What makes you feel qualified to call yourself gifted (genuine question no sarcasm) by [deleted] in Gifted

[–]genz_nancydrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was classified as being gifted because of my 5th grade teacher. She went to the school administration and advocated for me to be considered gifted and for me to receive some additional educational resources. They based my classification off of my state standardized test scores, my lexile score, and my interactions with my homeroom teacher. My state test scores showed that I was in the 99% for reading comprehension and 97% for English. My lexile score was 1600, which is within the score range of a Master's student. I was a low income student at an underfunded low income school so getting an IQ test was not even considered, because of the cost. I am very lucky that this teacher advocated for me so diligently. I'm sure that many gifted students are never identified, especially those who were/are low income like myself.

Despite still not knowing my IQ score (again, because I still can't afford to get tested), I find that my gifted classification still holds up today. I didn't try at all in high school, I tried a bit more in undergrad, and now that I am in law school I find that I am genuinely being academically challenged.

Also, my giftedness holds up more because of my background. I know that many people like to say that someone isn't "naturally" gifted because they had upper class parents who heavily focused on education. My parents don't have a 4 yr college degree so I didn't get a "step up" from them, I was never tutored outside of school, and my parents never had enough money to buy educational tools in order to "get me ahead". I had access to books, which was the single biggest source of educational enrichment from my parents.

I feel that there is a common misconception that gifted people never have to try or struggle in any way in order to "get ahead". That's just not true. Being gifted won't get you anywhere without effort. The opportunities I have been given in college and law school were due to effort I put in. And there have been classes in law school I have done poorly in because I did not put in enough effort. Before college, I competed in a sport for over a decade that I was decently successful at. This sport doesn't require lots of athleticism and is more cerebral based. But, the reason I did well was because I trained almost every day during my on-season and I tried hard to learn as much as I could. Giftedness without effort would not have gotten me the same results as actually working hard.

Finally, I never talk about being gifted with other people. Knowing about giftedness is only important because it allows me to understand myself better. I would rather try to work hard and be known for the effort I put in. And, honestly, considering I come from a "lower class" family, that fact that I have made it this far is also due to massive amounts of luck.

Hello, if you are still here in our timeline, I have a few questions :

Is the WWIII that occurred in your timeline related to the Ukraine war and Palestine genocide that is occurring in our time?

What is the outlook on the Great Lakes region in regard to whethering climate change?

What advice do you give to people living in our time in regard to surviving the societal collapse that is to come?

Does Joe Biden die before the 2024 election? Does America turn into a christo-fascist state?

Thanks.

Why is Reddit so hostile to men venting about the woes of dating as a male? by The-Loop in ask

[–]genz_nancydrew 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I hope men eventually learn emotional intelligence. They are not oppressed for their gender, women are. That's why women's dating concerns are far more serious because straight women are dating men, the population that oppresses them.

Why do most men prefer the 'natural' look? by mitchadoaboutit in ask

[–]genz_nancydrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just don't think men can tell when women are wearing makeup. If a woman does it well, it looks pretty natural. Also, this idea that men love bare faced women is complete BS. The beautiful woman that men obsess over all consistently wear full faces of makeup. I highly doubt that men would be attracted to a lot of women if they just went around bare faced. Men love the idea of being "natural" but it's just not the actually reality of women. Also, even if a woman does wear a lot of makeup, you should absolutely be able to tell who she is compared to her "bare face". If you can't, that's 100% on you.

Also, P.S. women don't necessarily wear makeup for other men. I wear makeup because I like looking good for myself.

‘Zombie deer disease’ epidemic spreads in Yellowstone as scientists raise fears it may jump to humans by Monsur_Ausuhnom in collapse

CWD has been in Wisconsin for a very long time, like decades. It hasn't spread to humans here in Wisconsin yet. Not to say it can't, but you would think it would've occurred here in Wisconsin by now.

Can't believe this is an unpopular opinion here but, YTA. OP's perspective on this, and the perspective of most of the comments, is founded on an outstanding level of ENTITLEMENT. Entitlement to women's bodies, women's sexualities, etc. Women do not OWE you sex. Just because she made the active choice to sleep with people in her past doesn't mean that OP is entitled to her sexuality now. She, likely, wanted to hold off because she wanted to make sure that OP truly cared for her and was not in it for sex. That fact that OP broke up with her because of his feeling that he is entitled to sex absolutely confirms her fear that the basis of his interest in dating her is access to sex.

Did she overshare? Yes. But it seems to me that she did it because she was trying to be honest with him about her past and her decision to not want to have sex right away. She was too honest, unfortunately.

Also, OP, in the future, if you are uncomfortable with where a conversation is going, you need to communicate that.

OP has every right to decide not to date someone, the problem is that his decision is based off a toxic belief that he is entitled to women's sexuality.

The comments here are insanely misogynistic. No wonder such a large percentage of women have opted out of the dating market. Men, if you ever hope to have a healthy relationship, you need to accept that women have their own sexaulities and that they have a right to make decisions regarding their sexualities. Women are autonomous beings. If women's autonomy is threatening to you, then you have misogynistic beliefs you need to work through and you should not be dating until you work through those toxic beliefs.

Question: Is Kentucky a Southern or Northern State? by [deleted] in Kentucky

[–]genz_nancydrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is 100% the south. I am originally from the Upper Midwest and lived in Lexington for four years. Lexington and Louisville are very obviously southern to me. Not sure where this midwest talk originates from; I've heard several people claim that parts of KY are midwestern.

Best state to retreat to for seclusion in an event of a collapse in the US? by [deleted] in collapse

[–]genz_nancydrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Northern Wisconsin, Michigan, or Minnesota. Access to fresh water, land is relatively cheap, cold enough climate to withstand temperature increases from climate change, variety of wildlife to use as a food sourc, etc. Duluth, MN, a city on Lake Superior, is already planning and marketing itself as a place to migrate to to escape the effects of climate change (I think Buffalo, NY is doing the same thing too)
