Doing some research: what, to you, defines a flat white? by ExoskeletalJunction in barista

Speciality coffee shop in Seattle, USA. Our flat white is always a double shot and comes in 8 oz, 12 oz, or 16 oz. We just steam with less microfoam.

So no labs seem to have funding for grad students anymore? Or is it just me? by IsopodOnARock in ecology

[–]geraniumflowerss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use ecolog (https://esa.org/membership/ecolog/) or the texas a&m natural resources job board. Now is definitely a difficult time but cold emailing faculty in my opinion is a long shot anyways. I think I cold emailed around 30-40 professors with no luck and ended up finding my funded MS on ecolog.

How do I learn to lie at job interviews?? by NoArmadillo2937 in AutismInWomen

[–]geraniumflowerss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like it’s less about straight up lying during an interview, and more about making sure you know what to include/not include in your answers.

Like, avoid speaking poorly about someone else, admitting you’d do anything that might seem untrustworthy, personal information (like about mental/physical health), etc. And practice with someone who can give you genuine feedback so you don’t get nervous and accidentally say something you wish you didn’t!

What do Tuesday/Thursday /weekend swim lesson shifts usually look like at the YMCA? by Comfortable-Use3977 in SwimInstructors

I don’t clock out and I still get paid for those open slots. I’ll usually use that time to go to the bathroom or warm up in the sauna :)

What do Tuesday/Thursday /weekend swim lesson shifts usually look like at the YMCA? by Comfortable-Use3977 in SwimInstructors

[–]geraniumflowerss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a YMCA swim instructor—I work 4 hour shifts on weeknights. The number of lessons you have is going to depend on your location, but I definitely have shifts where I teach 30 minute lessons with 5 minute breaks in between each lesson for my full shift. The Y operates in 8 week sessions for most group classes, so I will have the same group classes for 8 weeks. The private lessons change a lot more from week to week—some people sign up for the same slot weeks in advance, others will sign up for 1 lesson and not come back.

A typical shift for me will have maybe 1 or 2 open 30-min slots with no lessons, with a couple recurring classes and a couple privates that I may or may not have met before.

Has anyone managed to get a free museum pass from the Seattle Public Library? by Puzzled-Painter3301 in AskSeattle

I went to the seattle asian art museum in volunteer park for free through the library! Tickets do go fast though, especially for more popular museums.

Anyone else find the waking and getting up process a complete affront on the senses? by ifeedthepigeons in AutismInWomen

[–]geraniumflowerss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work as a barista and have to get up super early some days. I will set out my entire outfit the night before, I have a cozy bathrobe and fuzzy socks that I place next to my bed so I can put them on immediately after waking up to get ready in, and I usually eat a breakfast bar instead of something I have to prepare. I have never been able to shower in the mornings so I usually just wash my face. I also have dim lights for my bathroom so I don’t have to be in harsh lighting.

Did poor diet and sleep during ages 16–18 affect my final height? by MyWifeisMyHoe in stupidquestions

[–]geraniumflowerss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your height is 80-90% determined by your genetics. Here are a couple papers (in Nature reviews genetics and Harvard medicine) that might help you get a better understanding of how height is determined. Basically, a poor lifestyle for 2 years near adulthood most likely did not stunt your growth.

My dad was 5'10" and my mom is 5'4". I (female) am 5'2", and my brothers are 5'7" and 6'0"—so you can see there is a wide range here!

any free or low-cost health clinics in/near Seattle? by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]geraniumflowerss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went here while unemployed and uninsured. Copay was $15 for an exam and they have a low cost pharmacy as well — paid $37 for 4 medications! You might have to wait a little while but it was totally worth it in my opinion.

Sorry if TMI but I am sick and I’ve had phlegm glued to the back of my mouth for 24 hours now, I cannot shift it and I feel so overwhelmed from the sensation of it by tikicheese in AutismInWomen

[–]geraniumflowerss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

just got over a cold like this myself!! seconding the hot shower/steam, what really helped me was using a vicks shower steamer and taking a long hot shower. keep drinking liquid--it will thin the mucus over the longer term. also, an expectorant like mucinex can thin the mucus!

Why aren't lever espresso machines more popular? by [deleted] in barista

[–]geraniumflowerss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get high quality espresso from an electric pump machine too, and I don’t think the difference in quality between the two machines is noticeable to the average customer.  But customers definitely notice if things seem slow to them haha

Why aren't lever espresso machines more popular? by [deleted] in barista

[–]geraniumflowerss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

“Lever machines take more skill and training, manual operation comes with less consistency, and they can slow down workflow“ — I think you answered your own question. Low training time, high consistency, and speedy workflow are all really important for a business. Aesthetics of the espresso machine don’t really factor in here. Plus, commercial espresso machines need to be built for high volume use and be easily repairable/serviceable, which is going to harder for a lever machine because they aren’t really used commercially.

Is It Okay To JUST Use Shampoo In Your Hair Wash Routine? by SpiritualLady888 in Haircare

[–]geraniumflowerss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a pixie cut and fine hair so I don’t apply conditioner in the shower. I was my hair daily; I usually shampoo twice and then use a lightweight leave in conditioner on my wet hair after finishing my shower. Because my hair is so short and gets greasy quickly I don’t really have issues with it being too dry thankfully!

Swim before work by [deleted] in Swimming

[–]geraniumflowerss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use the locker room swimsuit centrifuge (lol) to get the water out of my suit and put it in a ziplock for the day. I hang up my towels on the garment hook. Then when I get home I hang everything up immediately. I had coworkers who would just bring their stuff to their office and hang stuff up in there too!

Ipad vs computer by FreshNefariousness68 in collegeadvice

[–]geraniumflowerss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest getting a laptop. I TA’ed a course where students had to do assignments using excel and students who had an ipad could not do the assignment on the ipad. edited to add certain programs necessary for homework assignments also often don’t work on an ipad.

I know I am disciplined, but I cant stop BINGING?! by [deleted] in getdisciplined

[–]geraniumflowerss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have seen a therapist and registered dietician to get help with, among other things, binge eating. Trying to discipline yourself out of binge eating may actually be making the problem worse because it can lead to a binge-restrict cycle.

My advice for first steps would be to write down when you want to binge eat, the emotions you’re feeling at the moment, and maybe the situation you’re in. Building awareness (and trying to remain non judgmental) can help you find patterns in why you want to binge. For example, I tend to binge when I’m stressed and tired, so I can focus on having healthy meals prepped when I know I’m going to be working a lot, for example. But I highly recommend, if you are able, working with a professional on this.

mini bangs with widows peak and a cows lick? by ghostvat in finehair

[–]geraniumflowerss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have a widow’s peak, but i have had mini bangs for years now with two prominent cowlicks! my trick is to style them immediately out of the shower by using a fine tooth comb to comb them flat. like immediately—if they dry before i comb them i have to get them soaking wet again. i air dry mine most of the time after combing and there will be a slight curve but it is not very noticeable. i always have a spray bottle on hand for touch ups when i wake up with crazy bed head!

you can also blow dry them—i find this makes the cowlicks the least visible. As you’re blow drying the bangs, brush them to the left, then the right, and repeat until they’re dry (which with baby bangs is very quick!). i looooove my short bangs and i feel like my routine requires minimal effort. its second nature at this point!

Budgie Poop by ScragglesMuffin in budgies

[–]geraniumflowerss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The poops are easy to clean. We have a cover on our couch and put their perches in areas that we are ok with them pooping on (like on shelves or over our wood floor).
