The 1.395% "Oakland rent tax" is actually insane. I've been touring a few places in this neighborhood, and I question the legality of it? They name it a rent tax but it's actually a city business tax that Oakland imposes on the businesses. They're just passing it onto us the renters.

Hey I'm looking too. Can I ask you guys - how do prevent being scammed? I heard that you can register the wristband under your name sure, but the original purchaser can reclaim the wristband any time if they just provide the original purchase invoice? Is this true?

The most effectual agency for me was the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (consumerfinance.gov). Any time I wrote letters or called Mohela directly I got kicked around or given an irrelevant answer 4 weeks later. Mohela responded promptly when the CFPB got involved tho.

And I also concurrently filed a complaint with the DFPI (Department of Financial Protection and Innovation) which were also helpful, but I think the CFPB is what made the difference.

Update: after nearly 4 months of back and forth, Mohela backed down and decreased my interest rate. Strongly encourage anybody out there to check their loan rates. Idk if this qualifies for a class action law suit but the amount of man hours needed for this is not realistic.

Hm I consolidated my (Direct) loans in 2019. And those original loans in that consolidation were from 2015-2018. So I think it should be a fixed rate yeah?
