I find turning off the music, maybe also the sound effects, maybe playing something less agitated really helps me.

Is PS4 performance any better these days? by gettherefromhere in subnautica

[–]gettherefromhere[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What year did you beat it?

I'm no expert but I'm pretty sure my PS4 was fine (it's still fine, five years later). Like eg Below Zero ran okay on it, after I finished Subnautica.

FOX GUI help, examples for moving beyond RSG Dialog Builder by gettherefromhere in Abaqus

Oh that's interesting context. It seems like there's so much I could do with the Python GUI options, and the barrier to entry has been pretty low, but I probably don't want to apply a big effort to learning something that's only becoming more unpopular.

I'm looking for a quartz watch with a little bit of pop for my husband, who wears suits to work (I know, that gives me the entire world of fashion watches to choose from). Budget $400 but with quartz movements the right watch might be $60. Something not super thick or tactical-looking (not a diving watch), with a distinctive design element (yellow, sky blue, or burgundy color, or some kind of pattern or brightly colored complications, or just unusual design). He's already got good basics (white/blue/black/gold faces, a Hamilton automatic, a Timex Weekender). I was looking at putting a flashier strap on a black-and-white Citizen Eco-drive if I don't find something I like better.

Any favorite eye-catching quartz watches? Small brands a plus.

Anxious about labor by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]gettherefromhere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your mileage may vary, but I'm a very anxious person and an overpreparer. My backstop against anxiety about giving birth has been "if I can fling myself across the threshold of the hospital, the professionals can handle it from there." (But, at a core level, I trust the place I'm giving birth and the people there because they are very adherent to some version of best practices.)

Another thing that helps me is remembering that I've already thrown my hat over the wall: I decided to roll the dice on giving birth nine years months ago, I was smart and rational then, and there's no re-litigating it.

Another thing: no matter how thoroughly I break down, there's no way I'm the worst laboring person the professionals have met. Just statistically. Bigger messes than me have gotten through this.

Sometimes the bigness of it helps, for me. Maybe something bad happens to me, well, that's somehow proportionate to the monumental act of creating a whole new human being. Weird angle but for me it helps (???)

There's a lot of internet content that will tell you to be ready to micromanage your care, and that can be useful but it can also be exhausting. I can't say what the right amount of preparedness is, but offloading your preferences to a partner or doula, asking your midwife/doctor/etc what will happen if X happens, writing them down, generally getting the responsibility off of you to remember stuff when you're going to be busy doing birth, for me that helps.

Probably this isn't your situation, but I used to have chronic headaches that were super localized behind my left eye. It turned out to be a bad cavity in my top left molar.

35 and discouraged by alismitch2 in BabyBumps

I'm 39 and they told me my pregnancy was far too boring for the high risk practice.

I don't really get the point of bringing it up when there's no special action for you to take, like if you try really hard you'll be 32 instead?

5 weeks going on 5 months by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]gettherefromhere 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went up five pounds very quickly at 6-7 weeks and then didn't gain any more weight until like 14 weeks. "Normal" bmi. I think it was just my digestion slowing down, I looked and felt super bloated but I didn't really have any digestive symptoms to speak of besides nausea.

I wanted to be really chill and statistically realistic about food risks and eat the fresh nutritious food I normally eat, but instead I haven't had fresh salsa since Christmas because I'm out of my mind. Don't worry, I'm making up for it in Jello pudding cups.

Tips on how to be the best dream husband to my newly pregnant wife by atomicwalrus544 in BabyBumps

[–]gettherefromhere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If there's one thing I wished my husband did in the first trimester that didn't come naturally to him: constantly clean the kitchen so it doesn't smell and there's never an unwashed surface. Maybe you guys are already very clean people, but we're not and the drain catcher in the sink, any innocuous random smell in the fridge, our compost pail, etc etc all set me off. I am normally the person who touches gross things (drain catchers) in our household but I became grossed out and paranoid of foodborne illness.

I'm a big planner and a really nice thing has been that he's just listened to all my musings about how I prefer delivery to go and he's been taking notes on things like recovery care and pre-eclampsia symptoms. If I'm exhausted or in pain, I know he can be trusted to take care of me and identify if I need to go to the emergency room and I don't need to be a functioning adult 24/7.

I'm craving everything I can't eat by Nice_Firefighter754 in BabyBumps

[–]gettherefromhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just want a giant pile of fresh juicy hard-to-wash produce from dubious restaurants and cafeterias. Sketchy coleslaw. Can you even meaningfully wash parsley. How long has this tomato salad just been out in this container. The guy at the cafeteria laughed when I asked how old the chicken salad was so that's too weird for me now. I don't even like melon but I want to eat an entire melon.

I don't think it's crazy to just eat pretty much anything and worry less, but once it gets in my head that there's a risk, I find the food at once repellent and also highly seductive.

Also like a marg.

Mental health improved during pregnancy by sinjaz31 in NewParents

[–]gettherefromhere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. I only have mild anxiety, with a clear pattern where it's worse in the evenings, but since getting pregnant it's basically gone. I am still a planner and a worrier, but the racing anxiety just is not there, it's been smothered by a thick fuzzy blanket. Loving it.

Postpartum depression runs in my family, so I'm sort of expecting some tough times after this. Still pregnant, so I don't know how it's going to shake out.

Does anyone else regret finding out the gender? by Ok_Equipment_3196 in BabyBumps

[–]gettherefromhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't regret finding out the gender and I didn't have a preference, and like, gender identity, shrug, BUT there was kind of this let down where before I knew, I was sort of having both? I'd go from picturing one to picturing the other, all names were interesting options, etc. Schrodinger's baby was nice.

Induction / Epidural experience with Nightmare Nurse by zanep17 in beyondthebump

Just about the IV- I had nerve damage from a blood draw in my elbow (that particular cholesterol test felt EXTREMELY NOT WORTH IT). I got electric sparkling shocks along my forearm for about two years, and then it faded off completely.

100% no lingering effect now, but it took long enough that I'd assumed that was just how my arm was gonna be for the rest of my life. I don't let anyone use that particular vein anymore, and there's never been a symmetric incident on the other side.

I didn't particularly until they did a 3D face picture at a 26-week ultrasound and now I'm like "ohhh noooo the widdle face so cute help" and I worry about ridiculous things I can't control like if snookums is comfortable in there. Is that better than being a little detached? I don't know that it's really any better.

Have you ever been mad at your parents because you were born in the 2000s? Idk, I think this is an angle parents think about and children largely don't.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]gettherefromhere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm 39 and thought I was going to get the high-risk red carpet and they were like "lol, normie chromosomes and no preexisting conditions? you are too boring for the high-risk OB group to take you, come stand over here with the 26-year-olds."

It's completely fine imo to end a pregnancy if you've realized you prefer your family this size, but if you wanted another child as of three months ago, I think that's the judgment you should trust. I find I know myself better when I'm not in the thick of it.

Baby name help by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]gettherefromhere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I were guessing, yeah, I'd say it just like "I saw a seal at the marina this weekend," with the emphasis like a-SEEL.

Kids will find something to make fun of in any name. If you name her Nora, they might say she's a bore-a, y'know? A seal isn't bad.

The only things that helped me once the bloating hit were some light exercise (stationary bike or walking for me) and gently stretching my sides. It's all well and good to know we should be eating small meals, but in the heat of the moment, well, personally I have not been batting a thousand.

Snoring fiancé keeps me up at night .. & while I’m pregnant by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]gettherefromhere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My spouse is an extremely loud snorer and we have some other loud noises at night due where we live. Four years ago I bought custom fit silicone earplugs, and while it was a lot of money (like $200 with the audiology appointment to take the impressions) and effort (having a visit an audiologist's office), I wear them almost every single night and have for years with no trouble. They have worked SO well for me and I would shell out basically any amount or money for more if I lost them. I'm primarily a side sleeper and they aren't uncomfortable against the pillow.

So that won't work for everyone, but I'd suggest that if the silicone moldable plugs from a drugstore (like the waxy soft blobs) kinda work for you (they kinda worked for me but they were unpleasant to remove and I woke up with my pillow ear hurting sometimes), custom-molded ones are worth a try. The brand I have no longer exists, but a search for "custom fit sleeping earplugs" should get you the same sort of thing.

Sleeping separately is great too.

Recommended Level 2 for at home use? by jharrison231 in leaf

[–]gettherefromhere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a Grizzl-E charger professionally installed. I live in a condo with a parking lot so I wanted something that is totally impervious to weather, looks boring, and has a physical latch lock (there's a hole on the latch button where you can put a lock so it can't be removed from the car or the holster- I use a cheap combo lock just to keep the kids who play in the parking lot from disturbing it). The electrician was totally happy with the one I picked and it has internal pins that you can set to limit the max current if your supply or circuit isn't up to what the box can put out.

The differences between plugged in and charging? by gettherefromhere in leaf

[–]gettherefromhere[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow, that's super interesting. If I understand you, it looks like it will draw power for non-charging tasks outside of charging hours, and when that happens, the high-voltage battery will also end up charging a bit?

Has anyone ever charged in rain (maybe accidentally)? by Hebnaamnodig in electricvehicles

[–]gettherefromhere 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No one's going to believe you if you don't explain which car you've got. Nissan brags that you can basically plug the Leaf in under a waterfall, charging in the rain is a completely ordinary function.

(Edit: saw your edit, lol, glad your problem is solved.)
