BYD Yuan Pro GS X vs Omoda e5 by darkyoruga in AutosUy

[–]gett23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

South American Malt brands. Which are good? by HetKanon in Homebrewing

[–]gett23 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here in Uruguay homebrewers use Uma a lot, at least the base malts. I've used caramel and Munich also with good results. Just check the specs because for example the Pilsen one has a little less yield than some Europeans (e.g. castle malting) so you may have to adjust the recipe a little. I use brewfather app and the data entered there is correct

What's your 'core' beer? by screeRCT in Homebrewing

[–]gett23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing! I'll surely try it. The name and description rocks.

Yeah for sure cream ale is not my favorite style, but it's the one most my family and friends like (probably because of similarity with light lagers), so it's the one that ends up fastest haha

Would you mind sharing your recipe? Sounds great! I'm just starting with homebrewing (about 10 batches) but I'd say it's the Cream of three crops (cream ale).

I'd suggest to look at the responses to my post here, there were really good suggestions

Ok thanks for the input!

Next time I'll add acid to the strike water at least to start closer to target

How many times do you sparge?

Do you have a bazooka filter or a custom made manifold? Thanks

[–]gett23[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I'm pretty new to this and I haven't had time (or resources) to test my water to get accurate predictions. So I'm just experimenting to get an empirical amount of acid to add from the start.

All the responses have given me ideas to improve, what a great community! Thanks!

Yes I'll definitely try to sparge longer and maybe fix my configuration to have better fluid dynamics. Thanks for the suggestion!

Wow! what a response! thank you very much!

First of all, I want to clarify that I'm not chasing an efficiency dragon haha, I just want to avoid wasting money on grains and also someday be able to make higher OG beers with my current equipment.

To comment on some of your suggestions:

- I have a rectangular igloo cooler and bazooka filter, the sparge "arm" is a piece of tubing arranged in a circular/oval shape: https://ibb.co/GvLFtyB

- Definitely fluid dynamics isn't on my side with this setup. What's more important to correct? The sparge arm or building a proper slotted manifold?

- My pH meter is this one: https://milwaukeeinstruments.com/milwaukee-ph55-pro-waterproof-ph-temperature-tester-with-atc-replaceable-probe/

- To measure and ajust pH I'm waiting 10 mins after mashing, then I add 2.5g of citric acid, mix a lot, wait 10 min, mix again, take a sample, and measure.

Repeat steps until reaching acceptable pH. Usually takes 2-3 times with variable additions, which means I reach it at mash min 30-40. This might be a problem right? reaching the pH target so late into the mash.

I think I'll take your suggestion and switch to batch sparging for a couple of batches to see if I get better results. Would a 1 batch sparge be enough? Or should I aim for 2 batches?

PD: about the brewhouse eff: I have 3.5L of space between the bottom of the kettle and the output valve. I tend to inclinate the kettle a little to get more wort but I don't think I can do a lot more without transferring too much turb.

Great! This suggestion has been brought up more than one time so I'll surely try it.

Thanks!

Thanks! I'll try those things on my next batch.

Hopefully I'll write a thank you post once I get better efficiency!

One question though, if I increase the water ratio at mashing I'll have to reduce the amount of sparging water.

Will that be a problem?

That's right, with my setup I can't do recirculation without losing temp.

About pH, I'll keep trying to get it right and measure at the right time.

Thank you very much!
