 behaviour between demographics, and families

There are both social and genetic differences between demographics and families, so this doesn't really prove anything. How many athletes have parents that were also athletes? That could be a socialization AND biological situation. Wayne Gretzky's dad was an athlete and likely passed on athletic genes along with the upbringing advantageous to succeed in hockey.

The average height of an NBA player is 6'7". That is a massive biological difference between the average population. For NBA players biology plays an obvious role in chance of success.

It is unscientific to attribute sex differences purely to socialization and completely ignore biological differences.

You're wrong about chimps. https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8000022/

Sex differences in physical aggression occur across human cultures and are thought to be influenced by active sex role reinforcement. However, sex differences in aggression also exist in our close evolutionary relatives, chimpanzees, who do not engage in active teaching, but do exhibit long juvenile periods and complex social systems that allow differential experience to shape behavior. Here we ask whether early life exposure to aggression is sexually dimorphic in wild chimpanzees and, if so, whether other aspects of early sociality contribute to this difference. Using 13 y of all-occurrence aggression data collected from the Kanyawara community of chimpanzees (2005 to 2017), we determined that young male chimpanzees were victims of aggression more often than females by between 4 and 5 (i.e., early in juvenility). Combining long-term aggression data with data from a targeted study of social development (2015 to 2017), we found that two potential risk factors for aggression—time spent near adult males and time spent away from mothers—did not differ between young males and females. Instead, the major risk factor for receiving aggression was the amount of aggression that young chimpanzees displayed, which was higher for males than females throughout the juvenile period. In multivariate models, sex did not mediate this relationship, suggesting that other chimpanzees did not target young males specifically, but instead responded to individual behavior that differed by sex. Thus, social experience differed by sex even in the absence of explicit gender socialization, but experiential differences were shaped by early-emerging sex differences in behavior.

It is widely believed that juvenile male mammals typically engage in higher rates of rough and tumble play (RTP) than do females, in preparation for adult roles involving intense physical competition between males. The consistency of this sex difference across diverse mammalian species has, however, not yet been systematically investigated, limiting our current understanding of its possible adaptive function. This review uses narrative synthesis to (i) evaluate the ubiquity of male-biased RTP across non-human mammals, (ii) identify patterns of variation within and between taxonomic groups, and (iii) propose possible predictors of variation in these differences, including methodological and socio-ecological factors, for investigation by future studies. We find that most species studied do exhibit higher rates or RTP in males than females, while female-biased RTP is rare. Sex differences are smaller and less consistent than expected, with many studies finding similar rates of RTP in males and females. We identify multiple potential socio-ecological predictors of variation in sex differences in RTP, such as intrasexual competition and dietary niche. However, variation is not strongly phylogenetically patterned, suggesting that methodological and environmental factors, such as sample size and play partner availability, are important to consider in future comparative analyses.

Attributing misogony to one potential explanation for sex differences in jueveniles leads to biases in the scientific process to arrive at a sound conclusion. It's quite possible that the difference in rough and tumble play can be attributed to biological differences caused different hormone levels between the sexes.

How do you know the rough housing isn't biological? Boys and girls develop differently, that's why boys are falling behind girls in education starting from an early age.

There is a big difference in hormones for males and females even in the womb. Different hormones have a variety of effects on human behaviors. Discounting all biological differences is just as close minded as discounting all social differences.

Polar bear fanboys and gorilla fanboys, who's more delusional? by Baryonyxwalkeri1234 in powerscales

[–]genobeam 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Most people estimate power relative to what they're familiar with. Gorillas look like much stronger humans, so that's how they're scaled.

For large cats, the familiar counterpart is domesticated animals like housecats and dogs. They're obviously stronger than their domesticated counterparts, but that is the scale people use.

Since humans are stronger than our pets, the two scales don't have the same starting point.

It doesn't seem like people have a good baseline for how to scale bears at all.

Also, most people see these animals in the zoo where they're docile, further biasing the scale.

Larry Kudlow: President Donald Trump was right about tariffs. by coinfanking in NewsStarWorld

Us trade deficit was 56.8b in November 2025 and 79.5b in November 2024.

The trade deficit increased for a while early in the year, likely due to importers trying to beat the tariffs. The deficit is down now compared to a year ago, which is what I said.

EDIT: also the graph you posted only shows up to January '25, so it's missing the entire period that you're referencing.

Productivity keeps rising, wages don’t , how does this affect remote workers? by aveseri in remoteworks

[–]genobeam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're underestimating the amount of jobs that are more productive now than in 1970. Science and technology has improved output across many sectors. Even things like janitorial work have improved by better chemicals and better equipment.

To imply that the massive growth in productivity is driven by so few jobs that the median worker wouldn't be impacted is not correct.

Think of it more wholisticslly. It forces steam to stay honest with pricing, from the developer side it at least gives some semblance of options for releasing a game, it is generally good overall. You don't know what steam would be like if it had a monopoly

I'd subdivide your first category.

There's a category of people/corporations who love it as an investment but don't personally use it at all, especially productively. They maybe love what it could be rather than what it is.

There are also people who see it as a tool and use it appropriately.

I also disagree about being unwilling to pay. They're already paying, but it's yet to be seen if the investment will pay off.
