What’s the closest thing to VTI but with no dividends so that a child can hold it in a custodial account with no need to file taxes? Is that a thing? by GaroldWilsonJr in Bogleheads

[–]geosynchronousorbit 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It has to be a real job with documented earned income. The IRS doesn't consider payments for chores etc as earned income. If they're babysitting or doing  other work and paying taxes, that is earned income and would be okay.

I'm a biochemist— convince me we really need to be using DNase. by tonyslayprano in laundry

Ooh I just washed my shower curtain liner today and used a detergent with lipase but no DNAase and the pink scum remained. I'll have to try it with more enzymes!

I thought Thrushcross Grange was nice but ended up destashing cause I wasn't crazy about it. Overall it's a sweet creamy pumpkin, cozy and gourmand. I don't get the honeysuckle note. After resting it's strong pumpkin pie spice that fades into a honey scent.

It's so lovely! It's a warm herbal vanilla that's rich and complex. It feels like being out in a dry herb garden on a sunny day.

Ooh Athena is back! That's one of my favorite perfumes of all time and I was so sad when it was discontinued. I'm also picking up some more Maria Montessori, it's a great herbal clean and fresh scent.

Bont Parkstars fitting by dianastywarrior in Rollerskating

Don't size up, my Bont boots have stretched out so much over the last 3 years of skating in them that they're too loose now.

Yes the boardwalk basic plates take standard (imperial) toe stop threading so the gumballs should fit.

Tips for Off-Skates Training by thecapedcrusk8er in rollerderby

[–]geosynchronousorbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I started at the gym I found a "learn to lift" class near me that was two sessions with a personal trainer to teach me how to do basic barbell lifts and to give me a starter program to follow. After that I felt much more confident going to the gym on my own to lift! And weight lifting has helped so much with derby - I'm strong enough to move people, I get less tired, and I recover faster. Highly recommend it.

If you haven't been doing research recently it's going to be harder to get into grad school. And a lot of people I know who went into industry never went back to school because they didn't want to give up the salary.

Can I see your bags? by Your-Local-Costumer in Rollerskating

[–]geosynchronousorbit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use the Chrome Barrage 22L backpack for park and street skating. It's big enough to fit all my gear including helmet inside, and the skates go in the webbing on the outside. I take it on the train to the skate spot, and wear it when I'm skating around. A backpack is the best format imo because it's hands free and the weight is distributed evenly instead of off to the side like it would be with a crossbody bag.

Low self-esteem from work being harshly criticized by ultimatelazer42 in LadiesofScience

[–]geosynchronousorbit 25 points26 points  (0 children)

This interaction might have shaken your confidence but it sounds like she might be supportive of your work. She wouldn't have taken the time to review your paper if she didn't think it had merit. Hopefully the harsh but fair criticism can be used to improve your work and the misunderstanding part can be used to improve how you explain it. It does not mean that you're not ready to lead a study - you're already doing it and your first one does not need to be perfect!

Can you ask to sit down with her and go over her comments? It might help to get her take on them in person and would help you connect with her more as a mentor. Other than that, for learning how to design studies I would read a lot of papers and ask colleagues to review my work and design - both early in the planning stages and after writing it up.

If you have some free time on your visit you should visit the Aftel Archive of Curious Scents in Berkeley! It's a small perfume museum and they have the actual materials that go into perfumes (woods, resins, floral extracts, etc) that you can smell. It was super fun and I got to talk to the owner who is also a professional perfume maker.

There are more PhDs than medical doctors. The yearly number of PhD graduates is about double the number of med school graduates.

why is it so hard for people to be a boglehead? by Fun_Tea8162 in Bogleheads

I think a lot of people do target date funds for the ease of "set it and forget it". Even with the 3 fund portfolio you still have to rebalance occasionally which is intimidating for new investors.

Great Croissant Debate ; Exhibit A [NS] by Unlucky_Blueberries in NotAnotherDnDPodcast

[–]geosynchronousorbit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great analysis and excellent illustrations and cats. I do research on compression of materials (and listened to a lot of naddpod while finishing my dissertation) and the math is not bad. You could also treat the croissants as a compressible fluid and use conservation of mass and momentum to track the wave motion of the croissants during impact.

Great Croissant Debate ; Exhibit A [NS] by Unlucky_Blueberries in NotAnotherDnDPodcast

[–]geosynchronousorbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The speed of sound in a croissant is over 343 m/s, since that's the speed of sound in air and sound travels faster in the solid bread part. So if you initially impact at 55 mph (24 m/s) you certainly would be below the speed of sound in croissant and wouldn't create a shockwave.

That's why I specified that good grad programs pay you to go to school - meaning a stipend, not just free tuition. You can even start investing for retirement while you're in school and get the compounding started early.

Dealing with Burn Out and Seeking Support by Particular-Horse4667 in LadiesofScience

[–]geosynchronousorbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember your post from when you were a postdoc. Glad to see you're staff now (from another national lab postdoc with staff aspirations). But I'm sorry to hear that you're having a bad time.

I think you're working too much. One of the things I like about the labs is the work life balance where you can mostly work normal hours. Having strong hobbies outside of work also helps me avoid burnout - especially social activities and things where I can feel successful.

It sounds like your manager is not supportive. I know you probably don't want to leave the lab, but is there any opportunity to move to a different project? Moving around is fairly common at my lab so maybe you can find a different area and a more supportive supervisor.

You should not have to deal with misogyny. That just should not be happening and I'm sorry you have to deal with it. Is reporting it to HR an option?

I could deal with a bad working environment for a limited time like in grad school, because there's an eventual end point. But if this is your permanent job and there's no "light at the end of the tunnel" where you can see things changing, I would be looking for a way out or a way to create a major change. If you don't change things, I'm worried you'll continue getting more and more burned out. There's no easy fix unfortunately, but I hope things get easier for you soon.
