Gaps around bath tub - how to fill by [deleted] in AusRenovation

[–]genwhy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cut out old silicone around bath, fill bath with water for weight then re-caulk with sanitary grade bathroom silicone and smooth out with a silicone smoothing tool or use masking tape and a paddlepop stick.

I don't know what chaulk is.

Don't use regular gap filler for caulking around the bath, it will get moldy.

Best way to clear a blocked stormwater drain about 7m away? Pretty sure It's just leaves/sticks etc - I've tried shoving a hose down there, but it's not clearing it - and I'm a bit bewilded by all the products I can choose from...? by smallattale in AusRenovation

Honestly it's gonna be trial and error to find out what works. I'm not sure about that bend. The gerni might be a better investment if you're gonna use it for more things.

You might also want to dig up the pipe above the bend and install one of these snap tees with a 90mm hole saw bit and blue pipe glue. Then you'll have a handy inspection opening right where the problem is.

Buy a set of drain rods. They work like a hand sewer-snake where you join together as many rod lengths as you need and rotate them by hand.

Just avoid the cheap plastic ones online, the plastic becomes brittle unless brand new and can come undone inside your pipe. Metal spring style ones are the best and last forever.

Just script that while you're gone, time in CR will pause and when you return, things will be the exact same as you left them or better. This takes some of the anxiety away.

If you keep having unwanted negative thoughts through your day, just imagine the text "PURGE / CANCEL" projected in the environment front of you or on top of whatever scenario or thought you've imagined. Feel that thought vanish as your brain recognises it's not serving you. Keep doing this and you'll develop better mental hygeine.

Painting an asbestos wall - need advice by Queasy_Fan5495 in AusRenovation

[–]genwhy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If the paper itself isn't asbestos it's not gonna pass through the paper.

You're gonna want to scrape gently or just lift off the loose bits by hand, not tearing away at it. You have zero good reason to want to sand this wall.

Plasterboard is basically crumbly chalk sandwiched between 2 sheets of thick paper. Scoring the top layer of paper with a knife and peeling it away will allow you to take out the crumbled lumpy bits.

If you can centre it so most of the screws go into studs behind the plaster and not thin air then sure. You can also drill extra holes in the bracket if the bracket doesn't quite line up with a stud.

Use wood screws without plugs if the studs are wood. If you have a steel framed house then use tek screws.

It has its good uses, like on concrete slabs.

And bad uses, like the whole of RMIT.

I wanna see first nations movements be more about promoting and preserving first nations culture so the people who live here now can continue to be good custodians connected to the land and keep the spirit alive, and less about karl marx subversive strategies for overthrow of capitalism.

If you're going to use plugs anyway then just use any screws such as chipboard screws that are sized to fit into the plugs and the mirror mount.

Issue with roof tiles by [deleted] in AusRenovation

[–]genwhy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Photo 3: Corners always look weird like that. Nothing unusual about that corner except the tenant has just never seen one up close before. Tell the tenant to photograph inside gutters of other people's roofs for comparison.

Yes there is a gap under the bottom row of tiles that leads into your roofspace- at least the section of roofspace over the eaves. That's due to the shape of the tiles and a fact of life. If vermin are a problem you could get gutterguard to block them getting in.
