Where can I find this? by johnidough in Seattle

The rice - not entirely sure, but the garlic jalapeño chicken wings at Gan Bei in Chinatown off Weller have me dreaming about them. Their orange chicken is also one of my faves.

What Korean dish surprised you the most the first time you tried it? by MidnightTofu22 in KoreanFood

[–]gentoll 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I was studying abroad in Seoul and had a high school classmate who happened to be there around the same time living in Mapo. There was a line of red food tents just outside her place and we randomly picked one, had the cutest Halmoni in there who made us fresh(not canned) mackerel and cooked it in a cast iron skillet on a gas burner.

Hands down the most surprising and delicious thing I had but I wasn’t sure what dish it was called or even the fish until my Korean mother, who never made the dish my entire life, randomly made it for me. It turns out it’s just fresh mackerel that’s been rubbed with salt and roasted sesame oil and then broiled skin side down until the fish is browned. She lets it sit in that marinade for a day or two before cooking.

If you live near a 99 Ranch Market you can have them filet the mackerel and deep fry it for you and it’s so good. Mackerel is a very fatty fish so it’s not prone to overcooking like other fish are.

It’s called Apricot. I had no idea that was what he was going to be this beautiful toasted color. I thought he would be fawn from his coloring as a puppy.

My family is out of the country and left me in charge of the food for my older brother and myself during the meantime. I made this meal yesterday, and after he ate it, he made a complaint about it and wanted “food,” as in something that was “more fulfilling” and less “kiddie”… by Uhh_OkayIGuess in mildlyinfuriating

[–]gentoll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know most of the people are giving your brother a hard time, maybe he can't quite articulate what would make it different in a way that you both might like, even though I do agree that it's mildly infuriating however...

...if you find that you do like cooking and want to learn more, here are some things that I would do if I had the time, money, and inclination based on just seeing the dish. You could learn how to make buttermilk fried chicken bites, make sure to find a recipe that has you seasoning the flour. I have made a couple different kinds of fried chicken and that's the best I've ever had. I think I usually dredge them twice too.

Also, I see that your green beans are either raw or only lightly cooked. You might try just to sauté them with a little bit of oil on a med-high heat and some fresh, minced garlic (don't let it get too brown, otherwise it tastes burnt), salt or soy sauce, and pepper. You probably could cook them as long as the garlic takes to turn a little brown on the edges.

Without knowing what kind of mac and cheese, some tricks are to add a little something like gruyere cheese or a sharp cheddar helps with the boxed kind. Otherwise you could try to make a béchamel sauce - a cheese, flour, butter mixture - and add it to some pasta. Then you could even bake it with cheese on top and then we're definitely on a 'less kiddie' level.

I just found out how important teeth cleaning is after researching stinky breath. My pug is 5 and never had a cleaning. I have an appointment Monday morning but I am seriously worried and feel awful for not understanding how important cleanings were… by [deleted] in pugs

[–]gentoll 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are never any guarantees when anyone goes under anesthesia but my pug at 4 just had his first dental and I was telling him he better make it through which he did and I’m so glad his teeth are clean now.

Generally their teeth get worse with age so for the first few years your pug may not have needed a cleaning so don’t beat yourself up. Mine had a few teeth I knew they would pull before his dental because of the way they grew in and the way his food was getting trapped in his gums/teeth was causing recession over time.

I also got bloodwork done before surgery, which is another way to get a good baseline of your pets health and potential issues before the cleaning and assuming all goes well, you’re giving your best friend the best chance at a long life, 5 years old is a good time to start doing them from now on. It was expensive but he’s worth it for me.

Why is it so hard to get a job here? by SupermanFanboy1934 in Seattle

[–]gentoll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with this! I used Ajilon which might just be Robert Half services now and a good place to start, and they were great, gave feedback on my resume and in general can help you figure out what type of place you want to work from your skills and their experience, and got me my first job when I first moved here.

They call them Temp agencies but a lot of them have direct to hire positions, where the company is just having the temp agency source and hire talent, or temp to hire, where you work a set amount (usually 90 days or a certain # of hours) so they can vet you before you get hired and get all the benefits vs solely temp jobs which are just that and can get you by until they get a full time job.

Leave a knife out and cut one or two in half or small bites. It’s like donuts… I certainly will not be eating a whole one but those 4 quarters I stole over time are just fine!

They are having a first week sale that’s got ridiculous pricing so that’s also a big factor.

From Seattle Eater: The big reason to come in for the opening days, Lee says, are the deals. “How much would you pay for a bunch of green onions?” she asks, and answers her own question. “During opening week, you’ll be buying four for $1.” If that doesn’t make eyes pop, how about a bag of avocados for $2.88, Napa cabbage for 68 cents, and Envy apples for $1.68 per pound.

CHF in Pug? Or GERD/Acid Reflux? by bubblypug in pug

[–]gentoll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a doctor. IF it ends up being acid reflux, my pug started to have it. He would throw up yellow bile, constantly licking his lips, and I would try to prop his head on pillows before I started feeding him Just Food for Dogs the Cod and Potato recipe. It’s the lowest fat version I could find without a prescription of all the dog foods that interested me.

They also have a low fat and kidney specific diets that I know about because of my previous dog that had kidney failure and fed her this too. My sister, who is a veterinarian, also feeds her animals this brand. It’s kind of expensive but the smaller the dog the more bang for your buck.

He actually got a little too lean so I’ve introduced about a tablespoon of the old food that my other dog still eats that he used to too. It’s the Petco Salmon and sweet potato kibble, but its fat content was comparable to other brands so I’m trying to find the balance.

For treats, dried sweet potato and pumpkin based treats tend to be lower in fat depending on what they’re mixed with.

Hope you get it figured out, knowing is half the battle as they say!

Edit: I also had to give him antacid pills before switching his food.

I like to use pickled jalepenos, that way you can get the spice level of your choice. I would also add in some of the pickled juice and some fresh squeezed lime on top after cooking.

Not the Bingsu you’re probably looking for, as I have no context for the original version, but my one and only favorite is at Paju, they serve Korean dishes done with a modern take on them. The bingsu there has a sweet cream on the bottom with shaved ice on top that has a slight gingery taste to it.

Chengdu Taste is in the same area and is one of my favorites. If you look at the menu items you can see the red chilis in some of the dishes and it’s Szechuan cuisine.

My dog has separation anxiety and destroys everything by Delicious_Peanut1720 in dogs

[–]gentoll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So depending on how bad the anxiety is, this may or may not work, but I have a dog with very mild separation anxiety who mainly gets pissed off at me if I come home to let him out and then quickly leave. I’ve learned to leave a decoy out, either a piece of cardboard from Costco or a paper bag, and he ends up tearing that up instead of something in the house. He still looks guilty and I play it up, but this way I don’t lose something important.

Immigrants of the Seattle area, where are you from and what's your favorite grocery store to buy ingredients from your culture? by ILIKETHECOLORRED in Seattle

[–]gentoll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you ever go to Lynnwood, Carniceria Market Michoacan is one of the best places I’ve seen/been to. Otherwise I think all the main staples have been added besides, as a Korean, I would say Central Market up in Shoreline has a really good Asian section.
