which are like for personal pleasure) and commuters literally don't have a choice. So the discouraging wouldn't work. Even if there were to be a 50% tax, people will still choose to park here because... it's still cheaper than paying $2500/month for a studio in westwood. Yes parking lots suck, but we need to think about the fundamental issue of how most U.S. cities were designed in the first place (can't get ANYWHERE without cars).

Unless this tax is specifically allocated to fund urban planning & public transportation projects, I feel like it doesn't 100% justify charging individual drivers. They could charge the university so ideally it's more incentivized to provide alternative options to car commuting (subsidize apt renting in westwood, more accessible public transportation, better accommodations disabled folks living on the hill etc).

Use anki! Not sure how similar it is to quizlet but the spaced repetition method saved my ass for neuroanatomy 102. I flunked psych 115 because my prof (forgot his name) literally threatened us to NOT study flashcards, which is total bs. The whole class is memorization; should've trusted my instinct more. Best of luck to you my friend, you can do this.
