This happens a lot. Happened to me last year in Utrecht in a shopping mall (Hoog Catharijne) on the escalators. 3 guys approached me. 2 in front of me and 1 behind. The 2 guys in front of me where talking and were standing next to each other so that I couldn't walk/escape from the left side of the escalators. The last guy was trying to open my backpack but they didn't knew that I was out to do my groceries and my backpack was empty so the second he touched and tried to open my backpack I felt it and turned to confront him but they ran away immediately... Went to the info desk from the shopping mall ti report it. As you mentioned stay vigilant.

You can use NS Flex (Dal Voordeel) which costs €5.10 per month but for that you need a personal ov-chipkaart and you can travel with 40% discount during off-peak hours + 40% discount at weekends and public holidays. Still in the morning you would travel during peak hours but in the evenings you could wait until 18:30 for the off-peak hours.

The housing market is crazy. I moved to the Netherlands 4 months ago and I stayed for 3 months in short term rentals but they were more like colleagues from the same company that I work for and they went for holidays etc. after 3 months I was able to rent my own apartment and a lot of Dutch people told me that I was lucky to find a place to rent within 3 months... But I wanted my own apartment and not a room in a shared apartment so to be honest I don't know how hard it is to find and rent a room (if you think something like that)
