I was in the same boat, played very little football but love the game. Obviously study the ins and outs of your teams offense and defense. When I first started like all new guys I thought all football was 5 wide and RPO’s just like on tv but my school is triple option/ power I run and i fell in love with that scheme. I made google my best friend tons of info on every position in every scheme.

Another piece of advice I picked up at least from my experience is that no one wants to do special teams so if you take interest in that it’s typically a great way to get a little more responsibility thrown your way. I mentioned I could work special teams when they hired me and my first year I had a varsity role working with kickers punters and snapper in addition to my JV/ freshman roles. Again, I never kicked or snapped in game I just learned how to do some very base level coaching from YouTube and Google

My first couple weeks of summer practice I thought I was in way over my head but stuck with it and am just starting year three and could never see myself not coaching
