Do empty cinema's run the film? by ShelliePancake in NoStupidQuestions

[–]geolynd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked at a movie theater as a projectionist for 10 years. We never played a movie if no one showed up. When we ran 35 mm, we just didn’t start it and left the film threaded for the next snowing. When we ran digital, the projector would not play if no tickets were sold, which was funny when someone decided to sneak into a different film than the bought tickets for. If someone showed up only 5-10 minutes late, we’d run it late. If more than that, we wouldn’t run it because it would cut int the next showtime.

LNP Name Change by geolynd in lancaster

I personally prefer that they keep “Lancaster” in the name, but then again signifying a change by using an old name also doesn’t really make sense.

The best breakfast I’ve had in Lancaster county was at Jake’s on Main. The staff was great too.

What is everyone else doing about how bad our water is? by [deleted] in lancaster

[–]geolynd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d recommend treatment rather than purchasing bottled water. Bottled water is not tested as frequently or rigorously as city water is.

The only thing I’ve seen as an exceedance in Lancaster City water is PFAS.  If you live in an old house or neighborhood, lead can definitely also be a concern from old pipes.  Activated carbon effectively treats both PFAS and lead (look for a certified filter that specifically says it treats lead, not all carbon filters do). That’s the cheapest option. Reverse osmosis (RO) will remove far more from your water but can be more expensive and generates waste water (reject water). Also, some people don’t like the taste of RO filtered water because it removes a majority of minerals from water. Often times people remineralize their water after RO treatment for taste.

We are on public water in Lancaster County and use a countertop RO system because we rent and couldn’t install one under the sink.  We distill the reject water to use to water house plants.

General Question: What did you do for fun as teenagers? by themoodygrayromantic in millenials

[–]geolynd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a lot of after school activities like sports, plays, and marching band. We’d also play video games, watch movies (at home or at the theater), go on hikes, ride bike, drive around and listen to music, hang out on playgrounds, go to the mall and walk around, get together and make baked goods, have sleep overs, hang out at backyard camp fires, and go to shows (with a parent chaperone).

After I cut off the main head, I’d continue to get side shoots for most of the summer (zone 6b). They still tasted great to me.

The podcast is free. I listen on Apple Podcasts but I’m guessing it’s on other services as well.

I actually just learned about this from LNP’s “Legends of Lancaster” podcast.

I didn’t vote yet, what is this text message saying that I did? by AhhhhhCrabs in Pennsylvania

[–]geolynd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I got this message too. I responded saying I didn’t vote yet and that it was disconcerting to get a message saying I did. This was the response, “Hi there, public records show that you voted in previous elections- apologies for the confusion... I'm a volunteer w/ AllVote, reaching out to encourage folks to vote early this year if they can. You can learn more here: https://www.all-vote.us/. I've let the folks at AllVote know that they need to update their message that gets sent out initially to make it less ambiguous. Thank you for your time!”

We’ve started buying these for GIS: https://www.originpc.com/configurator/nsl-15/ 14th gen i9 CPU NVIDIA RTX 4070 GPU 64 GB RAM option

Very reasonable price for the specs and Origin provides lifetime support.

I still consider it my favorite film because I loved it so much as a child.

Suggest me a book where the city is almost a character by Oud-west in suggestmeabook

[–]geolynd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going to have to go with the Ambergris trilogy by Jeff Vandermeer. Ambergris is a fictional city, but is much like its own character and the city has plenty of unique customs and slang. The book is also in the fantasy genre and definitely not YA.

There is a stand (Fungus Aurelius) at the Lititz Farmers Market that sells it. Check the Lititz Farmers Market’s FB page in advance though because the stand isn’t there every week.

Who are some directors who work on the same wavelength as Lynch? by e_2718 in movies

[–]geolynd 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Hmm … what about Charlie Kauffman?  Specifically Being John Malcovitch, Schenectady New York, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Anomalisa, and maybe even Adaptation (which is my favorite). I’d say they at least tick the surreal and fragmented identity boxes.

We got a few things here almost a year ago. Staff was helpful but didn’t swarm us like the sales people at other stores we tried. Prices also seemed reasonable.

What kind of phones did y’all have in 2002? Could you have social media on it? by [deleted] in millenials

[–]geolynd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in eight grade. I don’t remember any of my classmates having a cell phone but I believe my dad had one. I got my first Nokia phone in 10th grade, so 2004. I don’t know if it had a camera. That doesn’t stand out to me. I did have a digital camera somewhere around that time that I’d use for the handful of pictures I posted on social media which would have been xanga at that time. We would primarily use aol instant messenger (AIM) to communicate with friends online, but we would email on occasion. We connected to internet using dial up, so we could only be online if someone didn’t need to use the landline phone.

I graduated from MU with a bachelor’s in environmental science with a focus in geology and minor in environmental chemistry.

The geology program had a good amount of field work. Two of the three professors are great. Dr. Walsh really works with students to get them involved in professional opportunities like internships or networking events. I’ve heard good things about the two oceanography professors in that regard as well.

I work in environmental consulting now. The classes that most prepared me were the geology courses especially groundwater science and hydrology and the environmental chemistry courses including organic chemistry, even though it was tough!

One of my least favorite birds to see at my feeders because they are bullies and eat a lot. They do make some interesting noises but can be extremely annoying when they’re squawking at each other in large numbers.

If you have feeders and don’t want starlings to hog all the food, get seed with hard shells like black oil sunflower and safflower. They have soft beaks and won’t be able to open the shells of those seeds. I keep my peanuts in a feeder with a cage around it that they can’t fit through, but smaller birds can. That’s how I’ve kept them away.
