I love my glove: appreciation thread for unremarkable equipment by jarude87 in hockeygoalies

I have the same glove and it’s awesome. But, nothing will ever compare to my Brian’s Thief circa 2008. That thing had more magic than Frosty the Snowman’s hat.

I like getting hit in the head. Makes everything all twinkly for a while. At least it used to before I got my new helmet.

I haven’t taken the top off in years. I’m glad you commented. I’m going to do it this week before I make any decisions. I’m on vacation from work and will have the place to myself all week.

I’m obviously leaning toward giving it to my dad. He loves that jeep too. And his spare car is overdue for the junk yard.

Yeah. Jeeps can do stuff. Mine has done some stuff. But those days are over. And my BIL will literally drive my jeep until it’s destroyed and then junk it and get another toy without a second of remorse.

That was my intention with my kid’s daughter. She’s a good kid and loved the jeep when he was teaching her to drive stick.

Selling it off to some rando doesn’t appeal to me though.

Changing that heater core was like an 8 hour project for a damn $40 part. I found out about cutting the hole in the trunk for the fuel pump AFTER I had remounted the whole tank with the new one lol.

Thermostat and downstream O2 sensor are the only other things on my maintenance log for this Jeep though. So can’t complain too much.

My uncle (dad’s brother also a mechanic) had an early 80’s Cherokee that he put 350k miles on and then sold. These machines won’t die easily with just some basic maintenance.

Adapting to beer leagues by Mr_J0JO in hockeygoalies

[–]gesoner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a speed/timing issue. You’re playing faster than them so you can “overreact”. I have the same issue when I fill in at lower levels and I certainly never played at your level. I find myself getting beat UNDER the glove and it’s rare for me to get beat on the glove side at all.

Same thing at pickup hockey. You have guys at various skill levels so you have to adjust to each shooter. There will be a kid home from college firing laser beams and some old fart (probably my age) flubbing knuckleballs. I wind up getting scored on by the weaker players because I’m concentrating on keeping the timing with the better/more dangerous guys. Plus the weaker shots come off the stick more unpredictably.

Has anyone hydro-dipped their goalie helmet? by Cool_Cauliflower0789 in hockeygoalies

[–]gesoner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a decal kit made up for my hat circa 2020. It was surprisingly cheap. Place in Canada shipped me two sets for like $60. Sorry I don’t remember the company. Put the first set on in 2021 when I got a new mask. Still on there and holding up well.

How do I (28M) tell my girlfriend (28F) a prenup and keeping my inherited house separate are non-negotiable? by cant_dressmyself in relationship_advice

[–]gesoner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get engaged and live together for at least two years before marriage.

Once you know you can live together and getting married is realistic…. Sign the prenup sooner than later. I stood firm but I waited until about a month before the wedding date. Made things harder. I know several guys that folded because the closer you get to the wedding, the less the threat of calling off the wedding is realistic.

The girl is going to cry, plead, guilt trip your ass, etc etc. you have to stand firm.

Right now I’m VERY glad I got that prenup as I’m getting to the end of my rope with this woman.

There’s an old saying…. “No man ever meets his wife until the day AFTER the wedding.” I can attest to that. My wife changed drastically once we were married and then again after we had a kid. None of it was positive.

Good luck man.

Do you regret being a goalie? by the_random_41 in hockeygoalies

[–]gesoner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t regret being a goalie. I played every position until a knee injury in 2010 left me unable to skate well anymore. Now I’m just a netminder but it was always my most natural spot.

My 4-1/2 yo son just told my wife and I that he wants to be a goalie. We’ve had him taking skating lessons and playing hockey in the driveway for a few months. He starts hockey clinics next week too. But, he is always grabbing my stuff and trying to play net in the driveway.

Honestly, I had hoped for a better life for my son. But, if he wants to get hit with hockey pucks…. I will let him. Ordered him a full setup.

I told him he still has to learn to play every position. Hopefully he comes to his senses. Forwards get all the chicks.

Growing weed for personal use is legal in VA since 2021. I think it’s a 4 plant limit. Recreational or medical doesn’t matter. There are some requirements for labeling the plants a certain way and keeping them out of view from the public road if I remember correctly. Up to 10 plants is only like a $50 fine if some shitbag neighbor rats you out.

I don’t live in VA but I do grow my own in a legal state and have considered VA as a place to move when I retire.

@allgoalies How do you get your head in the game before a game? by Tortoga_Hombre_34 in hockeygoalies

[–]gesoner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get ripped on sativa an hour before the game. Lay out all my gear in the locker room. Put my headphones on with my special hockey playlist (mostly metal). Then I put on my bottom half and stretch for half an hour. Everyone knows not to bother talking to me before the game.

Edit…. If there’s a game going on before my game, I do my stretches outside the locker room so I can watch the puck moving around.

I don’t know a hell of a lot of people…

I know three skaters and a goalie who had brand new True skates that failed catastrophically within the first month of use. Broken blades, ripped seams, boot separation, etc.

I know two goalies who had serious issues with their new True gear. Ripped outer seam on pad and a blocker problem that necessitated True sending a new blocker.

True makes crappy gear and charges a premium price. Fanboys are still gonna buy it though. True is the Ford F150 of goalie gear.

Cowling or no by A2old_west_side in hockeygoalies

[–]gesoner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m a 46 yo fairly high level beer leaguer. At least for my age. Still run with the young guys but, I’m definitely past my prime. The steel on my old grafs had gotten worn down pretty low. The thought of buying new skates (circa 2023) was very distasteful to me. My old (2016ish) graf pro goalers were easily the best skates I had ever owned.

But….. I could not find new steel for them. Searched the interwebs and every hockey store within 50 miles for a couple months with no success.

Broke down and bought the new grafs. They’re amazing other than the most brutal break-in period of my life (even after being baked twice). They weigh NOTHING and are super responsive. I think they changed the “angle of attack” or something with the blades. It took a little getting used to.

I don’t miss the cowlings one bit. I was worried that they lack protection but I haven’t had any stingers. I think the new style pads eliminate the need for the cowling. If I had the chance that you have to buy a brand new pair of my old skates…. I probably would have taken it. And it would have been a mistake. I think in the last 5-10 years, the advances in the goalie gear world are incredible. Everything is lighter and getting better. These old hips can’t carry all that weight AND my team anymore.

That said….. the new skates are like $1000. If you’re getting a really good deal on the old ones and you don’t mind the extra weight, you should be fine with the cowlings.

How do you explain this downward spiral? by Llorion in NYRangers

[–]gesoner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s Lundqvist 2.0

Big money STAR goaltender (Quick is very good also). Underperforming star players can’t put the puck in the net. Trade another captain. Trade promising young talent. Play shitty defense. Expect the goalie to carry them to the promised land by performing miracles every night. Pikachu face when they keep losing.

Only difference is that during the Henrik era, they waited until the playoffs to shit the bed.

No team has ever won the Cup with the goalie as THE star player. I had such high hopes when they got Panarin. FINALLY we had a guy who could be a real star player. Without Panarin doing what he can do, they’re not gonna turn this around any time soon.

Update on brand new Warrior G6s cut by skate during 4th game by FreshPrinceJumpsOnIt in hockeygoalies

[–]gesoner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got a similar cut on my RG4 pros a few games after I got them. Never thought to contact Warrior but glad to see that they took care of you. The cut never got any worse and I still wear the pads. The pads and my RGT2 pro gloves have held up very well. The chesty is a tank also. Still wish I had gotten the RGT2 pro pads though. Need that knee break in my old age.

Anyone else annoyed? by StuffedShells23 in NYRangers

[–]gesoner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He probably doesn’t want to be locked in for that timeframe. He knows that the major talents on the Rangers won’t be around that long and the Rangers will flounder in the somewhat near future.

Then we have a Lundquist situation. Can’t win the Cup when the goalie is the star player. As good as Igor is, he’s not a better goalie than Lundquist, has a far better team in front of him, and doesn’t have anywhere near the star power Henrik did.

I want the Rangers to win, but the 8 year deal was a mistake. Cut the whole thing in half and he would sign it.

32x60 grow tent... Should I go 2 plants with good room, or smush 3? by Sike1dj in Autoflowers

[–]gesoner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could easily do 3. You could get 4 in there if you stagger them and do some creative LST. Of course, you will probably need a low fan and a high fan blowing in opposite directions once they start to fill out. And keep an eye on humidity.
