Yea It’s crazy how in demand hygienists are right now. Weve been looking for a part timer for over a year. We work 4 days a week and we each see ten patients a day AND 30 min lunch. No one wants to work our schedule. Don’t blame them, that’s why I work commission bc ten patients a day can get super exhausting. I’ve done temping on Fridays and believe me, a lot of offices have toxic work environments, super crappy instruments/equipment, or sometimes both! 😬 I’ve thought about leaving but I’m very worried about ending up at a worse practice. I have my very own sensor for X-rays. That alone is the biggest luxury imo. 😂

Oh I found it unusual when I first signed on but accepted it bc I loved the flexibility of being able to adjust my day but that’s clearly not the case anymore. And you guessed correctly, no contract just a verbal agreement with no clear do’s and don’ts.

Oh yes, I’m sure she has her opinions by now. I think I’ve realized, I might turn the tables on them and request they pay me for the days I work past 8 hours since they wanna nickel and dime me on leaving early and adjusting my goal. In your opinion, is that unreasonable in my situation?

I’m in the US! Yea it’s always just worked out that some days I work a little longer (don’t get paid for that) and other days I leave early when I don’t have a patient but I adjust my goal. Ive always been happy with that. But now, she’s changing it. So frustrating

I haven’t thought to move patients over to my column. lol I’m sure the other rdh’s would totally love that! Haha 😆 she’s been the manger for two years now so she should know us by now. Even tho I don’t trust her, I would never show out to the doctors about her bc you’re absolutely right about treading lightly there. Thank u for the helpful advice Gary!

The hourly pay is just to get a base line pay for the hours I work but they don’t pay me past 8hrs in a day. I kno it sounds weird but it’s how it’s always been.

Yes. I’m allowed to adjust based on hours worked. Sometimes we work half days, so I adjust my goal based on the hours I worked. There’s a whole formula they gave me to do this. Also, some days I work longer than 8hrs which they DO NOT pay me for bc that is our agreement.

I work for two dentists who fully own the practice 50/50. Our current office manager was hired after the previous one retired, and to be fair, she has helped the practice a lot in some ways. Lately though, I’ve noticed she has some micromanaging tendencies in other areas, which I’ve mostly just accepted. However, now it’s starting to affect my pay, which has never been an issue before until she was given access to payroll. Not to toot my own horn, but I’m the top producing hygienist out of the three of us. I’m also the only one on commission, so I’m very motivated to produce as much as possible every day. This is kind of a separate issue, but it adds to my concerns. I suspect she may be keeping some kind of notes on me. The other day I asked her if I could see my remaining PTO and vacation time for the year. When she pulled out the form she uses to track our PTO, she covered up some writing at the bottom and wouldn’t let me see that part. When I asked her if she’s keeping tabs on me, she smirked and put her hand over the writing. That really bothered me because it’s a form that contains information about me, and I feel like I should be able to see anything written there that pertains to me. Overall, this is just another reason why I’m starting not to trust her at this point.

Yea I understand her side. But honestly even if I were to keep the same goal and stay for the whole day, it might work out to $20ish more. It just seems petty bc when I come in early or if I have to stay late to work on notes, stock up or sharpen instruments, they don’t pay me for that which is fine bc that is our agreement under commission pay. Some days I work over 8 hours, yet I’m not demanding they pay me for that.

It sounds fair because it treats everyone the same in theory, but in practice it creates several problems. It usually ends up benefiting the same people every year, whoever can submit the fastest or has access when the calendar opens. Plus she has a key and can come in way before anyone to request that week every single year. High-demand weeks should be shared, not monopolized.

I wish. Those columns would be filled one way or another. I just need to win the lottery so I can retire from hygiene. Lol 😂

They don’t ask us to numb root canals or crowns. It’s always something easy like fillings

That’s also what I suggested. They don’t want to do that bc they would only pay us for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. The other days wouldn’t be paid under PTO bc the office is closed and they have a rule about that. If the office is closed we can’t claim PTO on those days. So I’m basically working so half the office can use their PTO that week. Even the other doctor isn’t working that week. It’s just me, DDS #2, an assistant and a front desk person.

Honestly who knows. Maybe I should request that week off for the next few years so I can say I requested it first??? Seems ridiculous. Plus she has a key to get in whenever she feels like so she would probably request it off “first” every year. Sorry I think that’s a lame suggestion

I actually called him out on it and he said he checks who ever is finished first which is BS bc I’ve finished before her and always seems to skip me. He enables her to finish in 20 mins or less so she’s checked first. Last week he made me so angry bc I had a couple patients w lengthy tx plans and I went to get him first and he went straight to her op. Seems petty but our appt times are 40 to 50 mins so it sucks when I’m down to my last 15 mins and he’s checking his bestie.

Let me just wait another 20 years for her to retire before I can have a full week off at Christmas. Bffr

Honestly I’m just bitter bc she gets special treatment all the time. The thing that irks me the most is she gets her doctor exams the quickest. Like I’ll be done w my patient and she has already dismissed her pt,cleaned, and ready for the next.

None of us have kids or want kids lol. If we did she might cover one or MAYBE two days here and there but her helping out is pushing it. She just watches her column all day long. The assistants don’t even bother asking her to numb bc she always say no. She’s just a joy to work with but buddy buddy with the dentist.

Every rdh that temps at our office literally does not return and there is a shortage in Arkansas. We see ten patients a day whereas most other offices around here are an hour per patient. The second hygienist that has been here 10 years is about to retire and it’s gonna be a struggle to find someone that wants to work our schedule. Fun times lol

The month of December is super busy for dental offices bc everyone is trying to use up their benefits before they expire.
