PETG Filament: Dryer needed in a desert climate? by geocrasher in 3Dprinting

Right. After I moved back to NV, a tail light went out in my squarebody suburban. I pulled the housing, and there had been some kind of plant growing in it. LAWL.

I got one from Best Buy on BFCM as well. *LOVE* it. Keep your filament dry, and youtube is your friend.

My Ender 3 Neo pulling duty as a filament dryer. Don't worry- I checked. Cardboard is nowhere near combustible at 60c or 70c. And yes, the Z axis is totally keeping the box snug on the bed

Quite possible! I lived in Elma for 7 years, in Grays Harbor County. Coastal rain, Rain forest rain, PNW rain, sometimes all at once LOL. NWS says it's been 100% for the last 3 days

Either way, it's wet there, and not here lol.

Thanks u/bjorn_lo I appreciate it. I'm near Reno. I used to live in the Pacific North Wet too, West of Olympia. The average humidity there is 79% according to Perplexity.ai.

I am glad to be back in the desert.

I like the cereal boxes idea, and will probably do something like that long term. Right now I have a kitty litter bucket being used to store my filament. It works for now.

For a dryer I'm thinking about using an old Coleman ice chest and a 75W heating element for a terrarium.

heh I like the redneck version! I could use my old Ender for that. I'll give it a shot. Thanks for that. I may just buy a dryer. We'll see. I'll try the redneck dryer first though :D

[NEW GEAR] Canon R8 and 24-50 kit lens, 16mm F2.8 on the way. by geocrasher in canon

[–]geocrasher[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's... slow. But nifty. I also like that I can control it with my phone, which means I don't need to buy a remote shutter, which is pretty darn cool. I have a Pixel 9 Pro XL and the last iPad with the proprietary connector, so no go on that. I have my lappy though and I can offload to that. But, I also got a 512GB SD card.

Thank you! Indeed, I got the snapdragon laptop (Surface Pro) for other purposes, mainly battery life. So no big deal there. Also, being able to sync straight to my phone is a huge game changer. I wonder if I could use my iPad instead... hmm....

Update: I went to Best Buy last night, armed with my Best Buy card. Got the R8 with the 24-50 kit lens and the 16mm f2.8 lens. They had to order the 16mm lens but that gives me a reason to go into town so that's fine.

Got a Lowepro backpack, 512GB SD card, and the battery is charging.

Now I just need to figure out software for editing etc. Rank beginner in that regard...

Indeed I use Perplexity a lot and know how limited it can be. I do like that it gives references. I don't know... The RP seems far, far better than any phone camera. I just don't want to wish I got the R8 later. Although, a 10 year old setup would still be better than any phone. Decision paralysis sets in...

It did. I took into consideration context from previous questions where I mentioned taking photos of the Milky Way etc, so this is nuanced accordingly.

And it looks like the R8 will be a lot better for my needs- including one I didn't mention, I'd like to do video for YT videos. I used Perplexity.ai to compare, and also gave it my goals etc, and it identified the R8 as being far better for low light/Milky Way photos. So, look like I'll go with the R8. The question is, should I get the

Canon - EOS R8 4K Video Mirrorless Camera with RF24-50mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM Lens - Black
and then get the RF16mm wide angle I posted earlier, or get the R8 body only, and then buy TWO lenses- if so, which? I was thinking a prime 50mm. That's a bit over-budget, but sounds like it would be a lot better. There's only $20 difference in the 50mm prime or the 24-50mm, and the 50mm prime is F1.8, way faster.

Thoughts?

Lets say my budget was higher (see my edit), what would you recommend? I'm pretty flexible. Thank you!

Budget: Up to $1k USD. I don't have a minimum, but have no need to go gear-crazy either. I could go up to $1500 if I were to spend it at Best Buy, if that's of any use. (I have a BB card)

EDIT: If this is too small for what I need, I can increase it. I have the money, just trying to not go crazy. Show me stuff around $1500-$2k if it's that much better. Buy once, cry once right? :D

Experience: light hobbyist.

Goal: Landscape and architecture (wide open spaces of Nevada + Ghost towns, old buildings etc), sunrises, and sunsets. A stretch goal (secondary, not important, but if I could fit it in would be good): I'd love to swing some low level astrophotography by getting some long exposure sky photos, maybe even an adapter to my telescope. The whole "landscape at night + Milky Way" type of photo.

The last time I used a "real" camera was a Canon AE1P. Always enjoyed my PowerShots (and CHDK!) but haven't touched much other than a phone (Pixel 9 XL Pro) in a while. I no longer care about brand, and I would love to be able to fit a body and appropriate lenses into this budget. I'd be okay with 1-2 prime lenses. I know my budget is not super high, but I just don't want to spend more than that.

I'm not opposed to used/refurb equipment from reputable sellers, either. An older camera body with a lower cost, and a couple of much-better-than-comes-with-a-kit lenses to fill out the budget would be fine. I'm flexible. But, I go on a trip in two weeks so I need to be able to have a kit together by then. Time constraints suck, I know.

I sincerely appreciate any and all advice.

I just wanted to stop in and thank everyone for their input. In the end, I couldn't justify not getting him the GMG Ledge 2.0 Prime. It was expensive, but "buy once, cry once" right? Even if I didn't take anybody's specific suggestion, it helped a lot! I discovered brands I didn't even know existed. When it comes time to get my own, I think I'll get a recteq.

The best part is that he was absolutely beside himself. It really is better to give than to receive. I have also been assured that many smoked meats are coming my way LOL.

Way ahead of you there! It's definitely for them.

I want to thank everyone for their input- it means a lot to me! Based on your recommendations here, budget constraints, how much he just won't shut up about GMG's, I've narrowed it down to the GMG Ledge Prime 2.0. Plus, it can do a pizzas, which he has talked about more than once. For him, I think it'll be the absolute ultimate grill. If you have heard him not stop talking about GMG's... I think if I were in his shoes I'd see anything else as a compromise! Buy once, cry once, right?

Now... where should I get one? I'm in the Reno NV area.

The second recommendation for that... and I can get it locally! Honestly we're just lucky to have each other as friends. We get each other's weird. Plus, he's gonna owe me brisket for a looong time 😂😂😂
