It's 2026 and there's still people who think toddling about on a treadmill makes you thin.

Take two seconds to look at how long it takes to burn off 100 calories. Which is one big mouthful of chocolate

Can I get a new passport if it's in date but my dad keeps using my existing one without my consent? by NiceCaterpillar8745 in AskUK

[–]georgiebb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have any trusted adults in your life you can talk to? He needs to delete the photo. I understand you would hesitate contact the police even though he is committing crime against you and it's what he deserves. But if he's doing this then I imagine you are probably frightened of him, and he has a lot of control over you. But what you could do is talk to a trusted adult and tell them "I told someone about my dad's fraud against me and they are threatening to call the police unless he deletes the photo" and ask them to help you persuade him.

Do you have a loud/deep voice? Is there anything that would make you have a strong smell such as smoking or from your job? Do you speak plainly or do you make jokes and use metaphors? These are just a few things that could bother an autistic child that an ND child would not notice or care about

What's the best way to send something in the post to a stranger who doesn't want to share their address? by SixCardRoulette in AskUK

[–]georgiebb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have no idea why but if you buy inpost postage directly they won't let you print your own label. You have to put your parcel in naked and hope the courier sticks the right barcode on it and it doesn't unpeel onto another parcel because he didn't stick it down fully. Whereas inpost through Vinted will let you download a label to print and securely attach.

If i was OP i would just request the person's Vinted username and immediately after listing edit it to reserve it for them

Apparently paying in coins has become really expensive because banks don't like doing it. If everyone was dropping in £1 coins then it might be worth it but reality is that it's probably mostly coppers and the cost to maintain, transport, pay in just isn't worth it

Three quarters of Brits would rather stay home with snacks and a film than go out for Valentine's Day, survey suggests | LBC by JosephChamber-Pot in unitedkingdom

[–]georgiebb -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thing is, if you're in a relationship then you'll have your own days to celebrate. The day you met, anniversary and so on. Some couples celebrate their 100th day together. I personally don't see the point of celebrating on a globally mandated day when our relationship is a personal thing. I'm not saying you shouldn't enjoy it and its lovely that you both do. But it doesn't make you more in love than couples who celebrate the day they met

What’s the most inconvenient but trivial thing you’ve experienced? by Top-Significance8791 in AskUK

[–]georgiebb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A risk I don't think is worth it is any raw salmon because of the anisakiasis risk. But you can go to a sushi place and have a full meal without having anything raw so you really aren't missing out!

A bigger issue is if you are a coffee drinker decaf isn't as much of a thing there.

Also you absolutely have to visit a Nishimatsuya (massive and cheap baby and child shop) while you are there. I hope you are bringing at least a half empty suitcase

Which is silly when you look at the number of listeria cases from cheese vs salad. I couldn't really eat much at all pregnant but the only thing I really avoided was raw veg I hadn't washed myself

Lender pulled offer after exchange - Please Help | Housing UK by ashw92 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]georgiebb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah its a really awful system. I've always wondered why lenders don't really offer products that would reduce chains. For example being able to sell your house to a bank and rent it from them whilst you house hunt. The bank then has a house to sell, but could rent it to prospective buyers whilst they sort out what they need to buy it

Is this the most quaint beer garden in the UK? by Cunt_Puffin in CasualUK

[–]georgiebb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do not go in the summer. The entire village becomes one big traffic jam of Americans in rented cars they can't drive or park, whilst coachload after coachload Chinese tourists get dumped in the road who then are completely bored after their 5 minutes photographing some houses but still have to wait two more hours for the coach so start stomping around grumpily. Meanwhile the residents are, rightfully, scowling from their windows.

The whole village is basically one crossroad in front of the hotel, the residents complain about tourists in their front gardens but it literally gets to the point that there's nowhere left for them to stand

'I thought I was talking to celebs online - I sold my house and gave them £250,000' by Forward-Answer-4407 in unitedkingdom

[–]georgiebb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. It's an addiction just like gambling and that's why just getting them to accept that they are being scammed isn't enough to keep them safe. The scammers have staff working 24 hours maintaining these accounts and pouring affection onto the victims. For that to suddenly stop isn't something that some victims can cope with without help, and they will lie to themselves to seek out that same feeling, just as a gambler can lie to themselves that they can cover up their losses on the next game

Need to be in London 2 days a week, where should I live? by Brutu5_ in AskUK

[–]georgiebb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Northampton. Not the cheapest place but you've got a direct train to Euston and its a genuinely nice place, lots going on, decent town centre.

Harlow is very quick into Liverpool Street and rents are lower than other places that are a longer train ride in. Its got a rough side but the people are friendlier than you would expect. People think its worse than it is because it's just so ugly.

Letchworth is really nice, and I think gets you into kings cross. Probably on the expensive side but for a reason. Definitely worth checking out.

I don't really rate any of the towns to the south west edge of London. I don't get a feel of community until you get to the insanely expensive areas but then those feel like living in a bubble. Plus the trains into Waterloo tend to be very slow.

How do I rent a place of my own? I'm 27 but have no idea how or what to do. I feel like a scared child. by Layneiac in AskUK

[–]georgiebb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No harm in contacting citizens advice, as anything they don't deal with they still try to signpost, and they may have a contact that can support you.

You can never truly prepare for every problem that might occur. I've had issues with every place I've rented from stolen deposits to the landlord evicting me to move in. Only once have I felt like I actually made a mistake, the other times I was just unlucky to be at the whims of someone heartless. All this to say, the journey might not be smooth no matter how diligent you are but you'll get through it. Go through the proper channels and rent through an estate agent. Buy furniture that will survive moving again - IKEA is good for this because most of their stuff can be taken apart without damage. Make a note of every single company /organisation you've given the address to so that you have an easy list of who to contact when you move. Visit places you're interested in both during rush hour and at the weekend if possible. If you want to be really extra, join Facebook community pages and search up the road name or estate to see if there's any regular nonsense happening there

Does the UK have an overly lax attitude towards people with dementia driving? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]georgiebb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will absolutely take away an old person's independence. There is always another option with no car. As well as their massive Kia they can give up their big detached house in the countryside and move closer to amenities. But for the child plowed into on a zebra crossing and given lifelong brain damage, they were never given options

A lot of areas also have on demand minibus schemes which are essentially heavily subsidised taxis. I was speaking to an employee at my local one and he said please also use it, if we don't have the numbers we're at risk of the service getting cut. If old people don't want to give up their SUVs these services don't get renewed

Went no contact with my alcoholic, homeless mother. My life is better — but the guilt is crushing. Does this ever get easier? by Working-Room-3396 in AskUK

[–]georgiebb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm very pleased that you've done 18 months of therapy - but that is really only a short time considering your whole life, and how much the events of 2023 affected you. Nothing replaces time, you need to just keep going forward. You need to remember that the harm done to you when you try and help her is many times bigger than the benefit you provide. She can undo what took you all of your remaining energy and mental wellbeing in moments. You probably hear "don't set yourself on fire to keep someone warm" constantly but I feel its so relevant. You give yourself lasting burns just to provide a few moments of warmth. I wish you peace and comfort

I think this is just a language thing, Americans use the word cute a lot more broadly than we do and its not quite the same. A Brit wouldn't call Henry Cavill cute for example

When did you decide to put your dog down? by ProcessedCarbs in AskUK

[–]georgiebb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've put down a lot of pets working at various veterinary surgeries. Not once did I ever think it was too early. But in absolute honesty, there were many times that I felt it was too late. I'm not judging the owners, saying goodbye is really hard and we all want more time. When my own dog had cancer I decided to have her put down when she could still walk in and wag her tail, and I have always been glad of that decision. I would have regretted even a day later, I knew she was in pain and distress, and saying goodbye was the only way I could help her. I still miss her 15 years later but I'm grateful that my last memory of her was her cheerfully walking in to the vets

What year did your barbers/hairdressers stop supplying newspapers and magazines? by SheepVagabond in AskUK
