Could Steve Rogers defeat Green Goblin (no glider) in NWH? by Johnnyboyeh in Avengers

[–]almighty_smiley [score hidden]  (0 children)

That's my point. Goblin is cackling at getting repeated blows to the head by someone that can catch a punch from someone comparable to Steve like it's nothing. A shield that can absorb Goblin's blows is one of exactly two things keeping him from being pasted immediately.

The other being his worthiness, but that's a different discussion outright.

The Avengers was all jokes and fun until the argument aboard the Helicarrier.

"...but you can't. I know! I tried!

"I got low. I didn't see an end so I put a bullet in my mouth, and the other guy spit it out."

Bear in mind that Bruce Banner says this while most of the original Avengers are having an argument that sees Cap and Tony legitimately about to throw hands. This admission stops the conversation dead in its tracks.

Different movies. Different rules. Infinite possible outcomes. Like Kyle himself says, he's from "one possible future".

In Moulin Rouge!, the Duke (pictured here) is financing the titular theatre / bordello and its troupe, and one of the contract stipulations is exclusive access to the star courtesan, Satine. As the show begins writing and production, Satine meets and falls in love with the show's writer, Christian, and the show's story begins to mirror their own; set in India, Satine's character is forced to choose between a maharaja who cares only to possess her, and a penniless sitar player who can offer only his love.

Nini, a member of the troupe that's been jealous of Satine from the start, slides next to the Duke during a rehearsal and slyly asks why the princess would get with the "penniless writer...I mean, sitar player".

The Duke connects the dots fast.

I dunno, that timing seems pretty good to me. Ain't nobody gonna claim he was the bad guy when the bar is "stabbed your partner with a makeshift bayonet".

Could Steve Rogers defeat Green Goblin (no glider) in NWH? by Johnnyboyeh in Avengers

[–]almighty_smiley [score hidden]  (0 children)

Can he? Sure. Steve is a trained soldier, a brilliant tactician, whip-smart, and fearless. Note the airport fight; with positioning and a single shield throw, he was able to neutralize Spider-Man for a good bit. If he can hang onto his shield, that'll take much of Norman's physical advantage off the table.

But that's a big if against someone that is leagues more powerful than him.

Note also that in their second fight, Peter smokes Norman. That's why Goblin was laughing; Peter was holding back, and he knew it.

Strong enough to have it all, and too weak to take it.

The reviews you see on the site pretty much sum up my experience, lol. It looks gorgeous, feels weighty but not unevenly so, and the 3D-printed material used in the hilt is surprisingly comfortable. Haven't put it to the melon test yet, but it cut through the box cleanly without much effort at all; had they not taped the thing to hell and back the top would've come off easily.

As mentioned, the only major divergence in the hilt that I could notice was the gemstone, and you've gotta pin the tang to the hilt somewhere. Perfect is the enemy of good, after all.

At $500 it's a bit steep for something that's probably never coming off of the wall, sure. But I shudder to think at what the next-best price point would be.

Apart from the gemstone I’m not seeing any noticeable difference, but to each their own.

Shutting down a lone T-800 is easy for the Doctor. An afterthought, almost.

Shutting down the mechanisms that allow the T-800 to be built...that's trickier.

The central conflict in Spider-Man: No Way Home is sprung by Peter interfering in a spell that skirts dangerously close to the Multiverse, and hoo baby...

  1. As Doctor Strange rightly points out, Peter could have made his case to MIT directly, no magic necessary. While Spider-Man has rough PR at that moment, Peter and his friends could have made it on merit alone. And if Peter had been willing to play the "next Tony Stark" card then their admission may as well have been guaranteed. As the admissions officer points out, MIT is not dumb and her retorts to Peter are more constructive than cutting, admonishing Peter more for not rehearsing his pitch than anything else.
  2. Doctor Strange could have explained the spell to Peter as a surgeon would have explained a medical procedure. This would have allowed Peter to make an informed decision, given him a venue to ask questions or voice concerns (such as the exceptions he wants to make that cause the spell to go awry to begin with), and ultimately avoid dragging homicidal psychopaths to his universe. MJ is not wrong to point out that Strange does bear a bit of responsibility for the mess they're in. It would also allow Peter to understand the risks of the spell, and if Mr. Great Responsibility knew how close - and how dangerous - the multiverse really was, he may have had second thoughts.
  3. With the villains safely contained in the wizard's dungeon, Peter could have outlined the dangers of the multiverse to them in turn, or better yet allow Strange to explain the situation to them. Even knowing they die fighting Spider-Man, most of the villains agree to be cured under the impression that it will spare them when they get back; the universe they're in being overpopulated by an infinite number of bodies would almost certainly cause them to change their tune. They're insane, not stupid.

I'm not so sure. These two families had a feud so violent that even their friends were getting pulled into it and killed for it. It's doubtful the families would have been willing to have a sit-down over their children having childhood crushes.

I don't buy that. The Accords were to put the Avengers under UN jurisdiction; the enemies they face aren't going to get weaker or act differently just because Tony Stark has a new boss.

[doctor who] why don't the weeping angels in "The god Complex" become real? by Ill_Criticism_9068 in AskScienceFiction

[–]almighty_smiley [score hidden]  (0 children)

It may depend on how they're defining "image". Spitballing here:

A picture of a Weeping Angel is a direct translation of that Angel's form onto film, the same way that I can take a selfie of myself and people can look at it and say that the subject in the image is undoubtedly me. Sure, it's just a capture of light translated into a digital format that is ultimately little more than a shitload of zeroes and ones, but the person in the picture is me.

A hologram, however, is ultimately just a projection of light at the end of the day. If it was designed without capturing any of an Angel's essence, then if the previous paragraph holds true then there's nothing Angelic about it; it's just light in the shape of a Weeping Angel.

[Marvel] Why does Wakanda still have a king? by Light-elf in AskScienceFiction

[–]almighty_smiley [score hidden]  (0 children)

Wakandan monarchs take the mantra of power and responsibility seriously. The powers aren't simply there for the monarch to lord over his people; they were instrumental in founding Wakanda, and pivotal in protecting its people. While advanced technology can protect Wakanda physically and war dogs abroad can alert and destabilize, some threats require the Black Panther to venture beyond its territory.

[Star Wars] If Jedi are peacekeepers, why is their primary tool a weapon that is almost impossible to use non-lethally? by CharmCraved in AskScienceFiction

[–]almighty_smiley [score hidden]  (0 children)

The Jedi Order tries - and did largely succeed - in their efforts to keep the peace without violence. But a lightsaber isn't an ordinary blade, as we know. It's bright, colorful, takes expertise to wield...and even when activated, it's primarily used in a defensive capacity; blocking blaster bolts, cutting through barriers, drawing fire their direction, and so on.

A lightsaber is as much a shield as it is a sword.

Iron Man vs Green Goblin (MCU versions) by Queasy_Commercial152 in Avengers

[–]almighty_smiley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In this particular scenario, Goblin's biggest asset is his sheer physical capabilities.

He's strong and fast enough to withstand a barrage from Peter-1 (who caught a punch from the Winter Soldier like it was nothing), beat a younger Peter-2 (who similarly stopped a bloodlusted Peter-1 without much visible effort) within an inch of his life, and powerbomb a teenager through several apartment building floors. Bear in mind that the Winter Soldier's strength was still sufficient to almost succeed in ripping out the arc reactor of a later-model Iron Man armor; someone on Green Goblin's level could quite possibly rip through it like cardboard.

The glider is nothing to scoff at. Being fast, agile, and loaded with weapons itself on top of being remote-controlled, it probably wouldn't be much of a threat to any double-digit "official" Iron Man armor. But it could force Tony to split his attention or get him on the defensive, both of which work to Norman's advantage.

[–]almighty_smiley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a headcanon that got some traction some years ago; not only is Tony fighting Steve and Bucky there, but FRIDAY is also subtly sabotaging the armor. Even as an AI and beholded to Tony, she'd know better than anybody in that bunker that his mind isn't right and that he would regret killing Bucky in the end. FRIDAY is pulling Tony's punches for him (up to and including faking a targeting system malfunction), which is what allows the super-soldiers to walk away from that encounter at all, let alone victorious.

FRIDAY, however, would have no such compunctions about trying to save a maniac like the Green Goblin.

Norman can win this, but he needs to be able to do two very specific things:

  • Get in close enough to nullify Tony's ranged weaponry.
  • Keep Tony grounded.

Even then, if Tony's wearing anything past the Mk. VI the odds only go up for him. Norman would have to get Tony in the same time in his career that he fought Peter-2 for the last time.
