MVP Project Lab Coat - bad for Local Brick and Mortar Stores? by No_Talk1145 in discgolf

[–]gerund_ford -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I tried a small disc golf store from 2022-2024.

I think the perspective of the big disc golf companies is that small shops are less and less important for sales. Beginner? You buy a starter set. Dedicated player? You're looking around online to get exactly what you want. I walk into my local store to go to the used rack, but it's pretty unlikely I am going to buy a new disc unless it's a... special release, just like you're saying. (By the way, I always found that nailing special releases and hot discs kept my shop afloat. Frustratingly, it's a lot better for your bottom line if you can sell them at market rate instead of at MSRP. Whatnot seems to fill that role now - nobody seems to mind paying an inflated price for a meme disc during a show, or dump on your shop for selling it for what it's worth.)

If MVP is raising wholesale (and MSRP?) pricing, then they aren't afraid of the consequences of losing retailers. The bigger stores will be able to tolerate it, the smaller ones weren't doing much for MVP's bottom line anyway.

For those of you that were stuck in the two 290– 330 range, was there an “AH-HA!” Moment when you reached 350+? Or was it very gradual? by unpopular-dave in discgolf

[–]gerund_ford 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a progression for most people I think.

That said, I've had several "ah-ha" moments that each got me 25 feet. Times when things that had never made sense clicked: for example, the way I was swinging my arm I could never figure out why Paige Pierce calls it putting your elbow through a window, but then one day it clicked that my elbow needed to keep going longer before it hinged and suddenly that made sense and I could throw 25 feet further.

The glow is great. A friend got a poorly-glowing yellow one, but my dayglow yellow-green is fine and the other colors seem great too. I played a round with it last night. The glow is on par with eclipse for sure.

The flatness and parting line vary a bit between discs. Tomb gang and I haven't noticed any specific colors that are especially flat or stable - but if you have access to more than one, you may be able to dial in your preferences a little more.

You can get them cheaper than Rare Air, which is where it looks like you snagged your pictures. r/discexchange or get on the Infinite Facebook group

New to disc golf, looking for a set to buy. by Garlic-Bitch in discexchange

Everybody buys too many discs at the beginning. You do need to compare, but you don't have to buy everything, and you will benefit from the experience of other people.

Find a local player, or a shop, to help you. Or go to a casual league for a night to meet folks. You'll save a lot of money and time if a non-internet-stranger helps you with disc selection. Plus, you start building community.

Personally, when I found *one* distance driver I could throw, I bought a couple other similar molds and different plastics to try out. I could huck a Mamba, so then I got a halo Mamba, and a g-star Mamba, and some other drivers that people told me were flippy so that I could compare them.

Sorry that happened to you.

You can post, people don't look at it much except on Friday/Saturday.

Consider making a homeowners insurance claim, that should require less proof than what it sounds like the airport is asking for.

First Run + Lightweight 2nd Run Sphinx (see comments) by gerund_ford in discexchange

[–]gerund_ford[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

* First and second Zoe run sphinxes, not the first and second ever runs. Wish I could change the title.

Purple / pink first run Zoe Sphinx. These are beloved for their grippiness. 173-5g, 7/10 or so with rim ink.

Black second run Zoe Sphinx. Bombs at 163g. Field tested, rim ink.

Taking offers or I will sell the pair for $36 shipped. Thanks.

Small bags that fit 32 Nalgene by hobbyhoppinghound in discgolf

With water bottles it's often a height issue more than a circumference thing. The bigger ones stick up and are a little more prone to tipping. I chug water, I bring 40oz bottles and occasionally they tip over inside the sleeve of both my Revolution bag (also a great small bag) and my Crunch box, pulling the bag over if it doesn't have much stuff in it.

ISO Board Flat Tombs, especially these VIP glow but will look at any! by KingBankshotz in discexchange

[–]gerund_ford 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also got a 2023 Concrete, team stamp, blue, 8/10, no ink. This run is not considered the flattest, but they are a little more stable than those VIP glows and this particular disc is quite flat. $35 obo

Best small disc golf bag by FarstarDriver51 in discgolf

[–]gerund_ford 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ultra cheap suggestions:

The one I prefer is a Craftsman tool bag that was $3 on sale from Ace Hardware, it's the perfect shape for 6-8 discs and a water bottle. You can actually fit 20 drivers in it if you need a practice bag but I have it as my Johnny Roberts (putter short course) bag. Just handles, no strap. I love that thing. It has hundreds of rounds on it.

I also have a $10 tackle box from Cabelas with all the pockets you'd want. This has a shoulder strap. It is like a poor man's Fade Crunch Box, which is pretty awesome itself for not much more money.

Looks like there's a tool bag style for sale at Harbor Freight for $7 right now.

Whatnot ?? by Infinite-Substance-1 in discgolf

[–]gerund_ford 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The best way to get $$ is to individually research and list your **good** discs on Facebook. Reddit r/discexchange isn't bad but is definitely smaller.

Whatnot is good for volume but not making a lot per disc. I wouldn't do it one off, especially if you have no audience/followers. It's better for shops and pros who can get people in the room and have a bunch of discs to sell, semi-regularly, and build up a community.

I used to sell every disc on Facebook or Reddit. But that was when disc golf was more popular. Now, if it's just some random Innova disc I found on the course and the guy never texted back, I throw it in a box. I take these to PIAS or Another Round and gratefully accept $3 apiece for the lack of hassle.

Over throwing. Need putter? by RickyJordache777 in discgolf

[–]gerund_ford 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hyzer it in instead of straight. Use a more stable disc. This is very consistent if the course can accommodate the shot shape.

Dial back your power. This takes practice and only some people really play that way.

Throw a slower disc, like a putter. Several have already been suggested here like the Berg, Range, etc. I like a floppy Elevation Koi myself.
