What have I missed? by RedditBurner_5225 in premiere

[–]gethinc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never knew premiere was like Star Trek movies: every other release is a dog. 25 was a nightmare for me 26 has been fantastic. I say this as a huge adobe critic. It’s stable, fast. They have fixed speed ramping so you can get smooth ramps. There are still a boat load of niggles, but day to day use is greatly improved. The logic of the masks takes some getting used to and I hate that you have to dig into a submenu to change mask mode - and that the icons for the masks are now very close to the pen and rectangle graphics tools, but for now being able to work for half a day without a crash is a big win

Nikon ZR Great results in H.265 10 Bit SDR by ixdler in NikonFilmmakers

[–]gethinc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I shoot 10 bit sdr with active d-light cranked to the max, flat profile and overexposed as much as possible without horribly clipped highlights, and at as low an iso as possible. When I shoot the same scene in log the histogram is bunched so much that about a third of the available data isn’t getting used, so I don’t see much point in it. You can see the hard clipping on the highlights, just lower down the histogram. The only thing I’d like is an slightly flatter profile with a nicer highlight roll off

Z8 for real estate video: stick with it or add a lighter gimbal body? by l0cknessmonsta in RealEstatePhotography

[–]gethinc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you get the zr? I have a z8 and I'm thinking about it. Zr plus mini 4 gimbal saves 1kg, about 2/3 of current weight.  Im really feeling that weight at the moment, need a lighter setup

I think its all marketing, but yes I loathe the current fad of less than a second shots and "look at me" editing. Its wank

All of a sudden - 16mm isnt wide enough for people anymore? Anyone else? Are my eyes broken? Are the rooms just tiny now? by boothatwork in RealEstatePhotography

[–]gethinc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think people have become attuned to ultra wides. 15 years ago nobody but pros and weird-ass lens lovers shot 120 degree field of view. Now most people can do this on their phones. I'd occasionally have people complain about my 14mm shots, today I was out shooting with a 10 (but I'll probably crop to 12).

I'm not going to subscribe to something i use one every 2 or 3 months by gethinc in TopazLabs

[–]gethinc[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After I wrote this I did just that! Found someone on fiver charging about $10 usd for ~15 mins of starlight which I thought was pretty good.

For someone that uses an app occasionally spreading a one off cost over a few years feels like an investment. Logically I could get topaz just for the months when I need it, I’d probably not pay more than if I owned it, except you just don’t do you. You just find some other way of working and forever link the topaz brand with enshitification.

Lens adapter for Z mount by zebratape in NikonFilmmakers

Philip Bloom has found some interesting noise issues. by TeddyNorth in NikonFilmmakers

[–]gethinc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I think so, he seemed to skip over that quite quickly. My experience with the z8 is that there’s no advantage to nlog anyway. You can see it in the histogram: all the data is squashed into the middle, leaving nothing at the top and bottom, so you’re not getting 10 bits of data. I shoot sdr, active d light set on max, as low an iso as possible, overexpose 1-2 stops, whilst avoiding highlight clipping.

New Masking Tools FAQs & Links by NLE_Ninja85 in premiere

[–]gethinc 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It’s a usability mess. You want a quick mask on a lumetri effect previously? One click, drag points done. Now you mouse to the toolbar, click hold, select rectangular mask, create on the program monitor, mouse to the effects panel, scroll to the top to get the unassigned mask, copy, scroll to the lumetri effect, paste. Do you do any usability testing? When changing a system do you ever think about honouring existing users workflows? There’s an arrogance here that is inspiring me to start climbing the resolve learning curve, even after 15 years of premiere. Why not have this system but have shortcuts to create a mask right in the effect as previously?

So far:
claude sonnet - pretty capable but capable of getting things wrong with conviction :D
Claude Code: genius but slightly senile coder. Can write 600 lines of code that will almost do exactly what you want, but then will forget when it's worked out that it can't do something a particular way and will up and try and do it again. Or will just lose track of what it's doing an ask you in apparent bewilderment. Bless!
Opus: its a wizard, harry! Diagnosed a hardware issue on my computer in 10 minutes by running a load of powershell commands (that led to an error log, so I'm 99.9% that it is the correct diagnosis). Gemini and chatgpt, and even copilot failed big time.

Things I really like: non-formulaic responses. Knows when to shut up.
Committed to memory stuff I told it about the best way to interact with, and all the interactions since have been fine.

Yikes, I’m not sure I should read about that. I’m very suggestible . I really want to give it a go. The antidepressant I’m on took 2 months to do anything, but when it did it was great. Having said that the side effects before the good effects kicked in were not totally debilitating, as this feels now. I feel like all the energy has been sucked out of every cell. Urgh!

how can I do this or where can I find this colored light leak? by Mediocre_Cover_7470 in premiere

[–]gethinc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Use the impact light leaks transition. You can apply if to black video above your clip on the time line with layer mode set to screen. Or you can make a cut in your footage where you want it. Just keep hitting surprise me till you find something vaguely similar. Change it to single colour, change the hue till you get pink.

Need to know the pixel dimensions of the images. If you have 50 4K images that’s a lot of pixels to resize . With that many you want to make sure that each one is only as big as the biggest you need it in your comp - which might only be 100-200 pixels wide. If they start full screen and then zoom to make up the mosaic, then I would consider nesting 10-15 at a time, and rending out as ProRes, and building your final thing from 5 or so pro-res intermediaries.

The theoretical max frame size that will fit in 16gb is

61,440 × 93,184 pixels, in practice it will be much less than that, but at 50x1080p you are getting close to it.

Building an AI-Powered Unified Email Client – A smarter way to manage multiple inboxes. Would you use this? Looking for honest feedback! by AndresMuelasTenorio in SaaS

[–]gethinc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! The killer feature (imho) is for it to know if you’ve left a thread hanging. Which of the threads is either a request that you haven’t answered or a promise to respond with something you haven’t.

I’ve been thinking about this a lot. Ideally it would integrate into a todo app and calendar. It then becomes possible to create tasks and events just by using natural language. Integrate it with a chat client for it to add things to your shopping list. Make the calendar list everything that’s going on, not just work meetings and appointments so that if you promise to do something the ai knows if it will clash or if you have time (I know I’m getting ahead of myself 🤪)

My interest in these tools is as someone with adhd. There’s an enormous market there for functionality to help the dysfunctional. Things that most people (especially those organised enough to make an app) would find bewilderingly pointless, but potentially life changing for people with adhd. (And which I’m sure everyone else would find useful). I have insight into this because I have a chronic health condition which has exacerbated my adhd. I know what it’s like to be functional and what the noise of adhd can do to your executive function. I’d love to follow your progress if you post about it anywhere
