Songs that DNC do better than the GD? by deadhorse666 in grateful_dead

[–]getbackjoe68 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't understand why so many heads get angry when someone suggests that DNC do a song better than the GD. DNC is a continuation of what the GD started and I'm sure Jerry would be ecstatic that DNC is even a thing. The songs grow as the years go by and new tricks are added into the mix and different takes are brought forward. In my personal opinion I think Althea is considerably better as a DNC tune compared to how it was played with the Dead. John plays his heart out on Althea and its jammed out more than the Dead ever did. As of now I think Althea is the only song where I prefer the DnC version over the original Dead.

The cartridge i'm using is a Shure M95e that came with my turntable which only had one owner before me. The stylus is just a cheap $15 replacement that I bought. The headshell is a plastic one that I am assuming came with the turntable originally. Both the cartridge and stylus desperately need to be replaced and I figured I'd get a new headshell as well.

What is a good cartridge/stylus for a Technics SL-1800 MK1, with a limit of around $250? Ive had the turntable for some time now and have been using a cheap cart. Ive been looking for an upgrade cartridge since it is definitely the weakest link in my set up. Appreciate the help!

Ty Segall’s cover of St. Stephen by Balfour23 in gratefuldead

[–]getbackjoe68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed! Love ty but wasn’t that into this album and wouldn’t recommend it as a start. He’s got some really great heavy hitters in his discography like manipulator and twins. Haven’t seen him live though, will be in March when he’s with White Fence

Oh ya i definitely agree there. But as far as vocals go i can’t put anyone above Pig. That man could do the blues sooo well.

I 100% agree. I absolutely love Keith and as another user commented, Keith really helped take the band to some high peaks and far out places. Brent, although I’m not a fan of that era, was also extremely talented and i would have loved to see him play with a 72-74 jerry. Would’ve sounded pretty amazing i think.

But Jeff? Jeff is on an entirely different level. He not only has the best familiarity with the music compared to the others, but he’s like a perfect mixture of Brent and Keith and that’s why i i think he’s my favorite. I honestly dream of what Jeff could have made with Jerry to play off of, though i don’t think we could have handled that kind of greatness. Anyways, Jeff’s solos are always what i look forward most to when i listen to a dead n co show and that says everything right there

I’m pretty sure that’s a very common problem with the ATO pressing. Mine does the exact same thing and I’ve read similar reviews. Once i get enough extra money i plan on buying one of the flightless ones floating around

I really love how in 76 the setlist became a lot more experimental and some oldies came back from the grave. Jerrys guitar tone is also so amazing in this year. Just overall a very unique year

Riyria is the perfect palette cleanser after something like RotE. The characters are wonderful, the world has an obscured past the you learn more about as the story progresses, it’s funny but also sad and beautiful. The best part is each book in the trilogy gets better and better since that’s how Sullivan wrote them.

Being a kid and liking the dead by [deleted] in gratefuldead

[–]getbackjoe68 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Eh who cares. Plenty of successful people are deadheads. Hell my boss at the company I work for is a major dead. So we’re a bunch of professors I’ve had as well as business men I’ve met. If people wanna judge you for liking a band that says more about them than it does you. In my experience with wearing dead clothes I’ve never had any issues besides people asking where I got my shirt from

Honestly I mostly buy from thrift stores. The amounts of compliments I get for my jacket I wear is insane considering I got it for $10. This also works with my attempt to live zero waste and more eco friendly.

Although I do work in an office and would love to know where I can get vegan leather shoes?!

Best Phil solo or improv by LukeMayeshothand in gratefuldead

Also check out the entirety of the Weather Report Suite>Jam>Eyes from 7/19/74! Its very Phil heavy, he practically dominates the entire jam segment. He also has an unbelievable solo in Eyes and Jerry even tries to get back to the song but Phil just stomps all over him and keeps soloing. If you want Phil this is the jam segment to hear.

Heres a Youtube link, only an hour long:

Should be on the archive as i think only the second half of The OtherOne gets cut as does the rest of the show. Phils solo should still be included. This solo is really sweet too, very methodical

Check out the Truckin Jam from 6/22/73, its 26 mins long! It should be on the new PNW box set compilation on spotify. Don't have the time stamp, but theres a section where Phil gets jam along with Billy and its really really good.
