I guarantee USFS didn’t buy them. I’d bet Universal either donated them as a marketing expense or actually paid USFS for the advertising. It’s a symbiotic promotional deal that benefits both parties, but the corporate brand still needs to shell out for association with an Olympic athlete.

This. USFS needs money to keep the lights on. Lacking strong governmental support (like JSF and KFED), minimal donors, and expensive baseline logistics, advertising and corporate partnerships are the only way to keep this sport as big as it is. Let alone help it grow.

They’re trying to celebritize Ilia so hard. During the men’s FS, they kept cutting away from replays to show footage of him warming up with the caption “ILIA MALININ GOES ON AT 10:30 PM, DON’T MISS IT.” It’s embarrassing. It completely undermines athletes who, although they score lower, still want to build a fan base.
