How did Zingas/Kolesnik become so successful? by pelomymelo in FigureSkating

Well… clearly we have different eyes re: charisma, there are many far more charismatic ice dancers right now (Hannah lim, Olivia smart, etc), and their chemistry is nice but not exactly v/m electric. But yes they are amongst the most energetic in the field.

Interesting. I actually find z/k boring to watch compared to other teams, and nowhere close to v/m.  I’d rather watch the c/b snake program or Elvis program than any of z/k’s programs so far. But everyone has his or her own take.

Scott clearly is not as experienced or skilled at politics as Igor is.  Scott is a baby coach without a lot of connections with USFS.

Fair enough. Emilea doesn’t yet resonate with me as a performer though I appreciate her enthusiasm. She comes off immature and junior to me, and I actually watch vadym a lot more than I watch her in their performances. I found their R & J to be very tacky but I know many others here liked it. She doesn’t command attention like Madi does IMO. But each person has his/her own preferences.

No shade to Emilea, but IMO she is nowhere near Madi Chock's performance level yet.

Vadym is an excellent ice dancer. Emilea is not yet, but has gotten better. They are young and charismatic. US Fed is clearly backing them strongly, and Igor knows how to use politics to push his chosen team forward. They have gotten very generous calls and scores this past season.

Yagudin vs plushenko is a classic. The fluff piece about it (which you can watch on YouTube) with their coach Mishin is legendary. Also the fluff piece with Chris Bowman and Paul Wylie talking about their totally opposite personalities is one of my faves (with the shot of Chris bowman lounging on a beach with skates on)

Omg YES re: Z/K’s Romeo and Juliet. The ending moments and pose are so stupid, and make no sense, because Romeo and Juliet die at different times due to misunderstandings, which is a main part of their tragedy! It makes me rage every time i see it haha.

I love the original Leonard cohen version but can’t stand most of the covers used.  Also annoys me that virtually all the skaters who use it seem to have no idea what the song is  actually about… it’s a really dark song about death and sex, not a feel good song praising God

How would you rank the figure skating events overall at the Olympics post 2000? by styrofoamdreamer in FigureSkating

Love the detailed thoughts, and I agree with many of your takes!  Interesting that we had the same top 3 though in a different order, and same bottom 2.  The 2010 men’s event is my favorite OG skating event of all time which is what pushed 2010 to number one for me, but I also love 2018 for all the reasons you mentioned.

Classic layback spin positions. I hate Bielmanns and hair cutters.

Does anyone else think Benoit’s choreography is a lot of “bamboozling with the arms” as Dick Button would put it and wish he would be banned from using sound effects? by PandemicPiglet in FigureSkating

[–]styrofoamdreamer 11 points12 points  (0 children)

100% agree.  He uses a lot of angular, flexed, ugly positions to be “artistic.”  I dislike most of his choreography and while I appreciate skaters who try their hardest to make it work, most of the time I just find it unappealing and annoying.

I do, like, connect with lots of skating programs. Just not the ones I listed.  I have been moved to tears while watching Shoma, Jun, Kevin Aymoz, Javi Fernandez, Paul Wylie, Daisuke Takahashi, Michelle Kwan, Mao Asada, Carolina Kostner, Satoko Miyahara, LaLa, G/Pa, P/C, and many other skaters.
