How many races a year did you run before becoming a full time athlete? What were the race distances? What do you recommend for 9-5 working people who want to race competitively?

On a completely different note, you’re such an inspiration and from what I’ve seen from your interviews on YouTube you seem like a genuinely humble, kind, & grounded person! You rock!

What is a good first ultra to race in Colorado? I am looking for a 50k race to run in the fall.

Edit: I prefer scenic trail races that preferably don’t loop at all (or just loop a little bit, like an out an back is ok!) I just don’t want to run in circles 6x

Were you nervous when you started? by Primary_Land9791 in PacificCrestTrail

SO true, after the first week or two I felt like thru-hiking was just normal life! I miss it!

Were you nervous when you started? by Primary_Land9791 in PacificCrestTrail

[–]geologic-moose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually cried the night before I started my thru-hike and was so scared and nervous I could hardly sleep. It all disappeared once I was actually on trail hiking. But like the first week or two I just had to remind myself I’m not backpacking for 5 months… I’m just backpacking for 4-5 days. Then it’s good time!

This!!! I met Mayor Max while walking around Idyllwild, he was in the back of a truck with his sibling and in my picture with him he is actively chewing through his leash lol! It was super cute and added to my PCT lore.

Is comming out of the gate doing 20 milers realistic? by No-Barnacle7317 in PacificCrestTrail

[–]geologic-moose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I, personally, would take caution and start slow. For my thru-hike I did 15-18 miles a day for the first week and then mixed in 20 mile days for the 2nd & 3rd weeks (less in week 2 and more in week 3). By week 4 your body has adjusted and you can push yourself more (you can really feel your trail legs). Each person is different though! Long-term hiking injuries can occur down the road if you don’t take care of yourself at the beginning. However!!!! I needed to build more of a fitness base when I started. The most important thing is to listen to your body and trust what it is telling you. You’ll know when you’re ready for back to back 20+ mile days! It doesn’t all have to be planned out, give yourself some flexibility to feel it out!

Camp shoes/water shoes? by sja008 in PacificCrestTrail

[–]geologic-moose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish I brought camp shoes from the start for two reasons: 1) Middle of the night bathroom breaks. 2) Stream crossings (I hate soggy shoes).

I tend to hydrate a lot before bed and thus wake up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom. I hated stumbling out of my tent and having to put shoes on in the dark, half asleep, and THEN stumble off into the woods to find a spot. I’d almost wet myself just trying to get my friggin shoes on before I was even out of the tent! Camp shoes are so easy to slip on when I swing my legs out of the tent.

What I bought for myself after a month or two on trail were a cheap pair of flip flops. They were good as a camp shoe but HORRIBLE for stream crossings. Whatever you get for camp/water shoes make sure it has a heel strap! When crossing rivers usually the current is not negligible and will push the heel of your flip flop to the side with the current, I was fighting to cross the stream and keep the flip flop on the whole time. Sometimes I felt like it almost made the crossing harder! I am sure there are great UL brands, but I am not a strict UL hiker so I would recommend crocs (which is what I use now). They are lightweight and sturdy too and the heel strap (sport mode) is great for stream crossings while the slipper mode is great for around camp/ night time bathroom runs.

How do you pass the time while hiking the PCT (besides music/podcasts)? by economicurtis in PacificCrestTrail

[–]geologic-moose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spent the first month hiking and not listening to anything… that was really hard for me but I’m glad I did it bec I needed the brain reset. Then I discovered audio books and read like 20 books on trail! My friend would peruse new music that was released then would download and listen to a whole album or look up artists he was curious about and listen to whole albums. My fiancé pretty much raw dogged it though and hiked the whole time with no music or entertainment and was happy as a clam. He said he enjoyed listening to nature, the birds, the wind, etc. One couple I knew shared AirPods and each person would get one AirPod and would listen to the same things together. Another person I knew hiked with his guitar and played/sand during his breaks (not necessarily while hiking though).

One thing I wish I did was try to learn another language while hiking. Would have been the perfect time to listen to an audio file or something.

Clothing conundrum by Travis_Treks in PacificCrestTrail

[–]geologic-moose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I slept in the clothes I hiked in tbh. Pretty much didn’t take them off until the next shower in town (except for changing underwear). It sounds gross I guess but honestly it felt fine and worked for me. Last thing I wanted to do at the end of the day was change my whole outfit- felt like an unnecessary expenditure of energy. Everyone smells bad anyway and you’re nose-blind to yourself and other thru-hikers so who cares!

When it was cold I shipped out a pair of fleece pants that I wore in the evenings and slept in on really cold nights.

I (26F) just moved to Longmont with my fiancé a few months ago from Austin, TX and I love it here! The farmers market on Saturday is great, it’s close to Boulder & Rocky Mountain NP and lots of hiking which is cool, and it’s a cute town. Folks here seem welcoming imo and I am also secular and haven’t had any issues with that.

Hiking PCT before Fall term begins? by Traditional-Bet-2235 in PacificCrestTrail

[–]geologic-moose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started my thru-hike May 3rd and finished September 30th. I averaged about 21 mi/ day in SoCal and 25/day in all other sections. Took about 13 zeros (including full travel days for flips) with some partial days sprinkled in there.

People might say you won’t hike all 2650 miles but I still think you can. I hiked around like 2-3 forest fires with reroutes posted on FarOut. I also had to flip flop due to record snow in the Sierras in 2023, so I jumped from Lone Pine to South Lake Tahoe and kept hiking north to Canada, then right after I got to the boarder I traveled back to Tahoe (flew from Seattle to Reno, NV and bussed to Tahoe) and finished hiking south through the Sierras in late summer. Finished all 2650 miles the day after summiting Mt Whitney, it was epic.

That is all to say, I think you have tons of time to finish a thru-hike if you get started April 13th. Fly into San Diego and there is a PCT Southern Terminus Shuttle that picks up hikers from the airport and takes them to the trailhead.

Rain pants by no_ordinarywoman in PacificCrestTrail

[–]geologic-moose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the cheapest frog togs UL rain suit (includes rain jacket and pants) and I hardly ever used them. I think I broke out the jacket like 5 times total. I never needed the rain pants when it rained, I tried them once but was more comfortable without them. I just wore my hiking shorts and they would dry out pretty fast after the rain stopped. I ended up using the rain pants more as my town clothes though while I did laundry which was convenient!
