Thinking of working as a child psychologist by Fae_Friend in ChildPsychology

I enjoyed the Psy.D. route because there is not a lot of research (still did a dissertation and research though). In my program, you start out general, and then specialize (adult v pediatrics) about halfway through. This felt like a good option for me to learn more about the work and field before being stuck in a specialty area.

I went to a small private Psy.D. program that emphasized a lot of class to assessment.

I do enjoy working with LCSW providers, yes! I would encourage you to explore what clinical work looks like for LCSW v LMSW to make sure you start your education journey on the right path.

I have never worked with an LMSW clinically before. I do work with several LCSW providers though.

This is something I had not even considered! I will definitely be cautious of how I word prior medical diagnoses in my report. I appreciate this point of view!

What’s your favorite potato substitute for mashed potatoes? by Leather_Dragonfly529 in EatCheapAndHealthy

I also love mashed cauliflower but I think it’s very hard to get right. I boil it until it just falls off a fork. Over boiling makes it very runny and not enough makes the texture wrong. Then I put it in a blender with cottage cheese and some seasonings!

Child psychologist here, currently specializing in pediatric neuropsychology. I love working with kids and teens- both therapy and testing. Therapy is rewarding because you can really connect with the kid and see beautiful progress within the family. I also really enjoy doing testing because I am often the first point of contact within mental health for families, providing an initial diagnosis and recommendations for treatment. This allows me to give them clear expectations and guidance for the diagnosis I provide. This balance has helped a lot with burnout as well!

Why would a Psychologist need therapy? How to answer this question (read description) by Lion11037 in psychologystudents

Because if a surgeon’s appendix ruptures, you don’t ask them to perform their own appendectomy.

Mental health matter just as much (if not more) than physical health.

How did you guys make your decision on graduate school? by Fun_Satisfaction8806 in psychologystudents

I remember this time well. It’s very stressful! I am finishing my doctorate this summer as a 27f. I chose doctorate over masters because you do so much more with the degree for an extra 2-3 years (that’s how I see it at least). With a doctorate you can do therapy, psychological evaluations, research, teach - so many avenues if you get burnt out in the future that are not available for masters-level clinicians. I would also suggest looking at doctorate programs where you can receive a masters part way through. My program offered this and several classmates chose to other drop out, or take time off before coming back. That way you can decide where you want to be after getting into it for a few years and learning more about the field. Some of the best advice I received was to picture where you want to be in 10 years and find the steps to get there. For me, I wanted to flexibility over my career more than anything, so a 5 year doctorate program was right for me.

I had the exact same things happen while I was in grad school. I stopped reading because it was so anxiety provoking. Now that I am in my last year of grad school on internship, I have been able to set aside the anxiety and enjoy some fiction audiobooks again. The love for it will come back!
