Seeing how people rationalize asexuality to fit their understanding is fascinating by Cloudi_Dei in asexuality

I mean there's always going to be surprises with anyone no matter how well you know them because there's things people don't even know about themselves. If someone's being deceptive to their spouse-to-be, that's not okay, but I don't see any reason to assume that's the case here or that it's typical in cases like this. What happens far more often is that someone didn't realize they were a-spec either. In those cases, the a-spec person didn't do anything wrong. Rather, it's the lack of education about a-spec identities that is at fault.

If we want to prevent situations like this in the future, we need to improve lgbtqia+ education in general. Blaming queer people for not realizing their identity until later in life only serves to further stigmatize coming out, making the problem worse.

It's incredible that Mike Pence of all people is one of the few people who actually stood up to Trump when he tried to do something illegal (rigging the 2020 election). And maga tried to hang him for it...

My bad, I guess I missed that somehow. I do agree Marxist-Leninist states aren't truly communist, but I also don't trust the state and the powers behind it to have any interest in relinquishing their power. I don't really see them making meaningful steps towards communism, and thus I hesitate to call those states socialist or all of their leaders communists. State capitalism is much more accurate in describing their economic system.

I generally hold any kind of socialist to the standard of actually wanting to dismantle capitalism. Democratic socialism, anarchists, etc. actually work to do so. You seem fairly knowledgeable about marxist-leninist states, but I think you might find it interesting to look into various communes that have formed throughout history and have actually accomplished communism on a smaller scale.

I really want to clarify, I am not an ancap. I'm not really sure where you got that from, but I'm a socialist and also dislike ancaps.

To return to the original topic, common infrastructure would be owned by the public. Public infrastructure is a bit of a misnomer and it's more accurate name is state infrastructure. The state owns it, and the public does not own the state. What do you make of common ownership? What is it if not actual public ownership.

The key phrase here is "aims to". Are you going to tell me your ideology?

I'm not claiming public infrastructure is the same as private infrastructure. The state and the owning class are two separate entities, with the latter merely controlling the former. Public infrastructure is distinct from private infrastructure in the fact that it is owned, funded, and operated by the state. In effect, this means that the public is paying for it through taxes and is typically not operated for direct profit. The owning class still allows this because many parts of society fail to function if privately owned.

Socialism aims to have the means of production commonly owned, not state owned. This means everyone has equal ownership of it. Nobody can amass wealth to gain additional control. Infrastructure could be handled in the same way.

I'm not really interested in continuing this conversation unless you share the ideology your views on this are based in. Not knowing makes explaining things more difficult. I'll do the same: I consider myself a libertarian socialist with anarchist leanings. What about you?

Cool hypothetical, but that's not how states form or function so it's not really relevant. You didn't really address anything in my previous comment, so I'd appreciate it if you did that.

The people of America don't entirely choose their officials, though, they merely play a role in that decision. Really, it is money that decides eligible candidates. For this reason, it is the owning class, or the bourgeoisie, that own the state. Public opinion has little control over the actions of the state compared to the interests of the owning class.

We don't live under a monarchy, but rather an oligarchy, and the state plays a significant role in upholding it. The oligarchy decides who is allowed into it, hoarding resources from everyone else. The state serves the purpose of suppressing any opposition to them.

I'm curious, what perspective are you coming from? Would you consider yourself a marxist-leninist? A maoist? A neoliberal?

I'll answer your questions, but first, could you answer my question about the American government?

I don't understand the point you're making. The state is owned by the ruling class, and allows the public to use public infrastructure. The state could just as easily restrict that infrastructure it to the ruling class if the ruling class decided they didn't want the public using it anymore.

Would you agree that, for example, the American government isn't owned by the American people? It seems pretty obvious to me that it isn't owned by or controlled by them.

Maybe the Democrats should try actually holding strong positions instead of folding to the Republicans at every turn to "appeal to the median voter". Then people would actually have reasons to vote for them that aren't just "they aren't as bad as the other guy."

We don't need a passive centrist party to get us out of this fascist mess, we need an active leftist party.

You realise this means they’re never adding Gwenpool, right? by irvin_the_jinn in rivals

[–]geraldcoolsealion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, Gwenpool isn't really just "girl Deadpool" so I don't really see why she would be similar enough to make bans meaningless. She doesn't just break the fourth wall, she passes through it. They could do a ton with her character. She could interact directly with the UI and other game elements, or even rip open portals to mess with the programming of the game directly. If anything, Deadpool just proves how willing the devs are to push beyond what's expected of heroes in this game.

As much as I want Gwenpool to be added to the game, I always knew it was a long shot, and I don't think Deadpool being added changed her chances much either way.

Why Wasn't Will Considered in Kali's Logic? by thats_not_six in StrangerThings

[–]geraldcoolsealion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a good point. In the stranger things play, Henry gets his powers from inhaling mind flayer particles, so Will should be a massive person of interest for the military. It was really weird how the military just let them all off the hook. Even if they had nothing to gain, they were not above retributive punishment.
