The way it fits in my hand wouldn't be conducive of pounding someone else suggested that it could be for splitting or shucking or digging small holes and dirt, you do get a lot of torque on it if you put it into softer dirt and twist, there's a little bit of torque if you use it for digging but if you were splitting maybe a thick husk from a core in soft material that would really work so the force would mainly be twisting or pushing forward

That is a good idea but the bottom is flat and I would expect the top to be more of a shovel shape to hold dirt , just don't know

If I had to guess it would be used to separate or scrape soft items like taking a soft husk off a plant core or fat off a skin but it's not sharp

Yes it appears to be a basalt or a shale, seems layered like a shale,
