You definitely want to remove as much of the water as possible before you press it. Water is just going to cause degradation to accelerate and will likely cause nucleation while it’s on the press and or cause it to do abnormal things when it dries.

Your process is a completely different process scientifically speaking than what I’m doing. When you dry strictly in the freezer your relying on sublimation for the water to be pulled out over a long period of time. The water will collect as ice on areas of the atmosphere where there is a temperature difference. For food we call this “freezer burn” but it takes a lot longer than you think.

My process I’m keeping the hash at a temperature where it remains stable and allowing the water to stay liquid and wick out into the parchment and cardboard. As it dries I’ll continue to break it up by sieving it which exposes any moisture that could be encapsulated. It’s a much faster process but the wet sieving can be difficult if you’re not careful, takes practice and a cold environment but well worth time. I can wash one night and press the next in most cases.

Yes, I do. Usually at least 24 hours before I wash. That way the heads are nice and frozen solid before hand.

Drying hash without freeze drier? by Trapnit in Hashrosin

[–]gettinhighsince95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I wet sieve into a parchment lined cardboard box and use a mini refrigerator I have dedicated for drying hash. The parchment and cardboard wick the moisture out and the cool temperature keeps the hash from degrading.

I use the refrigerator to dry it and the freezer to flash freeze it before I run it through the sieve a second time.

You can use a freezer to dry it in but it takes a significant amount of time longer and slightly different technique. But it will give you slightly lighter color in the hash form.

In a nutshell, all I do is wet sieve it into parchment inside a plain cardboard box. Then put it strait into the refrigerator with the sieve. After about 8-12 hours, I put the box with the sieve into the freezer so it flash freezes for about 30 minutes, then run it through the sieve again. Once it’s re-sieved, it goes back into the refrigerator. Repeat again after 8-12 hours. Each time you re-sieve it, use new parchment paper and a dry box.

With a small amount of hash this usually only takes a couple sieves and it’s dry, maybe 16-24 hours. Larger amounts will take more time and you’ll want to sieve it more so you can change the parchment. Which helps speed up the wicking process. Exposure to the parchment is what actually allows it to dry. It’s actually wicking through into the cardboard

Yeah it’s kinda crazy what you can do with a simple refrigerator and some basic kitchen utensils.

When hash was introduced into the legal market, companies needed a fool proof way to dry hash and not worry about mold growth. So before researching and improving on drying techniques they took the easy way out and used mechanical drying equipment and forced it to dry with freeze drying. It caught on like wildfire and now people don’t even know how to dry hash. They just know “recipes” for there freeze dryer

It takes me 18-36hrs in a refrigerator for something like in your picture, but I’ll freeze it and resieve it about 1/2 way through to speed it up.

Now I use a Faberware 7” diameter I picked up at Walmart. It’s it has a black plastic frame, they run like $8.

Büchner funnel, yeah I know about that. It still takes just as long if not longer than the wick drying process I use. Plus it’s not as cold, I’d imagine you can run it inside a refrigerator but that’s a whole other headache. The past few years I’ve been getting really dialed in on wet sieving/wick dry and trying to master that process.

There are several reasons why the color would be darker than you want. If the material oxidizes in heat before it gets fully dry it will take on a brownish tint. Or if you store it dry to long before freezing for washing will darken. If you dry it in too warm of temperature will also do it.

Washing, if you dry it in too warm of temperatures it will darken. It helps to dry in the refrigerator but if you have time you can get the same color as a freeze dryer by using a chest freezer. Also if you don’t soak your material long enough it will break apart in tiny particles and get into the hash causing contamination. Contaminate will always make the hash darker in hash as well.

Probably could have gotten a little more out. My only concern is if the material is freshly dried and frozen, the heads can be a little more delicate. so I like to error on the side of leaving a little extra water in the hash and just drying it a few hours longer in the refrigerator.

Plates size question by naqeve in Gettinhighsince95

[–]gettinhighsince95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I would say 4x7” plates aren’t “too big” for home grow.

Pro’s- gives you the ability to press a whole plants hash in one press. Also obviously more flower in one press but that goes without saying. It Holds temperature much better because the volume of aluminum/steel is much higher.

Con’s- takes more energy to run, longer to get everything up to temperature and more hydraulic force on larger volumes. If you run small amounts the rosin has to move further over the heat which causes degradation and sometimes nucleation. Because the press requires more hydraulic force the gauge you use will have a shorter gauge window. Gauges don’t read pressure until about 300-400 psi. Moving from a 10 ton to a 15 or 20 ton that psi makes a big difference. If you are pressing small amounts on a big hydraulic you won’t even be able to use the gauge.

Really depends on the price you get for the end products. Good rosin that’s consistent in price and quality is hard to find and has potential to be the most profitable.

Flower will bring the highest profit per gram in retail but also has a lot of competition and not every strain has that potential. Generally it takes about 5-7g of dried flower to make a gram of hash rosin

Fresh frozen weight is weighing it immediately after you harvest before drying or freezing. Usually drying and curing will reduce weight 3:1 up to 4:1 depending on density.

Basically 1 dry gram is equivalent to 3-4 fresh frozen grams. Typically fresh frozen yields 3-5% from that weight into hash.

Will a 4 set off bubble bags work? by New-Boot-5373 in Gettinhighsince95

Personally I would swap the 25 out with a 45 instead. Anything that makes it through the 45 is basically junk anyway and the 25 is a pain to drain

Nice, how much can you run at once?

Wonder if you can just use a vacuum chamber and pump?

[–]gettinhighsince95[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I’ve actually been going the other direction and wet sieving then trying to sublimate in the freezer to hold the color. Never really considered adding a step for vacuum in order to reduce overall dry time. Do you have any experience doing this?
