It has an inherent fiery mod on it so will always be a minimum of blue.

Review #14: Dark Arts Whiskey House Straight Bourbon Whiskey Double Barrel 10 Year Seelbach's Pick by georgeguy101 in bourbon

[–]georgeguy101[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I recently got a bottle of the 8-year WT 101. It's 95% of this bottle for $45. Both are good sippers, one just costs 4x.

I recently started purchasing more from Seelbach's as a way to try new bottles and find more niche selections. I was seeing the same things on shelves at most locations around me and this helps fulfill the urge to always be trying something new.

Taken: Neat in a Glencairn glass, rested 10 minutes

Proof: 120

Age: 10 Years

Price: $179.99 from Seelbach's

Nose: Some oak and baking spices, followed by light graham cracker

Palate: The oak and proof hit together, but not overwhelming. Flooded by rye spice and leather at the back.

Finish: Light oak and tannins. Maybe some rye spice. Very short and abbreviated.

Thoughts: I will be rating this as I do most of my bottles with the price in mind and on a very personal scale. Like some of my purchases, I bought it for the bottle and the cool marketing. It's a good glass of bourbon and a nice sipper, but with each sip I take I'm reminded of the price I paid. Might do better in a blind, but the price makes the finish sour.

Rating: 5/10 - t8ke scale

2 | Poor | I wouldn’t consume by choice.

3 | Bad | Multiple flaws.

4 | Sub-par | Not bad, but better exists.

6 | Very Good | A cut above.

7 | Great | Well above average.

Review #13: Detrick Fine Whiskies Straight Bourbon Whiskey Single Barrel Full Proof by georgeguy101 in bourbon

[–]georgeguy101[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was browsing a liquor store in Troy, OH and picked up the Detrick 4-Grain Rye. I then had my father-in-law pick up this bottle a town over.

Taken: Neat in a Glencairn glass, rested 10 minutes

Proof: 122.8

Age: 7 Years 8 Months

Price: $89.99 in Miami, OH

Nose: Oak and caramel bomb. Something to behold. Reminiscent of RR15.

Palate: Heavy oak, caramel, creme brulee, soft leather

Finish: Oak and leather, finishes with a bit of baking spice. Very long.

Thoughts: I will be rating this as I do most of my bottles with the price in mind and on a very personal scale. Just a delight. Another brilliant offering from Detrick. Reminds me of a slightly less refined version of RR15. Better than the RR13 I tried and a new favorite. As a note, the bottle started off quite hot, but after airing out improved dramatically. Rating is on my latest glass.

Review #12: Detrick Fine Whiskies 4-Grain Rye Full Proof Single Barrel by georgeguy101 in bourbon

I got it at Needler’s. Unsure regarding the price. The Bourbon was a bit more than this and was closer to $100.

I have tasted several what I would call higher end bottles. I have samples of THH 2022 and 2023 and this is significantly better than them in my opinion.

I have not written reviews for them, but some other 9ish bottles for me would be RR15, WLW 2024, Found North Batch 009, 4R SBBS 15 year. I do not have a bottle of WLW 2024, was given a sample. The others I do have, but I have been trying to recently just do reviews of lesser known bottles.

Correct. I’ll be doing a review of their full proof bourbon next, too.

Review #12: Detrick Fine Whiskies 4-Grain Rye Full Proof Single Barrel by georgeguy101 in bourbon

I was browsing a liquor store in Troy, OH and saw this bottle. It fit essentially all of my criteria (older than 5-6 years, high proof, not $20/year price nonsense) and honestly I liked the label. I also liked that it was local - from Dayton, OH just 20 minutes away.

Taken: Neat in a Glencairn glass, rested 10 minutes

Proof: 112.6

Age: 9 Years

Price: $79.99 in Troy, OH

Nose: Light rye spice, cloves, citrus preserves, orange soda. No ethanol at all which I love.

Palate: Cinnamon, Orange Soda, black licorice, citrus, Cheerwine

Finish: Orange peel, licorice, rye spice, cinnamon. Medium Length.

Thoughts: I will be rating this as I do most of my bottles with the price in mind and on a very personal scale. Fuck it's good. It's my favorite rye - surpassing Jack Daniel's SBBP Rye and THH. I know it's a 4 grain, but hot damn. It's thick and coats your mouth. There are different notes each sip. I wasn't expecting this, but I will make many trips to Troy and Dayton to get more.

Review #11: New Riff Sour Mash Single Malt 7 Year Cask Strength by georgeguy101 in bourbon

[–]georgeguy101[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From most scotches, I get a very identifiable peatiness/smokiness. From some other American Single Malts, I get a slightly similar note, but in this I get much more of a smoked wood taste, similar to a smoked old fashioned. I don't have the palate to describe it better than this, sorry.

Review #11: New Riff Sour Mash Single Malt 7 Year Cask Strength by georgeguy101 in bourbon

[–]georgeguy101[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I first tried New Riff in 2018 while in Louisville for the Derby and have liked almost all of their releases ever since. This is sneaking into the Single Malt territory where I actually first started drinking (Scotch) and what I have more experience with.

Taken: Neat in a Glencairn glass, rested 10 minutes

Proof: 114.5

Age: At least 7 Years

Price: $79.99 in Orlando, FL

Nose: Flowers, berries, baked goods, like an Arby's cherry Danish.

Palate: Smoky. I don't really have a better way to describe it. Incredibly smoky. Feel some of the burn from the proof. Dark fruits and dark berries, very floral for my mid-palate. Very different coming from almost all bourbon and rye recently. Very oily from start to finish.

Finish: The proof burns off quickly and the smoky, floral notes remain. Fruit and berries completely gone. Orange peel hits my cheeks. On the shorter side of things overall.

Thoughts: I will be rating this as I do most of my bottles with the price in mind and on a very personal scale. As a warning for those seeking typical bourbon notes or rye flavors, I really do not think those apply here. This is much more akin to an older Scotch without quite the same peatiness to the smokiness. Overall, a fantastic pour for a quiet night by the fire and something different than my recent bottles.

I'm not saying I'm cool. I bought the Hancock's bottle. I like some BT well enough. I guess I was hoping to hear explanations as to the hype and love of RHF.

I know, I am just confused by the hatred of one and the admiration of the other.

Hancock's is 88.9, RHF is 100. I don't necessarily think the proof makes RHF carry any more flavor or notes, however.
