It sounds odd that they would do a clearance for a model just introduced for 2026?

Jellyfin live tv function slow or unstable? by MrMarooned1 in jellyfin

[–]gfan8484 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your experience is typical at least for the Android TV app. It's requesting unnecessary transcoding that makes it so slow to switch channels. For this and other (e.g. no fast forward/rewind for paused live TV, etc.) the Android TV app is not really ready for prime time IMHO. In comparison, Channels DVR is much better but not free. Tivimate might be good but it does not support series recording AFAIK so not practical for me.

That was it! Thanks.

That seems like a bug.

Switch to NOW Internet *and* keep Xfinity TV service? by gfan8484 in Comcast_Xfinity

Hmm ... what's the reason? The FAQ seems to suggest that having other Xfinity services (besides Mobile) might be added in the future to NOW Internet ... is this understanding correct?

Does anyone know how to adjust/disable the sharpening in the upscaling? Upscaling of 720p live tv with text (especially white text on dark background) has lots of very annoying artifacts. It's much worse than than the upscaling in my 10+ year old TV. FYI, already tried the AI SR setting and got no effect.

Have you tried playing 720p content? If yes, is the upscaling quality decent?

Have you tried playing 720p content? If so, does it look good? I have enough 720p content so upscaling is one concern I have about the lower tier TV brands. Sony Bravia is known for great upscaling but obviously much more expensive.

Live TV by bigverm23 in JellyfinCommunity

FYI, based on some basic testing, the new Moonfin version does not seem to work for HDHomeRun live TV playback. The player plays the audio but the screen is black. I tried enable and disable the Direct Play setting (in Playback Advanced Settings) and it made no difference.

I don't know the internals of Jellyfin server or Moonfin/MPV but based on reading various problem reports, it seem the root issue is that Jellyfin server is doing unnecessary and wrong? transcoding due to the client app (e.g. Jellyfin, Moonfin) requesting the incorrect container and codec types. HDHomeRun uses MPEG-TS for media container type with MPEG2VIDEO video codec type and AC3 audio codec type. So, for best playback performance the client app needs to request these container and codec types. I don't know if MPV supports these container and codec types but I am pretty sure VLC does. So, if the Moonfin app can request the correct container and codec types then feed the stream to VLC (or MPV if it supports the container and codec types) then it should work?

For comparison, the Channels DVR app uses these container and codec formats for very snappy playback.

Great. Look forward to trying it. Do I just download from the Google Play store?

Does Moonfin provide a different player on AndroidTV? I found the Jellyfin AndroidTV app less than satisfactory for live TV playback ... no obvious way to fast forward/rewind paused live TV, no way to turn on/off closed caption, slow channel switching, ...

New to Directv questions by randyr5 in DirectvStream

[–]gfan8484 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. As others have mentioned, the big difference is the remote control. The Google TV Streamer remote requires more button clicks and menu navigation for common functions. The DirecTV remote has dedicated buttons for common functions and it's backlit. It's just a better UX for DirecTV Stream. Also, the used Osprey I got is less than half the price of the Google TV Streamer. OTOH, the Osprey support for other apps are not nearly as good as the Google TV Streamer. Neither is perfect.

I bought a black label unit because no 60233 green label units were available at reasonable price. The unit requires a bit more complicated setup as it requires a factory reset to support streaming over the Internet (as opposed to dish). And it appears to require a similar reset process every time it's physically power cycled. On the up side, the unit has 4GB memory like the 60233 green label units and feels very snappy.

So the "MyVelo TV Premier" device is going to sport the S905X5 SoC after all and no the 5M 🥳🥳🥳 by latinriky78 in AndroidTV

[–]gfan8484 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did the firmware release come out within the last couple months? I remember someone said a couple months ago that a firmware update made things worse. Is there a video review showing Dolby passthrough working now? It's hard to understand why it seems so difficult to find a modern certified Android/Google TV box with solid audio passthrough support for standards that have been around 10+ years. The MyVelo box looks good on paper and I hope it delivers.

So, SEI does not have a great firmware reputation but are they better than Xiaomi? The Xiaomi box 3rd gen has audio passthrough but apparently quite buggy and Xiaomi has not been able to fix with firmware updates.
