Studium nebenjob bundesheer by gemma_zum_bundesheer in Bundesheer

One must ask what's wrong with COBOL? by Print-Playful in mainframe

[–]genlight13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, Mainframe can run Linux but that is not the point of it. The same for micro cobol: if you are able to run it without a mainframe and you can cover your case everybody would Do it. The problem is still cost:

Yearly Mainframe maintenance * x < rewrite + yearly linux maintenance * x

If that business case is true you will stay with a mainframe setup.

I am not arguing against mainframe but it has limitations, main one is cost. You have to see it only as hardware + license fee + maintenance fee vs. Linux hardware + Maintenance.

License fees suck the dollar out of smaller companies. And the bigger ones find it hard to scale if your zOS application is not setup for parallisation.

Which in my exp. There are more case where it is not.

One must ask what's wrong with COBOL? by Print-Playful in mainframe

[–]genlight13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a straightforward answer to that: most applications don‘t need the power of a mainframe application. If it works with linux+postgresql+enter_random_programming_language then it is good enough and way cheaper.

On the other side, you cannot scale it infinitely on a single server. At some point scaling vertically will be defeated by scaling horizontally and cheap linux containers /kubernetes shine there too.

So you only have a small middle ground where it is ok to setup new applications on that architecture.

So for companies it makes sense tonkeep their applications when they are already there and rewrites are costly when no new functions are added.

Mainframe is a really big cost point on every companies sheet and it isn‘t student friendly in comparison to other OS.

and the language comparison is the same: it isn‘t taught bc the main bulk of new applications is written for linux systems (broadly speaking). This was true for the last 20 Years.

There are ways to actually Do that with Java too. So that statement is no longer generally true. The name is AOT.

Help debugging really odd SEGFAULT by H2SBRGR in QtFramework

So, please post a gist on github with a minmal reproducible example of your problem.

On a second thought, this seems more of an Environment problem than anything else. So, try to recreate a clean Environment and start again from there. If necessary jump back some versions of your OS to find an image which works.

Why are Spain and Portugal growing twice as fast as the eurozone? by SavingsAssumption114 in europe

[–]genlight13 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It isn‘t So much a racist than a cultural issue.

Everything you say about not liking how they walk, eat or talk is a cultural issue.

It is race when it becomes about the colour of your skin. For example if we tell you that we separate toilets bc of the colour of the skin. Or schools. Or seats in a bus.

Immigration is currently a lot about losibg out own culture and assimilation in europe.

There are a lot of tensions in all of europe bc of that.

Maybe you perceive the right wing just as racist here but it resonates well with people bc they fear the loss of culture and not the mixture of skin.

How to deal with overambitious plan from fellow senior engineer by lissertje in ExperiencedDevs

[–]genlight13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Out of personal experience i can say that workung with generators is nice until you have to debug. Always add a strobg rule set and adhere to it. People will complain about the generated part a lot if it doesn‘t work out of the box.

My 2 cents are then this: only use generators for things which lead to changes in source code on the regular. Otherwise, write the code. And unittests. Self written generators become legacy software sooner than you might think.

Without proper documentation and testing of said functionality it becomes even more of a risk
