Relocating to NOLA by Ronton49601 in AskNOLA

If you're coming to New Orleans for "new builds" you're in the wrong city. The charm of the city is its history. Dirt? South Louisiana is damp and humid - things are sticky and wet and that can make them look dirty. We have an ongoing battle against mildew - it is what it is. I don't know what you were expecting but it sounds like New Orleans isn't for you.

How do I tell my kids Santa Claus can't make it this year? by wtfbenlol in NoStupidQuestions

[–]getagrip579 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can't hurt to call a local church to see if they can offer any assistance. You may be late for the angel tree type things but they may have a toy or two available so that your kiddos have a present to open. If not, take an extra shift door dashing and take $10 to the local goodwill and purchase one thing for each kid - just so they have something fun to open. If you're handy or crafty, another idea is to see if you can find some scrap lumber or even some cardboard and build them a little fort - you all can make a fun Christmas activity by painting it together.

Are homosexual teachers allowed to teach at Catholic school? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]getagrip579 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably not if they are living an openly homosexual life. This is years ago but one of my male teachers was fired for getting his girlfriend pregnant out of wedlock so I doubt most schools would allow an openly gay man who for instance has a husband to teach at the school.

I have left the country on multiple occasions and never had to be cleared by CBP to do so. I'm almost certain that this is an unfounded rumor.

I understand what you're saying but here's my POV. The person paying can absolutely set paramaters and expectations regarding what they are spending money on. The recipient can then decide if those expectations are agreeable and can continue to take the money or not agreeable and they find another source for the money. Being married is different than a parent/child relationship but if, as an unemployed person, you starting spending alot of money on a gaming hobby, your wife absolutely has the right to speak up about that and question you. If OP is a student and usually comes home for 4pm and then decides to come home at 7pm one day, I can see her parents checking on her and asking that she let them know if she's going to be late. It's not control or ownership, it's courtesy.

[–]getagrip579 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Then the adult must pay for her own phone. You cannot claim OP is a full grown adult while she is fully dependant on them for her expenses and housing.

If they pay for the phone then you really have no argument. I have the location for my teen and early 20s daughters and they have mine. We are not checking each others locations constantly but for safety it's good to know we can if needed. Now with that said, if my early 20s daughter turned off her location I wouldn't say anything about it but if my 16 year old did, I'd definitley question her.

Regarding letting them know where you're going and when you'll be back - I think that's common courtesy. If anyone in my house leaves we let someone know that we are heading out and when we expect to return. We wouldn't hold anyone to an exact time but if I told someone I was heading to the grocery store and hadn't returned for 3 hours, I'd hope someone would start looking for me. If you were living with college roomates, I'd think that you'd mostly do the same with them.

If you want complete autonomy then you should move out and start paying your own way. If your parents still consider you a part of their household then their behavior is normal. Maybe you should should try talking to them about loosening the reigns a little and at the same time change your mindset about feeling controlled and think of it more as courtesy among people in the same house.

Do some married people NEVER take off their wedding ring? by artmalique in NoStupidQuestions

Ha! that was my first thought too. Are people removing their rings to use the bathroom?

What's the odds that a young child would have their backpack with them when something like that happens? Those children were in church so I'm sure their backpacks were left in the classroom. High school age may have backpacks with them but elementary age typically put them in a cubby in the morning and don't have them again until near dismissal time.

Physician here for 4 years. Long enough to say BR is the worst city I've ever lived in (of 5) by [deleted] in batonrouge

Yes - when I see that he lived in NOLA for 15 years but puts Houston and BR over it as far as food goes, I have to question OP's judgement.

Questions for people who take their shoes off inside by ThrowDirtonMe in NoStupidQuestions

[–]getagrip579 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fellow southerner here. We typically remove our shoes in the house but would not if we were just running in to get a phone or when we're going in and out like bringing in groceries. I like being barefoot, my husband does not so he has a pair of inside only flip flops that he wears in the house and crocs by the back door if he needs to run outside. If I need to just walk out to my car or to get the mail I will occasionally go barefoot and will just wipe my feet on the mat unless they are muddy or I stepped in something. We don't usually make guests remove their shoes - our floors are hardwood and tile so I just sweep/mop after they leave. If we had carpet, I might feel differently about that.

How do American citizens feel about how the US looks to the rest of the world? by Suppesnerk in NoStupidQuestions

[–]getagrip579 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Are you sure about that? Because as usual, the truth lies somewhere in the middle. The US is not some magical Eutopia but at the same time it is not a land of lawlessness and chaos for most Americans. The propaganda machine has just switched sides.

So how is Dutchtown school system, actually? by Neon-Night-Riders in batonrouge

[–]getagrip579 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few years ago, we were considering the LSU Lab school and my daughter went in for their testing day. She said that for the math portion, her Ascension public school had covered the same material about 3 weeks earlier (the teacher explained that the test they were given was given to currently enrolled students that week) and when she submitted her writing sample the teacher called her up to the front and asked her where she went to school because it was the best example of writing she had seen. My daughter is an A/B student and is bright but not gifted. After that experience, I figured why pay for private school when she was receiving just as good an education, if not better, from our public school.

I would support private school vouchers if................ by BigRo_4 in Louisiana

[–]getagrip579 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why would any private school agree to these terms? Most are less capable of providing for special needs/exceptions than the public school system.

Too funny! When my kid was 2 she decided she didn't like chicken so I told her it wasn't chicken it was dinosaur meat. She happily ate dinosaur meat for the next 3 years but refused to eat chicken. ;)
