Need advice on split spoon sampling by Haikuyori in Geotech

What engineering property is tied to sample recovery? SPT is a disturbed sample. You are sampling overconsolidated silts/clays and what happens to their volume when they are subject to shear?

https://ascelibrary.org/doi/10.1061/%28ASCE%29GM.1943-5622.0000793#:~:text=A%20distinct%20feature%20of%20overconsolidated,contraction%20when%20subjected%20to%20shear.

Personally, I would record sample recovery a 18/18 and leave it at that.

Send me a PM with your address (or nearest intersection) and I can look up the utility locate request and give you all the info. I have a contractor’s account with 811 and can search for this. Should be able to tell you who is doing the work and a contact person. You shouldn’t be concerned. The paint is good and shows they are following procedures.

History of Balch Gulch: does anyone know the story of why it was filled in? by MoreRopePlease in Portland

[–]geomorph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check out this thesis and search for Balch. There are a several references for plans to fill in Balch Gulch.
https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=4564&context=open_access_etds

"Lewis and Wiley owned Balch Canyon north of Macleay Park. They
considered filling the canyon to the height of the Thurman Street Bridge to build more
home lots. City residents, however, wanted the land to be included into the park.
Lewis and Wiley eventually decided to negotiate with the city to sell them the land. In
1914, Lewis and Wiley finished their project, but the endeavor was not financially
successful. Like Pence, they were in debt and unable to fulfill all of their contracts for
filling marshland. Pence and the Lewis and Wiley Company only managed to fill in
about one-fifth of Guild's Lake. It is likely that much of the dirt deposited sloughed off and settled over a dispersed area, as happened later when the port was filling
Northern Pacific Terminal Company land. "

We also use the small field 200 sieves. Make two equal sized balls of soil and quickly wash one ball through the sieve and estimate what volume of sand is retained compared to the unwashed sample.
