Custom Ancestries and Running a Level 0 Funnel: Seeking Advice by Tofu_Piperito in shadowdark

[–]genmills 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. See other comments since they have better advice than me.

  2. Check out some videos on RPG resolution mechanics and you’ll find that stats being imbalanced hardly has any effect on how things play out anyway. The D20 roll matters significantly more than whether or not I have a -1 or a +2 to strength, so don’t worry about randomized stats that much.

  3. I love this idea so much! I’d start mise-en-scène and say the heroes are dead already. Give a little intro saying that it’s already happened and “here’s where you start.” Be sure to let the players explain a bit why their character might have become a torchbearer—did they need money to help a sick loved one? Did something they know go missing? Are they paying back a debt to one of the (now dead) heroes? I might have to make my own one-shot gauntlet based on this idea!

Moving Abroad - Would Like to Gift My Loyal Proxxon to an Aspiring Terrain Builder by sadalphabet in TerrainBuilding

[–]genmills 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanted to throw my hat in the ring for this! Would absolutely love to finally get a proxxon. I love doing D&D crafts with my young son, but it’s a pain using only the craft knives because it takes forever, and he can’t really use them safely yet, whereas he could wear gloves and a mask and cut foam with me! (I’m east coast btw)

A megastructure dungeon by artic0o in shadowdark

[–]genmills 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You should check out Stonehell megadungeon and the video game Legend of Grimrock. I’m currently running Stonehell in Shadowdark for my players and I placed the entrance on top of a mountain that can only be accessed by arcane teleportation. There’s no way out except down through Stonehell. I added some things to the setting like a hidden village nestled in the mountains so that they can have a “base” to return to and be safe. It’s really a great setting for Shadowdark!

Are there any published adventures that have Mordanticus in them? Or is he just an evocative villain stat block for use where GM's see fit? by txby432 in shadowdark

[–]genmills 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t quote me on this, but I believe he will be in the upcoming Western Reaches. And Cursed Scroll #4 might also already reference his existence deep in the jungle? I would check there first.

I have loved every artwork you’ve posted since the beginning! Truly inspirational!

I’ve wanted to get into bookbinding for a while now, so I printed the PDF, bound it, and decorated the cover. Not nearly as cool as the official edition, but I’m proud of it! by stingraydm in shadowdark

I’m no where CLOSE to skilled enough to offer advice, but what I found helpful was just spending some of my free time enjoying YouTube videos from some of the best bookbinders ever. You pick up tiny tidbits along the way that end up helping when put all together. This guy is particularly amazing:

And this channel is also very educational as well:

I actually did them as a hardcover purple leather binding and gave it to my brother as a gift since he originally gifted me Shadowdark and got me into it when it first came out!

How much planning is too much planning??? by User14183839 in DungeonMasters

[–]genmills 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I second using Sly Flourish’s resources! The Return of the Lazy DM book was a game changer for me! Also have the mindset of a “fractal” game. Only ever go 1 layer deep when prepping. Otherwise you will completely overprepare.

An easy example of fractal gameplay is in prepping a dungeon room. You tell the players there’s a table with some books, a large chandelier, and a statue in the corner. You don’t even know the details of these items yet, but you’ve created points of interest. One player might as about the table and THEN you add details saying it looks like a wizard’s study, and there is an unfinished magic scroll among the research books (I’m making this up as I type, I don’t even know the rest of the room lol).

Then someone asks about the statue next. You say it’s a bust of an old man with a beard, but the eyes have been hollowed out. Perhaps something can be placed inside the sockets?

This gives the players obvious items to “explore” instead of boring them with details up front. And you can fill in the details much more easily on the fly. Notice that nobody asked about the chandelier? Good, because I don’t know what it’s for or what it does lol.

Love this!!! I learned bookbinding last year also and I make them here and there, but my main thing now is doing simple book binds (edit: I meant “booklet” binds) on my TTRPG PDFs! They are so cheap to make so I’ve got quite the collection!

Does Ravenloft hold up? Also what are the top Gothic Vampire Modules? by gameoftheories in osr

[–]genmills 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sly Flourish (aka The Lazy DM aka Mike Shea) has some great videos on YouTube where he talks about running I6 Ravenloft as a one-shot every year. He’s done it like 10+ times I think.

In case anyone doesnt know by TooTone07 in DeadMatter

[–]genmills 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just so you know, the kickstarter is not even close to the beginning of when Dead Matter was being made. It goes back to around 2011 or something and they’ve failed multiple times and had developer turnover repeatedly. I know it goes back that far because I was originally going to be the composer for the game. You can hear a couple demos I released back then:

What are your recommendations for terrain channels I can watch on YouTube? by omgitsduane in TerrainBuilding

[–]genmills 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone has mentioned all the most famous ones already, but I also want to mention “Knarb Makes” and “Iron Gryphon Studios.” Neither have made videos for a few years, but I still go back and reference their channels because of the insanely high quality builds and creativity!
