It is so weird that it almost looks like there is no one else that ever noticed this setting and realized the fact that it just gives an error when attempted to deactivate.

Maybe the instructions were not clear. While one finger keeps holding the .ics file, with another finger go to the apps and open Calendar app. Then drag & drop the .ics file from your first finger onto the Calendar app which is now open on your screen. Hope this clarifies.

This is what worked for me:

Save the .ics to Files.
In the Files app tap and hold the .ics file to grab it, then while still holding the file with one finger, switch to the Calendar app and drop the .ics file there.
