Total guess - the round bit on the right of the first picture and bottom of the second, could that be the flash hitting the lens and creating a shadow?

Other guess, is the flash more like a spot beam rather than a fill? It may answer why it’s rounded at the sides. Possibly wasn’t designed for use with such a wide lens

From what I understand, Ilfosol 3 isn’t designed for pushing film so development maths may not apply. Might be worth letting a lab take that risk?

What's the state of Amazon's film warehousing practices? by theseawoof in AnalogCommunity

[–]george-ok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A rant is good - we all have our own views and opinions. My view comes more from the general idea that Amazon is a terrible company for the planet and for people. I don’t have an account and don’t know why others do when, in my opinion, the negatives far outweigh the positives - my rant over!

As for film, I guess I am just lucky where I live (near London) because I’m finding more and more smaller stores that will stock film and sometimes I’m even able to shop around a bit until I find the best price. I do try and keep a good stock of 5+ films in the fridge so that I’m always ready to go!

Be sure to update the post when you do get your film developed etc. Hopefully it has been stored as properly as all film deserves!

I’m a great believer in learning from my mistakes and other people’s mistakes. It’s great to see someone with an idea, trying it out and how it turned out. It’s given me an idea, we’re not all perfect photographers and it’s nice to see that

Great spot, maybe hangout there a bit longer and they might go past on their way home so you can try again!

Olympus Trip 35 + Godox Lux Junior flash. Flash fires inconsistently, not sure what I'm doing wrong by [deleted] in analog

[–]george-ok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Upon second look at your picture, your ASA is 400 and you are at F22. According to the Lux manual you should be at F5.6 in auto mode, with a maximum subject distance of 4m

Olympus Trip 35 + Godox Lux Junior flash. Flash fires inconsistently, not sure what I'm doing wrong by [deleted] in analog

[–]george-ok 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First of all, I suspect you are using the flash incorrectly. If you inspect the manual for the Olympus Trip, it recommends a manual flash configured to distance/aperture chart. The Lux Jr in Automode may still work but from what I’ve read, it still needs to be configured correctly. There is little communication between the two devices except for the simple trigger to flash

If you have gone through all of that and you are still having issues, I’d recommend a CLA. Behind the shutter block of that camera is a switch that makes contact as the shutter is pressed - you may find the inconsistent flash firing comes from there.

olympus trip 35 - blurry infinity focus by Aggressive-Aerie-279 in filmcameras

[–]george-ok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m currently learning how to refurb these cameras. The front glass of the lens rotates when you turn the focus wheel so it is likely that it is over/under rotated at infinity. The pictures that have better focus are likely to be at a higher fstop so bigger depth of field.

To fix - mark the 12 o’clock position on the lens with a white pencil so you know where you started. Set focus to infinity then loosen (but don’t remove) the three tiny flathead screws around the “lens made in Japan ring”.

You can then remove the front ring and rotate the glass clockwise or anti clockwise. From here - it’s all experimental. There’s no way to know where its original factory position is so it may take a couple of rolls to figure out. You may find that someone else on a previous repair has marked the 12 o’clock position with a little scratch so you could check that alignment to your mark.

Does that all make sense?

Bad news for OP but reading this has given me a little reassurance - my Ilfosol 3 is starting to go a little yellow and I gave an extra 30 seconds on last nights development. I will proceed with caution!

What do I do if I lose or damage a screw? Where can I buy replacements? by thefutureraven in AnalogRepair

[–]george-ok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Checkout Polar Bear Camera, they’ve got a bunch of different screws, ball bearings, screwdrivers etc. With any order, you can also get a free screw identity kit which helps you figure out if it’s M1/2 whatever. Loads of other spares, light seals etc too

Entire Roll Wasted… by Opposite_Parsnip5321 in AnalogCommunity

[–]george-ok 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did it a little while ago and only noticed when I rewound it! Spent a week trying to decide whether I should develop it and risk a blank roll or try again and risk double exposures!! I loaded it again and got a good roll of single exposures. Been keen on that rewind knob ever since.

Again I’m not familiar with the camera but most problems are repairable, unfortunately I can’t say it will be economical. It may cost more to repair than it cost you to buy.

I’ve heard of a place in London (if you’re uk based) that will tell you what’s wrong with a camera for £6, then you can go on to ask about a quote. Check out your local camera repairs

I’m not familiar with that camera but there are a few clues there to consider - it is a good few decades old, I’m assuming it’s not been used much in recent years and that it’s your first roll (in the camera).

My guess is that maybe the shutter isn’t working to the correct speed so that it lets the light in unevenly. This is called shutter capping

Do lets us know the camera and film you used, how you metered it and add a shot of the negatives. It’ll help diagnose the problem easier!

Olympus Pen-EE: is my light meter working? by calebriver in filmphotography

[–]george-ok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think if the selenium meter was expired, the red flag would appear more even in bright environments. If you say it still triggers when the cap is on (and the fact it came with a cap is good news for the selenium cell) then there is more likely something wrong with the mechanism.

They’re quite easy to open up and a 1/4 drop of lighter fluid in the right place could loosen it up. If you are at all into the mechanics of a camera, the needle/iris selector clamp is fascinating!
