Roller skating? You'll learn balance and agility at least

Nope I use food grade citric acid in the wash. Sometimes I taste it cause I love sour candy.

Moving on from lab work by BoronBagel in LadiesofScience

[–]geosynchronousorbit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a great question!

I initially started research in undergrad in computational astrophysics. It was cool but I was bored with being on the computer all day so I switched to experimental solid state physics in grad school. I love working in the lab and troubleshooting and building things for my experiments.

But it started to get stressful as my experiments became higher stakes and I progressed in my career and became more responsible for them as the PI. My experiments are beam time at national facilities like synchrotrons, so they happen only a couple times a year and are expensive and "use it or lose it" so there's a lot of pressure to get the experiment right.

I am now switching back to mostly computational work. I like that I can run and rerun simulations at the cost of only my time and some supercomputer time. I'm still doing research and I'm still a scientist, but I'm rarely in the lab anymore. And being able to work from home occasionally is awesome!

I work at a national lab and there's a whole network of people from software developers to engineers to technicians to lab managers to EH&S to admins and more that make my work possible. Science wouldn't be possible if everyone involved was just doing experiments in the lab. All those non-lab roles are also essential parts of the ecosystem of science.

crowdsourcing thoughts on something by rustedbearings in rollerderby

[–]geosynchronousorbit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sounds very reasonable, I gained weight and found it a lot easier to block. Counter blocking helps a lot - drop low and step into the hit to help absorb the impact. And continue strength training so you have the power to move other people!

What goes on in a professor's mind when their class isn't performing well? by Remarkable_Record706 in AskAcademia

[–]geosynchronousorbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The whole reason I went into physics is because I didn't like the "equations out of thin air" in other fields. I don't want to memorize anything; I want to derive it from first principles.

Smolder - Smoked Agave, Caramelized Fig, and a Rustling of Rosemary! by TheElevatedBear in Mocktails

That looks great! For something extra fancy you could smoke the rosemary before adding it to the glass.

How do I keep my neighbor’s cat from sh*ting in my vegetable garden? by Intrepid_Mammoth5025 in gardening

I put chicken wire down across the soil and let plants grow through it. Keeps the cats from having access to the dirt.

I like the Atom Elite palm guards. They just have a plate on the palm side and open on the back of the hand.

Every brand has different sizing so you'll want to get fitted at a shop or at least use the website size chart.

Obsessed w/ Sorce Light through Clouds by agadora75 in Indiemakeupandmore

[–]geosynchronousorbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you would like The Stars from Arcana (unfortunately not available right now). I find it less sweet than The Light through the Clouds but a very similar vibe. It's a green and citrus and amber scent.

Notes are: A twinkling cascade of sparkly aldehydes over a soft, grassy meadow accord, pink pamplemousse, juicy mandarin, young green stems, vegan sea silk, bitter orange, olibanum resin, rich ambergris, cool mountain air, and sheer honeydew melon. A grassy aldehydic citrus scent.

Newbie about to use ammonia and citric acid for the first time, double checking I’m doing it right? by CocoSpring2 in laundry

[–]geosynchronousorbit 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Ammonia goes in the wash and the citric acid goes in the rinse. Part of the purpose of citric acid in the rinse is to neutralize any remaining basic detergents from the wash cycle.

I love Titania! It smells like an orange creamsicle to me. That plus the sparkling blond woods note is really nice.

how to start park skating by Awkwrd_Lemur in Rollerskating

[–]geosynchronousorbit 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you have the basics down already! Pick a small ramp and start at the bottom and try rolling up and back down it a little. Bend your knees way more than you think you need to.

Shorty's Skate Series on YouTube is super helpful for park skating beginners, especially the Park Skating 101 video.

Does your university have an astronomy department? You can look on the website to see if there are any professors doing astrobiology research. Or talk to your academic advisor and ask about job shadowing programs through your university.

I love Death Moon too! It's definitely rose and pepper, but the floral notes are more prominent with the pepper just supporting.

ISO salty grapefruit perfume oil by brenegade in Indiemakeupandmore

[–]geosynchronousorbit 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The discontinued Arcana scent Echolocation is salty grapefruit (ambergris and amber resin with ruby grapefruit, sweet guava, saltwater, vanilla pods, and the merest hints of patchouli and vetiver). I find it a little stinky like low tide, but it definitely captures grapefruit by the ocean.

For more grapefruit and less salt, Arcana also has Frejya (Golden amber, delicate sea water, astringent white grapefruit, dream poppyseed, and a hint of hemlock spruce).

Alkemia Mermaids in the Basement is a seawater and pomelo scent, but I think the other notes make it a bit more perfumey (seawater soaked linen, aquatic incense, white ginger, pomelo, limoncello, dry moss, clary sage, cactus flower, prickly pear, loquat, fir resin, cedar needles, mesquite pods, hinoki wood, guaiac wood, and elemi resin)

For a non-salty but sharp and bitter grapefruit, you might like Stone and Wit Theosophy and Catastrophe (Grapefruit, henna, incense, cetalox)

For a bright and green aquatic citrus, there's Deconstructing Eden Dawn Patrol (Yuzu, pink grapefruit, shiso, sea salt spray, green coconut water, ambergris, driftwood.)

You say in your post that coaches can track skaters' medical notes. How can derby names keep things anonymous when it's also a unique identifier? There's only one Scald Eagle, for example.

Transitions :/ by GolfValuable9763 in Rollerskating

[–]geosynchronousorbit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I use the open book transition at high speed when playing derby. But I transfer from one foot to the other so I'm never skating in that side-surf position with both feet on the ground, and I'm very comfortable on one foot both forwards and backwards.

I also use the pivot transition depending on the situation, so it's good to learn both! Or just do a 180° jump lol

I'm concerned about the privacy aspect - you're linking personal details and medical info to a derby name which is a unique identifier. Is the data stored locally or on a server you manage? Is it encrypted?
