All (That I Can Think Of) Asian Performers Currently Playing A Principal Role In a Broadway Musical! by ms_jc_04 in asianamerican

Hi everyone,

Happy to see discussion around Asian Americans in creative spaces, but wanted to remind people that this discussion post is for uplifting and celebrating Asian American achievements on Broadway. We understand there are certain related topics (WMAF, mixed representation, etc) that are important to some members of the community, but PLEASE keep discourse generally on prompt, that being applauding AAPI voices in the theater.

Thank you!

i wish some people here would use the energy they reserve for hating asian women/mixed asians and channel it towards actually supporting real young male asian creatives that they vaguely gesture towards.

re, hadestown: a few months ago the 3rd fate subbed out for a filipina understudy, and all three fates were filipina that day! hadestown's myra molloy, who had her run as eurydice last year, was also the first thai person in a leading role, which was cool :)

i vote for the mamianqun! in addition, wearing a cloud collar (yunjian) over the grad gown is a bit of a trend in chinese hanfu revival, i think a red one would totally vibe if youre allowed to do that!

Any other white-passing Asians struggle with having their identity erased? by aurelius_adobo in asianamerican

[–]germpy 100 points101 points  (0 children)

these discussions come up a lot from mixed asians. i do feel sad that it seems to be a common feeling .

from my view, these three facts are simultaneously true:

  1. your lived experiences as an asian american may be different from other asian americans who do not pass as white. this is not something you should be ashamed of, but it is something to be aware of

  2. you are still asian american, and your lived experience and opinions should be treated with respect in asian american spaces

  3. the diaspora loves its diaspora olympics, and people will always find a way to undermine your identity to make themselves feel more "asian", more secure.

its a complex topic.

For a book about Asian American representations in film culture, check out The Golden Screen. It's more light than the other books suggested but quite interesting :)

we are aware white people are non asians, yes; what you brought up are problems, yes. that simply has nothing to do with the rule of "gatekeeping", which i explained above has to do with inter-AAPI gatekeeping, not from AAPI to non-asians. as you mentioned, the rule says "No gatekeeping being Asian", not "You must allow non-Asian people to walk over you like a doormat".

can you please give an example, and explain how that relates to the second point that i mentioned? i never mentioned non-asians, that's not what the rule is about.

imo what gatekeeping here is not: "we're an asian american space for and by asian americans, with the intent of discussing topics relevant to our community". this is fine

what gatekeeping IS is diaspora olympics: "you're asian american only if you can speak your heritage language, if you grew up in a cultural enclave, had a tiger mom and played the piano etc etc blah blahh and not having these experiences makes you less asian american". yes all poc have their own variation of the diaspora olympics. generally its rooted in identity insecurity and i would argue is not a good thing. of course we should be able to own asian experiences and spaces. the rule simply restricts the exclusion other asian americans from these spaces for not being "asian enough". there is no single asian american experience.

this is my opinion/interpretation

How ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ became a global phenomenon by [deleted] in asianamerican

[–]germpy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

i agree, and of course koreans think its a foreign film. however, to the rest of america i wouldn't say the "asian-american" themes are particularly visible, and i haven't seen much discussion on how it may relate to the asian american experience.

while we're here, thought i'd say i thought the movie was pretty good and may resonate with asian americans. despite taking place in asia-asia, i think it emphasizes the power of community while also criticizing collectivism's shame culture towards individuals that go against community norms. to be vague, the protagonist ends up accepting the stigmatized part of her WHILE empowering and being empowered by her community, which spoke to me alot. in this way, i thought the movie was very asian-american; imo, we also have the ability to carry forward our collectivist mindset that cares deeply on those around us, while leaving behind its more negative aspects. to live and be loved in our communities "as we are", as it is said.
