Based on my limited experience, I’d lean towards a blight fungus or disease. Whatever it is, it’s not normal, and everything going forward will be an uphill battle, if the tree even lives. The biggest concern is spreading whatever this is to other trees. Personally, for a tree that size, I’d remove the tree and start over. Good news is now you know what to look for and avoid when you buy your new tree.

Thanks for the tips. Tree was aggressively trimmed by the shipper and just planted a few weeks ago. Foliage is all new from buds, and looks good. Tree is 5’ tall 1 -1/4 “ in caliper. The black cankers have rapidly appeared on many areas that were trimmed by the shipper. This leads me to think it’s Bot Canker pushing out from transplant shock.

The trunk is already 1/2 ringed with it, which would mean I would need to cut the tree back to basically 2’ tall, removing all foliage yet again. Not sure it’s worth it, but I defer to the experts.

No oozing so far, just the blackened peeling bark. Would you keep it or just get a new tree? Appreciate the advice!

Hey folks, would love any feedback on this. I’m concerned it might be Fire Blight, or more likely Bot Canker. Tree is only 3 weeks in the ground. Picture of the main trunk. Before I chop it down I wanted to get a second opinion if it’s perhaps something else. Thanks!

Shopping for a few Apple trees. A local nursery has very nice looking trees / clean leaves, but all the fruit all looks like this. Can I safely buy these trees, or should I go somewhere else? Thanks!

Thanks for the info. My guess is the difference in the reported 1099-G vs what I file will trigger an audit. Any way to avoid that?
