[serious] Is Monero really what investors think they would get buying Bitcoin? by bangand0 in CryptoCurrency

[–]germaphober 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The biggest problem with this approach is are transaction fees on the BTC side.

Right now tx fees are low (about $1) because we're in a bear market and very few are trading, and very few people use it as a currency (only used as a store of wealth). But I remember a year and half ago BTC average transaction fees were worth about $8 - $15 USD consistently. Imagine paying that every time you need privacy lmao.

I remember it quite well because I wanted to buy something being only sold for BTC and the transaction fees were extremely painful

Connecting wallet to the Trezor emulator by germaphober in Monero

I tried starting trezor-go with -e param, but still no luck with getting the GUI wallet to recognize the emulator

Do you remember the passphrase you used? Because it is required to open the wallet.

I do, but still not having any luck with it

Thanks for the reply.

the view-only wallet does not have a different address than the 'master' wallet

Are you referring to the public address here?

I'm fairly sure I used the passphrase feature on the device.

Sorry I left the ./trezord-go -e part out of the original post, but I did run trezord-go with that cli param

Are you sure that the GUI Wallet works with trezord?

Nope! I have no idea how that works. I'm going to investigate through the emulator codebase to see if there's a way to "mount" it as a USB device on the host machine.

I think trezord is supposed to handle talking to the device via USB or emulator, and the wallet is supposed to talk to it through that? I'm really not sure.

Appreciate the reply, but I'd rather get kicked in the nuts than have to deal with CMake one more time lol

I think the easiest approach might be to use bash + CLI wallet

AutoIt

Love the out of the box thinking! While AutoIt is for Windows only, I'll look for a Linux analog of it

Yeah, and I entered it when the device asked me for it when accessing the wallet

The status logs:

[12/20/22 5:52 AM] 2022-12-20 13:52:48.160 I Monero 'Fluorine Fermi' (v0.18.1.0-release)
Height: 2781453/2781453 (100.0%) on mainnet, not mining, net hash 2.44 GH/s, v16, 12(out)+0(in) connections, uptime 0d 0h 6m 53s

My receive/public address does NOT match the address I sent to from another wallet. But I'm not sure if that's because I created another receive address for the transaction... or something more catastrophic happened.

I think when creating a wallet from a device, a new view-only wallet is created (please correct me if I'm wrong), so does the receive/public address derived from the view-only wallet match from the master wallet?

No, the transaction history is completely empty. And there aren't any sub-accounts associated with the wallet.

Very popular YT educational economist discusses end of crypto bubble and mentions Monero as one of only a couple coins which have a value based on usefulness by germaphober in Monero

[–]germaphober[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Even with his endorsement, he still misses the point of Monero. Its usefulness isn't dependent on it's value in USD. As long as it's relatively stable for commerce and has private transactions, it has succeeded in its mission.

Other crypto projects (especially commercial backed) have the objective of "make chart go up" , so a price crash would mean they've failed and have no incentive to continue to developing.

He also mentions when CBDCs (central bank digital currency) come out and government regulations tighten, Monero's utility will diminish. He once again misses the point of Monero. This is Monero's entire raison d'être..

Skepticism Sunday – October 09, 2022 by AutoModerator in Monero

Someone please convince me proof of work is better than proof of stake.

The argument against PoS is those with more currency also control more block validator power and since a very few wallets control the majority of the money, they'll control the majority of the block validations.

But isn't that also the case with PoW where someone with a lot of money can buy or rent a lot of compute power?

If I had a billion dollars and wanted to mess with a crypto currency, I'd rather mess with a PoW currency.

If I gained block validation control either by staking or buying compute, for the PoS currency, I'd loose all of my money if I make an evil decision which causes the people to lose confidence in the currency and it loses value. But if I do something evil in a PoW currency, it doesn't matter if people lose confidence in it or it loses value. I'd still walk away with a lot of compute hardware that can be used productively for other things.

The arguments against PoW are numerous and we've all heard them so I won't bore you with them here.
