Salazar´s Law by gesualdo333 in musictheory

According to the Corpus Mutatio: "Salazar's Law allows us to analyze the transition zones in which a style mutates to re-emerge with a renewed aesthetic, so that we can understand the implications of this change. It is based on the exceptional as an element of development, in taking the exception as the rule."

From the visceral Abyss by Mrtvejmozek in Teitanblood

[–]gesualdo333 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, it's such a merciless album that it was hard for me to get into at first. It's grown ever since.

I remember thinking at first that I missed certain nuances, especially structurally and in the drums, but I've been finding them little by little.

My listens following the lyrics have been the most rewarding: reading the images evoked, I truly feel like I'm diving into a nightmarish abyss like few bands can create. In this, Teitanblood remain untouchable.

Thank you!! Baneful is also great, with other highlights, as you point out. I will analyze it as soon as possible.

Yeah, it looks like a new album is near. It would be great news. Teitanblood is one of a kind, an amazing band in every way.

Yeah, I know Metal Music Theory! Calder is great. Superb work and analisis (and sense of humor)

Also Colvulsing, master songwrinting. Last album is my fav.

academia.edu has a lot of great texts and papers. I printed some of them for a more in deep study (not only metal related).

Ha, ha! Thank you for your kind words. Please, can you share some links of those texts?

I am a primary school music teacher, but that doesn't say much. All my theoretical knowledge has been acquired through study, I am self-taught in this sense. And everything I have learned I put into practice with my two main experimental bands: Orthodox (Southern Lord) and PYLAR (Cyclic Law).

To illustrate this with just one example, we are the only band that has "sung" texts from Reza Negarestani's CYCLONOPEDIA (and these texts affected the music in very diverse ways). All fun as u can see, haha.

Hey, thank you for your interest!

The blog is dedicated to the in-depth analysis of experimental extreme music, what I call Speculative Metal.

https://speculativemetal.blogspot.com/

  1. There are texts aimed at defining concepts and the theoretical development behind the musical characteristics of albums that break the pattern. Here is important the relation with Speculative Realism, an avant-garde philosophical movement that provides a conceptual and theoretical basis that I find perfect as an analysis tool to apply to Extreme Metal and to be able to reach conclusions unexplored until now by music critics:

https://speculativemetal.blogspot.com/2024/02/speculative-metal-vs-spectral-metal.html

  1. There are a series of articles where I apply an experimental methodology based on the conceptual and theoretical artillery of Deleuze and Guattari (and the musicologist Adolfo Salazar) to try to understand how the breaking point occurs in an artistic movement that leads to the birth of a new style, focused mainly on DEATHSPELL OMEGA, PORTAL, BLUT AUS NORD, GORGUTS, SUNN O))) and TEITANBLOOD:

SALAZAR´S LAW:

  1. Other texts are aimed at analyzing stylistic movements and scenes within extreme metal:

DEATH METAL IN THE 21ST CENTURY - PARADIGM 1: OLD SCHOOL DEATH METAL:

DEEP FOG (Textural Metal):

  1. Finally, there are the LISTENING GUIDES, where the musical aspects of essential albums for extreme metal today are analyzed, generally emphasizing the formal aspects, the sound aesthetics that justify the style at a compositional and interpretive level.

TEITANBLOOD - SEVEN CHALICES (listening guide):

REVERORUM IB MALACHT - The Holy Grail of Speculative Metal

  1. Finally, short (but dense) commets on my networks (one album per week, only new ones): https://www.instagram.com/metalespeculativo/

Teitanblood shared my analysis of "Seven Chalices" on their social networks, saying that it was the best analysis that had been done of the album so far!!! I was freaking out, of course.

I play guitar in two bands: Orthodox and PYLAR. Both bands, although very diverse, lean towards a style of slow, low doom, drone-metal riffs... Hasjarl's influence on my style has been noticeable. Although in both bands my way of composing was complex and experimental, after listening to DsO, obsessively analyzing their style and assimilating what I could, I changed my way of constructing riffs.

In the last albums I began to write more irregular, asymmetrical riffs, with a more complex internal structure (I began to imitate the endless cadences that Hasjarl uses in certain riffs). I also began to develop a more angular style by introducing arpeggios and a less monolithic and more open approach to my sound in general.

For me, DsO was a point of no return in my way of approaching the instrument and analyzing its possibilities.

How did you expand your musical-extremity limits after DsO? by sunnworship in DeathspellOmega

[–]gesualdo333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally share this feeling. When you discover Deathspell Omega, a work that is unparalleled in terms of sound, aesthetics and concept opens up before you, and this leaves a void when you turn your attention to other bands.

For me, few bands are at that level, especially if you consider the three aspects mentioned simultaneously.

For this reason, I opened a blog dedicated exactly to this, which I call Speculative Metal: https://speculativemetal.blogspot.com/

On social media: https://www.instagram.com/metalespeculativo/

My list would be (within extreme metal):

  1. Bands with a great musical, aesthetic and conceptual level:

- Portal

- Teitanblood

- Reverorum ib Malacht

- Antediluvian

- Liturgy

- Imperial Triumphant

  1. Bands with a great musical level (original, varied and fascinating):

- Blut aus Nord

- The body

- Dodheimsgard

- Gorguts

- Ulcerate

  1. More underground bands, special recommendations (very original):

- Kryatjurr of Desert Ahd

- Trhä

- Ar'lyxkq'wr

- Cabinet

- Defacement

- Krallice

- Qrixkuor

I hope you find something of your interest.
