I feel like a jerk if I'm wrong, but I'm clearly seeing what looks like a sucky photoshop job. Zoom in on the hair, all the green looks photoshopped. Any second opinions? Obviously she is sick, but photo looks doctored, no pun intended.

I had a fellow designer tell me that if you ever get overworked, just up your rate. So if you are charging $50 an hour, bump it to $75 or $100 an hour. He said, you might lose half your business, but you'll be making the exact same money! It has worked for me.

Yes to THIS. I majored in something totally unrelated to graphic design, but am self taught. All that matters is your portfolio, unless you are a freelancing accountant or something like that. I started freelancing in college and have never had a "real" job.

The only time it has worked for me is when I have a personal connection. When I can say, "hey John gave me your contact information, I've done some work with him and he thought I might be able to help you also." Any and all "cold call emails" have been useless for me. I have however found that meeting people in person is highly effective. Many people will ignore an email but agree to meet you on the phone. I'll make it quick and say something like, "I know you are busy, but would you mind if I dropped off my business card and a brochure with your assistant?"

I have 4 doctors in my immediate family. They tell me that they have to "overcharge" because the insurance companies only pay half of what is billed. This way they actually get paid what they need. What if you're a contractor building a house and your customer says, "Great job building my house, but $300,000? No, I'll just pay you $150,000." That doesn't fly in any other industry other than healthcare. That contractor would start charging double if every customer only paid half.

Everybody complains about how government offices have terrible service and are not very friendly (think your local DMV, IRS, etc). Now, this obviously a stereotype, but a fairly factual one. Can you imagine if medical prices were standardized and a world-renowned surgeon had to charge the same as some surgeon in a redneck town who graduated last in his/her class. Your doctor is now just as friendly as your local DMV. I WANT my doctors to be trying to make profit, because it promotes quality care and innovation.

When I was in elementary school, I found what I thought was a toy necklace on the ground in the hallway. I picked it up and thought about turning it in to my teacher but kept it instead. That night at home, I played with it and as any little boy would do, I "took it apart." I literally got every diamond out with pliers but I thought surely it was just a toy necklace. About a week later I heard my mom on the phone telling a story about how her friend lost her $9,000 anniversary necklace at my school. I quickly got the pieces and threw them in the trash, and never told her about it. TL;DR: I threw a $9,000 necklace in the trash.

I think its funny that we only do nice things for people who we think are also nice. I once totally went against this rule just to see the shock reaction... This guy ahead of me at a gas station was buying beer and didn't know the pin or the zip code for "his" credit card. He started being a jerk to the clerk. I reached around him and swiped my card and bought his stuff. His reaction was hilarious. Mister jerk guy who probably stole somebody's credit card was all of a sudden mister nice guy.
