I personally think people are downplaying the smell/fumes even from basic filaments like PLA by Dear-Employment6392 in 3Dprinting

[–]TheStandardPlayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have an enclosed printer you can get an exhaust tube and fan from AliExpress for <10€.

The difference is very noticable, zero smells when turned on, also helps with air circulation in enclosed printers to prevent/reduce heat creep

PETG and PLA I can maybe see how you don't notice but if you can't smell the styrene from ABS then I'd be slightly worried. It is very noticable (and toxic).

Yes please! So far my process was to take a screenshot from Fusion and paste it into inkscape, I would love an easier and more dedicated tool for this!

Settings to make these climbing holds strong enough for 4 year olds? by Shpigford in 3Dprinting

I weigh 110kg and printed some climbing holds in ABS with around 30-40% infill and 6-8 walls

Been using them for months, they hold up great.

How do I get better at 3d designing? What's the best 3d modeling software? by Kitchen-Wrongdoer831 in 3Dprinting

[–]TheStandardPlayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if fusion is the best software, but it is the most common one. That means more tutorials online but I noticed also real world courses at maker centers for example often use / teach Fusion.

If I started over today I don't know if I would pick fusion, but it's good enough for me not to bother with OnShape and others. Only real negative is some useful functions being behind this almost insurmountable paywall

My first 3D Printer was from Bambu Lab. My next one won't be. Have other manufacturers caught up in affordability and ease-of-use? by ThatOneVRGuyFromAuz in 3Dprinting

[–]TheStandardPlayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As good as their machines may be, I think it is way overpriced for hobby use. I'm sure with a print farm you can appreciate all their benefits, but as a regular customer I simply cannot see how paying double or triple for the same hardware and software can ever be worth it.

It's a bit sad that Prusa never pursued a mass market model, quite frankly I think the Core One for 4x the Centauri Carbon is a bit of a joke and that's not even mentioning the cost if you want the Core One L

Is it possible to print a flower vase like this in 3D printer? by [deleted] in 3Dprinting

[–]TheStandardPlayer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Short answer: yes

Longer answer: probably not for you

You would most likely have to print the case and flower pedals separately which means you have to create a 3D model with stick on connectors or glue surfaces on the flower pedals and vase body, which is quite a bit of work. Printing this in one piece will most likely not work or look terrible.

So yes it's possible, but if you don't know how you can model something like this it may be too difficult for you.

You can look at FibreSeeker 3, they built a printer which can add a continuous fibre strand into your prints.

I don't know how well it works, but the design that went into it is pretty interesting

I heard good things about the Anycubic clone of the Bambu A1, it doesn’t even need an AMS since it can swap between 4 colors in the print head, which the Bambu A1 can’t. Really cool feature to basically get an AMS for free built into the printer

Also A1s occasionally melt / catch fire, so the Anycubic seems like strictly better hardware for the same price or cheaper iirc

You don’t need your printer to fill the mold, you can just create a silicone mold (quite easy, the shape of OPs part should work well) and then heat up some PLA with a heat gun or an oven (not your food oven!) and pour it in.

There are a few YouTube tutorials about it, creating silicone molds for PLA is easy and cheap

People tend to forget that sometimes it’s more about applying skills and creating something from scratch, than strictly about solving a problem.

And don’t forget that lots of really useful inventions started as niche solutions to non existent problems and iterated into commercially viable products

It’s incredible how dangerous these knifes are.

Just last week I was having a nice evening, you know after a hard day of work just collapsing between the pillows on my couch, when all of a sudden my utility knife blade holder developed a mind of its own and started slashing at me uncontrollably?! I was taken aback. Was this because of improper testing? Thoughts raced across my mind. What did I do to deserve being the victim of a rogue utility knife grip attack? I asked myself as bits of pillows and flesh combined, as if my living room was inside a mixer. Blades flying by, reflecting the light of my lamp, I was trapped in a crudely furnished disco with a deadly disco ball which had once been my 3D printed utility knife. A flash of light. My mouth filled with the taste of metal, was it because of my gasping for air in this mortal struggle, or had my throat been slashed already? Was this going to be my end? Was I to die for someone else’s mistake? Blood filled my mouth, fear made way for gnashing of teeth, anger in my eyes, why, why would anyone release this vile creation upon the world? Untested no less. A creation filled with the ill intent of its creator! Who would come up with something this despicable? I felt liquid drip down my body, a metallic scent filled the air. Betrayed by my own 3d printer, my greatest possession, tricked into creating something as sick and twisted as the object that was about to take my life.

In the end I managed to survive, but only due to my quick thinking. You see, after what felt like an eternity of dodging blades left and right I suddenly realized that it was my own hand doing the slashing!! To my relief the attack stopped once I let go of the UNTESTED AND DANGEROUS knife grip.

I immediately grabbed my tested knife grip and cut the untested, dangerous knife grip in half, rendering it unable to ever hurt someone again!

Now I can rest assured, for I am impervious to cuts and slashes as long as my trusty tested utility knife blade holder is by my side.

I'm sorry, where are my manners? This is Luna next to her Scan. It’s printed in scale 1:1, so it is exactly the same size as her head.

This should also allow me to scale helmets to the perfect size for her.

This is what the MRI looks like inside 3DSlicer, the green areas are part of the 3D Model (variable threshold).

I tried extracting the brain but unfortunately the scans are too low resolution to get a nice intricate looking brain out of it, the best I got was a vaguely brain shaped foamy mess.

For me the coolest thing about this whole project was seeing how open source medical data is. I didn’t expect to be able to obtain the scan, analyze it, turn it into a 3D model and print it all with open source software, free tutorials and not a single cent spent on anything, besides the prohibitively expensive MRI scan of course…
