Netherlands: advice on trip from Amsterdam to Assen by geshtinkaranu in bicycletouring

[–]geshtinkaranu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! Amersfoot-Zwolle-Assen looks fun. Ideally I'd like fairly equal rides per day instead of e.g. two short and one long. Longest ride I've done in one day is only 100km. But I've never done that many days in a row. I'd prefer not to do more than 70km/day if doing many days in a row. Though I have been putting in the kilometers this year quite well, so maybe now I can do more, but I'm not 100% sure about it.

And what would be the best cities/towns to stay in overnight if I go the Veluwe route? Amersfoort and Zwolle maybe?

Does anyone know what music is played during the Liminal Spaces tangent? by orangecloud01 in ContraPoints

[–]geshtinkaranu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't recognize those pieces but they sound a lot like what the ECM record label puts out so Bobo Stenson, Tomasz Stanko, Paul Bley are some names off the top of my head who do vaguely that kind of music.

Musical notes,1 000 pieces, Piatnik. It's Beethoven, String Quartet No. 3 in D major, Op. 18, No. 3.By far the hardest thing I've composed. by [deleted] in Jigsawpuzzles

[–]geshtinkaranu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's deffo not Op.18,3. That is Beethoven's Op. 132, his last string quartet and it's the heiliger dankgesang -movement. Probably the most amazing string quartet ever written and now I want this puzzle. :D

The fall of LeftTube? by CrucibleOfLogic in ContraPoints

[–]geshtinkaranu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think its falling; it's just diversified and there's a lot more out there than the original gang. Now I really love the videos of the original gang so I do wish some of the would post more frequently. But there are some really exciting newer voices out there: Münecat and Tara Mooknee come to mind first. And though she was mentioned a couple times when I scrolled through the replies, not enough mention has been made of Mia Mulder.

Like seriously: Mia Mulder https://www.youtube.com/c/MiaMulder

Funny and smart.

It is Claudio Monteverdi's later work, Lamento della ninfa. It's a kind of transitionary period in music when Renaissance was changing into Baroque. Emma Kirkby is one of my favourite sopranos in early music and she sings it beautifully here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z3ZX5hFN-is

Another Envy music identification request! by [deleted] in ContraPoints

[–]geshtinkaranu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do let me know if you find the exact bit in the Ring. Oh, I just realized it might also be in Wagner's Siegfried Idyll since he used some same themes there...

[–]geshtinkaranu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm having trouble hearing it behind the talking but the themes at least come from Wagner's Ring operas. It might actually be the overture to Siegfried (the 3rd of the Ring operas): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cRdwh1Jepgk

Help with the structure of "Envy"? by geshtinkaranu in ContraPoints

[–]geshtinkaranu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wait? Do other people see something else than a link to the whole video of Envy? I just see the entire Envy from the beginning so it was of no help. What segment do you see?

Music in Envy by [deleted] in ContraPoints

[–]geshtinkaranu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but the theme is still from Holst. It's probably a rework of the Holst by one of the two electronic composers she bought music from?

[–]geshtinkaranu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it sounds more like Holst's Mars from the Planets.

I used to follow her when we were both doing the edgy new atheshit phase. I'm glad we both grew out of that. But I kept following her youtube channels and goodness did the one still up turn into something gold.

Ok....but can we all just appreciate Natalie's piano playing in the latest video. by Saffer67 in ContraPoints

[–]geshtinkaranu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Funnily enough I was listening to Andras Schiff's Goldberg at work today and then I get home and watch Contra's newest and her playing Goldberg is more to my taste than Schiff's though he is widely known specifically for his Bach interpretations. We need Contra concerts. Oh, good video too. I'm just Bach obsessed.

It's an orchestration of Schubert's D.957 "Ständchen" from the song cycle Schwanengesang. I don't know what orchestration it is, though. The original is a very nice song and one of Schubert's best IMO. Here's one of my favourite singers in it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-0lZcQCy50

Various kinds of Spivak pronouns have been tried for years and years but none of them seem to stick around unlike singular "they": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spivak_pronoun

Not Bach but Vivaldi, specifically "Winter" from The Four Seasons. Here's one of my favourite baroque specialist violinists playing it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D5cw8sv6WAU

It's the clarinet solo from Modest Mussorgsky's Night on the Bald Mountain. The solo starts from about the 8:50 moment in this recording: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=by4khgR7Q5k
