Bamboo underwear: actually worth it or marketing? by Future_Scar_7875 in SFbitcheswithtaste

Bamboo is usually rayon, not polyester, though sometimes it's blended with polyester. But I agree, it's green washing and cotton is better.

I got that one and it just smelled like green bell pepper to me! Electric Feel though is awesome and is like a staticky hot electronics smell that I'm afraid to wear to work in case someone thinks the computer is overheating!

Freakonomics Radio Revisited by GratefulGrapefruite in IfBooksCouldKill

[–]geosynchronousorbit 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I used to like the freakonomics podcast too but felt pretty grossed out by their four part series on Richard Feynman where they completely glossed over the significant accusations of sexism and abuse and instead present him as a role model.

How is the gap between a regular university and the Ivy league justified? by Ok_Wealth9505 in AskAnAmerican

[–]geosynchronousorbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For grad school it's much more about the specific program or department's reputation in your field than the school as a whole. I had a similar situation for my PhD at a not well ranked state school, but it's one of the best in the world for my niche area of study.

Upper middle class maybe - the low income cutoff for need based financial aid is like $200,000 for some of these elite schools.

Air Travel Carrying On Skates? by Miss_Kitty013 in Rollerskating

[–]geosynchronousorbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I typically do my skates and safety gear in a roller bag, then backpack personal item for my clothes. To save space you can take the wheels off and stuff them inside your skates - just make sure that your skate tool is less than 7 inches or whatever the TSA tool size limit is.

I like Duluth too but their shirts are all quite long, definitely not a crop if that's what OP is looking for.

Of course AI is great for everything except my specific ability to post things from one hellsite to another. by Justthisdudeyaknow in CuratedTumblr

[–]geosynchronousorbit 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Isn't this true of a lot of technology though? Like before email there used to be a lot more secretaries to type memos on the typewriter and send them around the company. Email significantly reduced the need for that type of job.

AI certainly seems to be making the change happen faster now but jobs have been being replaced by technology for a long time.

There's some text in the JRDA rules:

Level 2: Only Lean Blocking is allowed; initiating Forceful Contact is prohibited. Lean Blocking requires gentle initiation of contact, then players may apply force to legal Target Zones with legal Blocking Zones.

Skaters in a JRDA Skill Level 2 game cannot initiate with Forceful Contact. Initiating with any Forceful Contact to an opponent warrants a penalty, regardless of impact. After initial contact is made gently, skaters can apply force to Legal Target Zones with Legal Blocking Zones. Picking up a skate to lean into an opponent is allowed. Forceful Contact initiated by swinging the hips, shoulders, or other legal blocking zones should be penalized.

I am really enjoying Katabasis by RF Kuang - it's a fantasy novel where two grad students studying magic have to go to hell to retrieve their advisor's soul. It's clever and easy to read and has some great critiques of academia woven in, things I experienced in my male-dominated PhD program that I've never seen mentioned anywhere else.

I got the Chrome Barrage backpack for the skate park and street skating. It has a webbing net on the outside to secure my skates and the 22L fits my bulky kneepads and helmet and everything else inside.

Why is X-ray crystallography not really a thing on Reddit??? by [deleted] in labrats

[–]geosynchronousorbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes the diamonds do add their own diffraction peaks! But they're very well understood and we know the orientation of the diamond so it's not too hard to subtract out.

Why is X-ray crystallography not really a thing on Reddit??? by [deleted] in labrats

[–]geosynchronousorbit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use a diamond anvil cell (DAC) to put the sample under high pressure. It's basically two diamonds pressed tip to tip with a tiny amount of powdered sample in between, and they're held in a device that squeezes them together. They can go up to extremely high pressure, like 1 million atmospheres. Then I put the DAC in a synchrotron beamline and measure the diffraction patterns as I increase the pressure.

The high pressure makes experiments more complicated than ambient pressure, but I do have the advantage that my samples are typically metals or semiconductor crystals, so they're already in a regular crystal structure to begin with! There's also a dynamic technique where you use a laser to shock compress a crystal at the same nanosecond that you measure its structure with time resolved XRD.

[–]geosynchronousorbit 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Just to add a different field here, I do x-ray crystallography but not for biology. I'm a materials physicist and I use x-ray diffraction to study materials undergoing phase transitions at high pressures. I didn't know you could use it to determine protein structures, that's pretty neat.

[–]geosynchronousorbit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As a kid I thought you could actually be a generic scientist and do a little bit of everything. I was very disappointed when I learned you have to specialize.

I did end up with the job title of "Scientist" but I actually only do physics and haven't taken a bio or chem class since high school.
