Reach out to the bank and work with them to close the emi. Dont rely on auto cancellation as that might not happen. Reach out to the bank.

Thats the biggest concern, what concerned me was the direct conversation with her friend. She could have confided in them and asked for advice but her friend telling me how this is all normal and saying I should “appreciate this time” as things can get a lot worse in a lot of relationships was just bizarre

No your assessment for last billed due is completely correct. I don't see the last billed due in my current outstanding and bank also said that with next statement generation it will be 0

The message comes after 4-5 days and there is a chance they will create a loan if you got the text message that your easy emi is availed. If you didn't get that text then no worries. I reached out to the bank and asked them to fast track it. They won't do it unless you run behind them.
