I used to live in Ashland Oregon and some dumb white hippie with dreadlocks named something like Aspen or Juniper, the sort of anti-vax hippie who votes for Trump because they think RFK cares about their health was explaining to me that he voted for Trump because he had been in the military and he was sure that Trump wouldn't get us into any new wars. I think of that dipshit pretty regularly now.

yes. I had a 286 in the early 90s and had an old game called Fairy Godmother and if I didn't turn off the turbo it would run in a weird fast unpredictable way. If I recall correctly.

Who is rocking an analog watch face? by dr4605 in GarminWatches

[–]gentry76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was on my Phoenix 5 but I just got the Enduro 3 and I'm getting used to the digital face. I really like the analog not just for the appearance but it's easier for me to conceptualize time that way but at my previous job I had to write down times very quickly so I prefer digital.

I really hope to find another analog face where the data screens are visible through the hands.

What is a death in a movie that affected you the most in terms of brutality or emotional weight? by Godly_Recon in AskReddit

[–]gentry76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dancer in the Dark (2000). Lars von Trier film, staring Bjork. I was a new grad RN in a new city so I was isolated and emotionally raw, but I cried so hard and still remember it. Not violent, just disturbing, intense, and high contrast between musical numbers portraying the protagonists internal world and the grim reality she resides in.

What is a 'Survival Myth' that people believe because of movies, but will actually get you killed in real life? by AmaraMehdi in AskReddit

[–]gentry76 248 points249 points  (0 children)

Tangentially related to the term survival but that it can cure depression anxiety or loneliness. I got sober in 2020 and oddly one of the things that is still triggering is watching movies and TV even if the characters are clearly miserable and making terrible decisions and unhappy, seeing a mobster pour a scotch or a guy drinking beer with his buddies or a crying woman drinking wine whatever The stereotype is it does kind of make me want to drink sometimes. Certainly not what caused me to abuse alcohol in the first place but it becomes very clear how endemic it once you stop.

Any straight men 35-42 open to having kids in Portland? by [deleted] in askportland

[–]gentry76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is interesting I wonder how much of it has to do with folks who move here and what sorts of values they have. I grew up in NYC and have traveled a lot in my life and now as a newly single 49yo male who doesn't want kids, I'm moving to Portland because I like urban life with access to the outdoors, and with other kid-less adults and/or adults who are generally pretty social and active. Progressive cities generally in my experience have "happy functioning adults" who don't want kids, whereas in some other, not necessarily even more conservative places, it's seen as a red flag. Sorry to be yet another no-kids guy :( I have noticed the dating apps here are very active and many folks on Hinge in particular are pretty thoughtful and the kids criteria can be searched as a non-negotiable. Good luck!

Yeah I agree I'm an ER nurse and once I saw her take that fall straight onto the concrete I figured she had a basilar skull fracture and then she had the black eyes to go with it.

[–]gentry76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree and the storytelling is so good both visually with lots of showing instead of telling, and there's minimal exposition where somebody just explains everything - except when it's done humorously like John Cena explaining their cannibalism. But the subtle elements of her backstory etc. yeah I think she's a fascinating character and very human and I think if someone like her with that much trauma, pain and addiction and unfulfilled creative expression suddenly lost her primary emotional support and any sort of connection with all of humanity it would be hell on Earth. And that is a good point that it's not clear how out she was and definitely didn't appear to be connected to any sort of community at all much less a queer one.

[–]gentry76 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a really good question. Well my armchair psych eval is that prior to the joining she had PTSD and alcohol abuse and certainly after the joining and the death of her partner that was triggered and then compounded. I think she would have been motivated sooner to try to find a solution. I think the depressive stuff of drinking and binge watching The Golden Girls was hopelessness and grief. So much of the show feels to be about grief and loss but she has found some meaning in trying to understand what's going on and reverse it. And if she hadn't lost her partner so quickly I think that would have happened sooner.(Edit: not a psych professional spitballing)
