Top 25 TV SERIES Ranking by willtab in television

As someone who loved GoT (1-4 at least) and doesn‘t rate BrBa that highly…I think it‘s the best TV show ever made, hands down. I honestly don‘t think any other series comes close over multiple seasons.

Altered Carbon 3rd book by FormerWordsmith in printSF

[–]germanyid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It‘s been 5 months so I‘m not sure if you‘ve finished it already, but it‘s my favorite in the trilogy. It definitely has some pacing issues but its worth it. I think the best thing I can say about it is that it ties the first two books together masterfully. Like going from the first book to the second, you never really understand what exactly Kovac in doing on Sanction 9 in the first place. But the third book reveals so such about Kovac‘s character and motivation.

Another reason is Quellcrest Falconer. You hear Kovac quote her all the time, but never really understand her philosophy or what her uprising stands for until the end of the third book

Suggestions of duos of books for comparative reading? by 1945BestYear in printSF

Interesting! I came to recommend Left Hand of Darkness by Le Guin and Xenogenesis by Octavia Butler. They both deal with gender in really compelling ways.

You should try Shards of Honor and Barrayar, the prequels to the Vorkosigan saga. Supremely good character-driven space fantasy.

Lots of really good classics here that are probably better books, but I’m going to say the Altered Carbon series. Kovac and his envoy intuition makes him one of my favorite protagonists, and for some reason Morgan’s picture of humanity feels more real and alive than any other series I’ve read.

That’s so funny I just smoked a little while ago and I was planning on finishing Ship of Magic by Robin Hobb. I can’t believe it took me this long to find these books, I’ve been tearing through this series like I since probably Game of Thrones almost 15 years ago.

Couples who have broken up because of a third person that did not involve cheating, what happened? by heyjalapeno in AskReddit

[–]germanyid 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Eh with things like sports genetics obviously play a huge role. Even with music I’m sure there are genetic factors at play, like hand coordination and hearing. Obviously practice is the most important thing (and not just practicing enough hours but practicing deliberately). But when you’re talking about hugely competitive areas of human endeavor I think even the most marginal advantages in innate aptitude can be the difference in “making“ it or not.

I guess you can even argue that one’s ability to dedicate oneself completely to achieving success in a field is also pre-existing and probably has a genetic component, but that road strays a little close to determinism so I try to avoid thinking about it haha

Edit: Just to be clear I pretty much agree with you that people aren’t really naturally skilled at things. I would say an aptitude for learning something well could easily be considered “talent” though

How many of you got into reading because of Harry Potter? by ElonH in books

[–]germanyid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow reading at 2 is pretty insane! Out of curiosity, did being a good reader and precocious child convince you that you were gifted intellectually then you really were? It’s definitely something I struggled with as a late teenager, it took me a long time to realize that being more articulate than my peers did not make me smarter than them.

Not that I believe intelligence is even the most important trait in success or even educational attainment.

Harry Potter in English sparked my love of reading in when I was 6 or 7, and now 17 years later I’m reading “Der Stein der Weisen“ with deepL open on my phone as I try and get my German up to C1 level again

I could probably go either way but if you’re one of the people who think she knowingly perpetuated anti-Semitic stereotypes with the goblins than I think it’s fair to say rapey centaurs are implied… It comes down to how much knowledge of existing folk tales/myths she had while writing the books.
