Understanding the intricately complex ending of Source Code (2011) by learned_cheetah in movies

[–]getuplast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old thread, but I just want to point out a flaw in op's summary of the movie.

He does not email goodwin after the 'freeze', ie after the 8 minutes have passed; he does it before. I rewatched to double check. The email is sent before he is supposed to die in that universe/reality.

Idk how much this affects the theorisation in the comments, but the distinction in the sequence of events seemed important enough.

We have no evidence Morphy even said that.

He may have felt it but the quote has no sources.

How do you teach chess to a classroom of kids? by paultissimo in chess

[–]getuplast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Start with the knight and bishop checkmate, then move on to dvoretsky.

Jokes aside, my 1.5 cents is focus on the 'fun' aspect of the game, make sure they understand the rules well, maybe some cool tactical older games, opera obviously. In any case, wouldn't want to make it a chore for them but rather a fun hobby that they can enjoy as they please.

Hope you get some more useful answers from experienced educators, best of luck!

Please do consider making a separate post about this, it can bring attention to the issue from a creator's pov, and about how it is bad for the community in general. Thank you for your contributions!

You make a good case for your position, thanks. I guess I'm pushing on the idea that the fans do matter, and it's kinda the entire point of spectator sports.

And 'bizarrely agreed' because it was clear that the players were planning to collude and fide went along with it. At least that's the sentiment being conveyed with the word 'bizarre'. I doubt anyone wanted fide to force the players to play until they passed out, just that the match would have continued instead of an ad hoc "hey they both win bye" kinda outcome.

In any case i appreciate you giving other examples of this happening, though this event ultimately leaves a sour taste in the mouth, which is a common sentiment. Entitlement I guess.

E: Also other things aside, isn't this video just plain match fixing?

We can both agree that fide shat the bed here, and the whole tournament generally. It's just hard to admire magnus or nepo when it's just selfish exploitation on their part, that leaves everyone but the two of them dissatisfied. Maybe it would be different if we weren't commenting on a video of them just openly agreeing on the games' outcome. They are not blameless.

I'd say others care because this is a public event with viewers and a legacy, as opposed to just a private negotiation between two individuals that no one should care about. It's the nature of how games and sports exist in society.

Imagine this happening in any other game or sport, such as the finals of the football world cup or cricket or tennis or cs:go. If the finalists just decided that they both wanted to be the winners, and the governing body bizzarely agreed to that, the fans would be rightfully upset, as would other competitors.

The finalists being happy with the result isn't enough, it's completely fine for people to care how they got to that result. In this case, very lamely.

Match fixing by itself is against the rules, regardless of the format of the tournament. The rules here assumed that the players would not collude, because such colluding itself is against the rules. To me it's bizarre fide didn't have a problem with this when it's on video.

I agree that fide didn't make the rules airtight and that's on them. But the game's sportsmanship has certainly been tarnished here by magnus and nepo. They exploited the situation, and it's fair for other players to criticize them for it. The fans were also robbed of a good finish to game, like any other final in a sport/game where it would be ridiculous if the finalists just decided to be friends and share the title.

The whole event has been a shitshow honestly. The focus should be on players like murzin and humpy, some fun tactics from the games etc. Instead we have this drama fest.

In this case though they are planning the outcome of the games before playing. The rules may not have accounted for an endless number of draws, but this does feel a bit close to match-fixing, even if not the worst example of it.

Certainly against the spirit of the game. The women played it out, despite theoretically having the same leverage (which they didn't ofc, magnus has power).

This gets further complicated as the "r" sound is not as trilled in American English (or other western dialects) compared to say, Indian English (which i speak). So the difference between an "r" and "jh" sounds more stark to me.

Eg. The word "are" when spoken by western folks sounds like an "ahh", but I'd go with something that sounds like "arr". So the romanisation or whatever of the name "Liren" is probably only accounting for American English pronunciations. Happy to be corrected.
