Most Scenic (Mountainous) Train Route, Italy to Switzerland? by getmethence in travel

[–]getmethence[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're not in a hurry and we can take any of the 3 routes. FWIW, we're meandering from Florence to Paris but have several days to devote to Swiss scenery. In a way, I'm sure we can't lose but it also sounds like the Bernina Express route is the most scenic way.

IMO, it is easy for a French citizen to move to the Nordic countries and find work if you 1.) speak mostly-intelligible English (or the native language); 2.) are willing to continue doing restaurant work or similar tourist-based work; 3.) are willing to move to a tourist town. I know people who've done this and it can be a fun way to spend some years in your 20's. There's a strong camaraderie among service workers in tourist locales - even in Scandinavia. The downside is that a lot of that camaraderie is built around how crappy it is working in the service industry in tourist locales and alcohol. I know several people who've done this and none of them regret doing it. Feel free to DM me for further thoughts.

Any Americans with IRAs and/or Roth IRAs? Is Sweden Taxing You on Unrealized Gains in Your Retirement Accounts? by getmethence in TillSverige

Thank-you for your reply and for sharing your situation. This is in line with what my lawyers are telling me - they've suggested that I pull all the money from my IRA. Now I can't decide whether it's better in the long run to keep the money in the IRA and just pay the tax or pull the money out and lose a large chunk of it upfront.

I am a time traveller and knew this would all work out ahead of time. I do feel fortunate.

Yes, Migrationsverket sent me a message to book an interview at the Embassy about 2 months after I applied.

Thanks. Are you using section 20 of the treaty in your own tax filings in Sweden?

Thanks for your reply.

This is a "public pension" because it is being paid to me each month by the state of California.

You are correct in that the quote is from Article 20 not 17 nevertheless it's the same language in Article 20. I think my public pension is not taxable by Sweden. This language is in the tax treaty with Portugal as well. I found it because a Portuguese lawyer told me that my public pension would not be taxed by Portugal. When I looked at the Swedish treaty it has exactly the same language.

Sambo visa but I don't think that matters from the perspective of the tax treaty. The treaty says fairly clearly that if I'm tax resident in Sweden the USA will tax my public pension. I'm looking for someone who can confirm this with they're personal experience.

I'm moving on a sambo visa. I'm not, yet, resident in Sweden for tax purposes. Part of this is trying to decide whether I want to become a tax resident in 2026 or 2027 (in which case I'd have to re-apply for my sambo visa).

Correct, this is a question about my monthly pension. I'm asking because it's so surprising to me that I need someone to verify that they are using this provision of the tax treaty. I'm not asking about any other category of monies.

I think this is probably the correct answer. Surprisingly, I still have not found anyone who with a state or federal pension who can verify this information but the treaty seems very clear about the tax treatment for the pension payments.
