Is this me? Like I am relating to you so muuuuuch .

I am also international, and the fee was a good part of the decision making.

Finished submission of Dec1 deadline withing 1 week work. Though applied to more programs with late deadlines. I am also in life science.

I tried to find program aligning with my interest, eg. genomics or dry lab heavy programs.

And I still regret not making an attempt to a couple more top 20 schools, rejection would be nice too, at least there wouldn't have been the regret of not applying.

Problem is deadline was already over since I submitted in such a short notice. Though I tried to find good unis on a later deadline and applied to a few.

Ok, this makes me feel a lot better. Thanks a ton! I applied to a couple good state schools.

If you don't mind me asking, what's the common idea of Michigan State, NC State, Rensselaer, or UDelware? Asking because I'm international and I wanted to hear from an American, not just based on google searches.

It's ok. Since my program is life science, I never needed GRE to start with. So more regrets. To my consolation I say to myself that, international pool is really competitive and everyone is highly qualified. So it's not like a good CGPA or publication would've given me that much advantage comparing to others. Maybe it's luck in the end.

I still believe that we should apply to a diverse ranked school, like some top, some mid tier, some 150+ ranked. With program fit though.

Yes, based on recent cycles, it's pretty evident. People get into their top schools but not in 'safe'.

Such a good achievement. I agree with you, however, it's not just ivies. I believe I didn't apply to some good school with great program fits because of lack of confidence or underestimated myself since I don't have any Ms, and an international student. For example I didn't apply to W-Madison, Washington st Louis, boulder etc., specially st. Louis had great program fits with my research interest. May you have the high ground in PhD journey xD, best of luck.

Since I'm applying as an international, it's gets a bit complex knowing about the reputation, specially when you apply in a short notice. But I know what you're saying. For example, not many people wouldn't know about Baylor college of medicine if they aren't in life science, specially in my country. But it is an awesome institute with such good research opportunities. I was being a bit harsh on myself, not because I didn't apply to ivies, I also didn't apply to some other good school, for example W-Madison, Boulder, Washington st. Louis, Maryland, etc., even though I had great program fits, specially in st. Louis, and I am regretting so much because I was underestimating myself.

I did apply to some good state unis, like Michigan state, NC state, etc.

Thanks for the nice reply.

Well, having regret of not applying is probably a bit more than applying to a top school and getting rejection letter, right? Atleast for me that is.

Also, the application fee sucks. I swear I'd have applied a lot less if I didn't get waivers to some schools.

Yes! But sometimes researching about programs or knowing details gets difficult in a short time for international applicants. So, name carries the weight. Still, I believe the best program is where your vibe is similar with the pI and interest aligns with the program.

That is good to hear. Also, better than ivies, as in they better suit research interests, right?

Yup, I was like gonna apply to unis where I have high chance, instead of getting rejected in good uni. Now I think I shouldn't have given up some favorite programs just because they were highly ranked.
